BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships& Athlete Development Camps

2015/16 Host Application

What are the BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Athlete Development Camps? The series of BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps were designed to support the effort to develop a consistent, coordinated Aboriginal Team BC program and better prepare athletes and coaches in a variety of sports for upcoming North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and other elite competitions.

The events provide a unique opportunity for Aboriginal athletes and coaches from First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Friendship Centres throughout the province to gather and develop skills or compete in events that promote sport excellence while celebrating cultural unity and pride. Held in a variety of communities across British Columbia, the events have been an ongoing series since 2011.

Call for Community Hosts The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council is seeking First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Friendship Centres or other not-for-profit Aboriginal organizations throughout the province who are interested in hosting either a BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships or a Provincial Athlete Development Camp for Aboriginal youth for the 2015/16 season.

Communities or organizations are invited to apply for the opportunity to host a Provincial event with the selected community host awarded a Hosting Grant to offset the event operating costs. To apply, please complete the attached form and submit by 4pm, Friday, May 1st, 2015 to:

Lara Mussell, Manager, Sport Development & CompetitionsPh: 250-388-5522 Fax: (toll-free) 1-877-711-5594 Email: [email protected]

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFO

Criteria for Selecting HostsThe Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council and its Provincial Sport Committees will select the Host Communities/Friendship Centres based on experience and preparedness criteria. Successful hosts will have an appointed individual to serve as event coordinator working in partnership with the Partners Council. For Champonships events, the Host may also require a minimum level of financial resources to supplement the host grant. Other criteria for consideration include available facilities, a strong volunteer base, past hosting experience, geographic location. The selection process will also consider the importance of having events delivered in different communities throughout the province (while also considering accessibility) and in regions where that particular sport has a strong history and presence.

Financial ConsiderationsTo support the planning and delivery of the events, the Partners Council will issue Hosting Grants to the host to help offset a portion to majority of the core operating costs. However, those considering the opportunity to host a Championship or Camp must also evaluate their ability to contribute resources to the planning and delivering the event through their own resources (e.g. host contribution to support funds, revenue from sponsorship, registration fees, volunteer resources, value-in-kind donations, etc.).

Dates of Championships/CampsSome sports have flexibility with regards to the time of year that an event can be delivered (e.g. badminton, swimming) whereas some sports are seasonal and dependent on venue availability (e.g. lacrosse). The successful host will need to indicate preferred date(s) for delivering the event but note that granting the event on preferred dates cannot be guaranteed.

Application DeadlineApplications are requested to be typewritten and submitted electronically to the attention of the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council before 4:00 pm (PST), Friday, May 1, 2015 to [email protected] or fax to 1-877-711-5594 (toll-free).

Questions regarding the application process should be directed to Lara Mussell Savage, Manager Sport Development & Competitions at the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, at 250-388-5522 ext 233 or email [email protected].
