Elective Course Descriptions: 6 th -11 th grade Each student should indicate their top three elective choices on the Consents Form, which is due on May 1, 2015. Electives with low enrollment will be dropped and students given another choice. You will be informed of your child’s placement via email by the end of May. Art (6 th -11 th ) Students will employ a variety of artistic media in the creation of many works of visual art. Students will participate in lessons involving drawing, painting, sculpture, pottery, and crafts. Students will learn about various artists, art techniques, art vocabulary and art history. Students will learn that God’s word is pervasive in every area of our lives and we can worship Him through our artwork as we incorporate His Word into selected art lessons. This class will also include an extra emphasis on drawing. Homework: Students will complete many works of art throughout the school year and will be expected to follow directions, complete each assignment and do their personal best. Students will receive a grade for each in- class project. High school students will also receive homework grades. Middle school students will not have written homework. High school students who successfully complete this course will earn 1 fine arts credit. Bible (6th-11th) Volume 3 in Apologia's What We Believe series, Who is My Neighbor? And Why Does He Need Me? helps children understand how to live as Christians who are salt and light in the world, in their country, in their family, and in their lives wherever they go. Homework: Students will have assigned reading from the text. They will have notes to fill in, a response sheet, or another activity weekly. Text: Who is My Neighbor? And Why Does He Need Me? Bridge Building (6th-8th)The course will cover the basic concepts of bridges and the seven major bridge types (Beam, Truss, Cantilever, Bascule, Arch, Suspension, & Cable-Stayed) using the K’nex building pieces. Students will have an opportunity to investigate bridge structures and develop a general understanding of the forces involved in these structures. Students will work in teams to build 5-6 foot long replicas of each bridge type.Homework: Students will receive brief assignments designed to help develop and reinforce concepts learned in class.

Beginner: This course is designed to teach students software applications that are necessary to live and work in a technological society. The applications covered include word processing, database, spreadsheet, and presentation. Other content areas may include computer hardware, terminology, and concepts.Intermediate: This course of study is designed to teach the student advanced computer concepts as related to processing data into useful information needed in business situations by using advanced database, spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software capabilities.

- Prerequisite: Integrated Business Applications I / Computer Applications

Homework: Students will receive assignments designed to review and reinforce con-cepts introduced in class.

Study Hall (6th-11th)

Materials needed will be specific to each student based on lesson plans sent by parent:

● Parents are required to submit a one-time detailed lesson plan showing what the student should be doing during this hour.

● The teacher will collect lesson plans and keep them in a notebook for reference during the school year.

● In the event that a student’s work assignment changes, the parent will need to send in a new lesson plan.

● If at any time during the year, a student says that he has no school work, the par-ents will be called to verbally submit work, physically bring work to class, or pick up the student. If a parent cannot be reached, the student will then be asked to help around school.

Sample Lesson plan:1. Complete all math work.2. In the event that he finishes all his math, he needs to read his science and complete the

questions.3. Occasionally he may need to complete a different school assignment. Once that is done,

he can begin his normal assignments.

Newspaper (6th-11th)Students will learn journalism skills while generating a monthly newspaper for school distribution. Students will write news, feature, and opinion pieces. They will also conduct interviews and learn how to apply Associated Press style to their assignments.Homework: Students will submit typed assignments for each month’s paper. High school students taking this course for credit will be required to complete additional assignments and will be held to a higher standard.

Physical Education (6th-11th) Students will learn a variety of activities that include fitness, individual sports, and team sports.Homework: High school students taking this course for credit will be required to complete additional assignments and will be held to a higher standard.Domestic Science (6th-11th)Classroom activities/topics will include such food preparation, healthy living, sewing and craft skills.Homework: High school students taking this course for credit will be required to complete additional assignments and will be held to a higher standard.Spanish 1 (8th-11th) & Spanish 2 (9th-11th)Spanish 1 & 2 will include vocabulary, verb conjugation, and conversation. Stu-dents who successfully complete this course will earn 1 foreign language credit.Homework: Students will have weekly assignments and are expected to spend a minimum of 30 minutes/day outside of class working on assignments or studying.Text: Rosetta Stone: must be enrolled via Arrows.Speech & Debate (6th-11th)

Students will learn and practice public speaking skills first semester. Students will continue to improve their public speaking skills during their second semester while being introduced to the basics of debate.Homework: There will be weekly assignments. High school students taking this course for credit will be required to complete additional assignments and will be held to a higher standard.Worship (6th-11th)Throughout the year, we will work together to build a definition of worship, discuss characteristics of an effective worship leader, what makes a good leader in general, and what the heart of a lead worshiper looks like. We will talk about how to make worship work in choosing songs and putting together worship sets together. Students will learn the basic elements of designing and implementing visual presentations. Leadership skills will be developed as students will actively be involved in the leading of our morning assemblies. In addition to playing an instrument, singing and running Pro Presenter during our time of worship, they will take active roles in leading our missions moment, devotions, and teaching students the time line cards. The time we have in class will be greatly enriched by your child's independent practice of his or her instrument coupled with a growing personal pursuit in his/her relationship with God.“Homework: There will be homework for this class. Students are expected to actively participate/perform during morning assembly and are expected to model proper behavior.
