Transformation is a complex concept to explain to young children. As we enter the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter we contemplate more intentionally the notions of eternal life, resurrection and transformation, and what that might mean for ourselves. Their meaning for young children seems so much more abstract and complex. How do we explain Jesus resurrection and why his disciples could not immediately recognise him? Or the notion of eternal life? This picture book offers a concrete way of engaging young children in such conversations.

Tom is given a daffodil bulb by his elderly neighbour, Mr Yilmaz, to plant. However, all Tom can see is an onion. As the onion grows through various stages to become a big yellow daffodil, Tom becomes more interested and sees a variety of things appear from the terracotta pot: first nothing, then with some watering and sun a green beak appeared; that then opened up to be a hand with five flat fingers; then a wet rocket until finally a yellow daffodil was revealed a trumpet of gold!

This story could initiate some creative and engaging investigation into how the bulb transformed to become a yellow daffodil. It would be also useful to explore the notion of eternal life: even though the daffodil will die, its bulb can be replanted again and again. We do not always recognise the bulb as a daffodil but a daffodil it is.
