What is the difference between ‘content’ and ‘ingredient’? They are both items in a mixture.

Contents in a mixture can be separated into the parts. Crayons and markers in a box can be separated into crayons alone and markers alone.

Ingredients in a mixture cannot be separated. A cake has the ingredients of egg, flour, and water. When they are mixed, they make a new mixture. You cannot separate them.

Containers on wheelsWe can carry small and light contents in bags, boxes, and cartons in our arms. How do we carry big or heavy items?

We put the contents in or on containers with wheels. We pull or push containers with wheels. Wheels roll and make it easy to move heavy things. A wheelbarrow has one wheel. A hand truck or a trailer has two wheels. A cart has four wheels.

Some wheels are attached. They do not come off. Wheels on a wagon, dolly, or trailer are attached. On my kayak, the wheels are removable. I can put them on and take them off. I put the wheels on the kayak when I pull it to the water. I take the wheels off when the kayak is in the water. The removable wheels make moving the kayak easy.

Teacher Notes:Now is a good time to look back at previous lessons and review vocabulary.

Look at the picture from the first lesson of the bowl of seashells. See if the student can generalize the concept to say, “The content of the bowl is seashells.”

What are the contents of a museum? Use the word ‘content’ (as in happy) with words from the emotions list to see how it fits

in. Consider the degree of emotion with ‘content’. Is it a 1, 3, or maybe 7?

Discuss the difference between how to use a 2 wheel container (vocab. word – tilt) and a 4 wheel container.

Create a Smelling Station. Place small spice containers out to be smelled and evaluated. Consider – cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg cocoa, & others. Have the student guess the contents of the containers based on smell.

Make Kool Aid or Jell-O to show how ingredients are different from contents. The ingredients cannot be separated. Use trail mix or a bag of M&Ms as a comparison to show a mixture of contents.
