With the effort, she flags off the journey of the famed Makaibari tea, which was recently sold for about Rs. 1.1 lakh per kilo. In a day Amrita completes two trips, 5km each, from the factory to the garden and back. The basket on her back, full of leaves, weights about30 kg and is held in position with a rope that loops around her forehead. Amrita gets Rs. 90 a day for playing her part, but basks in the glory of working at "such a famous tea garden." She gets 250 gm of the lower grade tea with her monthly salary as a bonus. The Makaibari tea company's target consumers are mostly in Europe and more than 90 percent of the produce is exported. About 550 tea pluckers make up one of the biggest female workforces in Darjeeling and they do their plucking on the estate in Kurseong, which is a little more than 5000 m above sea level. The tea slopes are located between layers of forests, which are home to many wild beasts, including leopards. Makaibari produces four varieties black oolong, green and white.
