Room (enter off State Street by the Social Hall). The nine sessions begins THIS WEDNESDAY May 3rd.To register, order a book, or any questions, email: [email protected] call 313-319-1188.IN HONOR OF THE BLESSED MOTHER - The months of May and October are set aside with special devotions for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our patron, St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), wrote extensively on the relationship of Mary to the disciples of Jesus. He even experienced apparitions of the Blessed Mother. Scholars today, when looking at the development of our understanding of the role of Mary in the Church, look to the writings and devotion of St. Bernard.

Therefore, it is fitting that in this Community we honor the mother of Jesus Christ and our Mother in this month of May. For those who wish to lead the rosary before the weekend Masses in the church, we invite you to come to begin 20 minutes prior to Mass. If needed, come to the sacristy for the hand-held microphone. PLEASE pray the traditional rosary: Creed, Our Fathers, Hail Marys, Glory be, and either the Hail Holy Queen or the Memorare at the end. Also add, especially this 100th Anniversary of the Visions at Fatima, the "Oh my Jesus..." prayer after each decade. Anything else is your private devotion which can be done privately. Thanks.

ROO CATHOLIC -Where has the year gone?! THIS WEDNESDAY, May 3, we will have our Send-Off for University of Akron Seniors with Mass and Dinner at 6:30pm Join us to pray for and congratulate the Graduating Class of 2017. Also check out the RooCatholic website for other upcoming events.

Each year in the Diocese of Cleveland a Second Collection is taken in all parishes to support Catechetical Ministries, which includes Newman Campus Ministry, the Training of Catechists, etc. This year the collection will be May 13/14 throughout the Diocese. God bless you for your support to the formation and education of our youth and young adult Catholics.

Fr. Dan's Exercise Challenge for those over 65 -Take two 5 lb. bags of potatoes and hold one bag in each hand. Lift the bag straight out at your side. Hold the bags in that position for at least one minute. When you can hold them for the full minute, take two 10 lb. bags and lift them straight out to your side and hold them until you can for one full minute. When you achieve this level lift two 50 lb. bags for a minute (this is the level I am at!). When you have achieved this level, start again with the 5 lb. bags but this time put one potato in each bag.

This means that he will reside at St. Bernard Rectory (St. Mary no longer has one) and be available to the parishes two-three days per week. He will be compensated for those days alone. In two years, Father can request full retirement status. Until then, I am thrilled he will continue with us - preaching the Word and serving the Lord among us.

THANK YOU! - Again this year we are grateful for our volunteers who responded to the care of our St. Bernard Cemetery. Under the leadership of Rich Williams the clean-up crew removed a large fallen tree limb with a chain saw, raked leaves away from the fence line for mulching, emptied trash barrels, and secured any fallen headstones. For sure, your work is a Corporal Work of Mercy. God bless you!

Dear Community of St. Bernard,Over the years people have brought back

bulletins from parishes where they attended Mass while away from our worshipping Community. It's not a way to see if people are going to Mass on the road, but I find it interesting to read some of the questions other pastors and parishioners address. And sometimes the bulletin contains a great idea we might try here. The following are some things I've seen:

How Long Should Mass Be? - "There's no rule about how long Mass should last, but it's inappropriate to arrive late or leave before the final blessing...People should leave early only if they get sick or if they are emergency personnel called away for an emergency."

"Saturday day night Masses were designed for people who work Sundays and for parishes with too few priests to accommodate everyone on Sunday - they weren't designed to make it easier to get a good tee time on Sunday morning." Fr. Patrick Keyes, CSSR

Can I receive Communion without going to confession? - "When you receive the Eucharist you affirm that you are in a state of grace, reconciled with God and the Church. If you are in a state of mortal sin you must abstain from receiving the Eucharist until you go to Confession. A mortal sin consists of a serious action through which a person turns away from

God's law and charity, fully understands the action is wrong and chooses to commit it freely. If you have committed venial sins, you may still receive the Eucharist. Venial sins are sins which wound our relationship with God, but consist of less serious matters." Fr. Jarek

When should a priest be called for the Last Rites? - The Last Rites are actually three Sacraments: Confession, Anointing of the Sick, and Communion. They are intended to be celebrated together when a person is conscious and can participate. That is the time a priest should be called; when a person's health has declined severely, or, the person is beginning hospice/palliative care. These days calling a priest at the last minute - and then only to give the anointing because the person is unconscious - is not encouraged. And now with fewer priests, there is the likelihood a priest will not be found or available in time. Fr. Lanning, Fairview, Ohio

How Can We Model the Faith for Our Children? - "The best way that we can teach our children is by serving as a living example to them of how to live as disciples of Christ. If we want our children to grow up as strong Catholics and to display a lifelong commitment to their faith, then it is important that we ourselves live a committed faith life. This includes an ongoing commitment to our own faith formation as adults and active participation in the Sacraments." Fr. O'Connor, Avon, OhioI recently received this question: Can a person take the Host and dip it in the Precious Blood to receive Communion? - This practice known as "Intinction" is common in other Rites, such as the Byzantine or Maronite Rites, but it is not the norm in the Latin Rite. It may be done by a priest for a specific reason and in a prescribed manner. Some Catholics, particularly in the cold and flu season, take it upon themselves to receive the Host in their hand and then dip it in the Precious Blood. Jesus' instruction to his disciples is clear "Take and eat" and "Take and drink"; never 'Take and dip'. If you are concerned about receiving from the cup for whatever reason, do not receive from the cup. Whether under the form of bread or wine we receive both the Body and the Blood of Jesus Christ. The laity and ministers at the altar, including ordained deacons, are not permitted to give Communion to themselves. They are to "take", that is to 'receive', from another as though from Christ.

Here at St. Bernard if a Communicant receives in their hands and walk away from the priest or minister without consuming, be aware that our training is to stop you and kindly inform you to consume the Host before going farther. Also, Eucharistic Ministers of the Cup may kindly remind you and prohibit dipping into the cup.

Page 5: Web viewLift the bag straight out at ... preaching the Word and serving ... Todos están invitados a comprar la comida para servirse en el salón social o también

When receiving the Eucharist in your hands, it is proper to place one hand over the other to receive in the palm of one hand and place the Host in your mouth with the other. If you cannot do this because you are holding a child or a cane in the other hand, please extend your tongue. Receiving the Host in one free hand and kind of tiddling-winking it or popping it into your mouth is inappropriate. Receive on the tongue or momentarily free both hands to receive the Host.

Finally, Eucharistic Ministers please remember that if you plan to bring Communion to the homebound, please bring the pyx to the sacristy before Mass and tell the priest how many you need, OR, after you have received Communion then RETURN at the end of the Communion line with your pyx and tell the priest or minister how many Hosts you need - as per diocesan training. Then go directly to the homebound after Mass.

When you bring back a bulletin I also see that larger parishes have more pages, usually all in color, and with three or four pages of advertisements/sponsors to pay for the bulletin. I appreciate very much the sponsors on the back of our bulletin. Their advertisements pretty well pay for the printing and delivery of our weekly bulletin. I try to estimate how many bulletins we need so we are not wasting paper. On average we have 550 bulletins for our 464 households.

I also see that in a few parishes their entire bulletin is multilingual, most often English and Spanish. But a few bulletins are trilingual, including Vietnamese. It is very reflective of our Catholic Church in the United States.

A Good Easter Season, Fr. Dan
