For a random act of kindness I went to the American Red Cross to donate blood. My blood type is O-.
This is the most needed blood type. O- blood will mix with any type of blood so if there is an accident
and someone needs blood immediately and they don’t have time to test someone’s blood they can give
them O- and it will mix with any other type. Because it is the only one that can mix with anything it puts
it in a higher demand. Because of this, the people are very appreciative to receive the donation.
The process is fairly quick. They ask a few questions and check your health and blood to make sure that
you are in good shape to donate. The actual donation only takes about 5-10 minutes and it is nice
knowing you could be saving lives. Blood is one of the few things that science has not been able to come
up with a manufactured product to replace so it is very important that people take the time to do this
life saving measure.

For a random act of kindness I bought my daughter a couple of cases of Rockstar.
She is also attending college and is coming up on her finals. She has been working
full time and trying to keep up with her homework. She is just down to her last two
tests and stays up late at night trying to get in her last bit of studying. One of her
favorite drinks is Rockstar to give her the little bit of extra energy so I figured this
would be a great gift for her.
I am really proud of her for working and trying to take school to better herself and
hopefully get a more successful career. She was very appreciative of the drinks and
that I acknowledge everything that she is trying to do. I like to do little things like
this so she knows that I am trying to be supportive of her efforts.

For a random act of kindness I bought tickets to a play and took my Mom to it. It
was at the Salt Lake Acting Company and is called Streetlight Woodpecker. We had
a really good time going together and it was nice to spend time with her one on
one. Whenever we get together we are usually with other people and it doesn’t give
us much time to catch up with each other. I think that she really appreciated the
fact that it was just going to be the two of us. I also think that there is something
about getting older that has really made me appreciate my parents and all that
they have done for me. It has made me realize how lucky I am to have such great
influences on me and how supportive they have been for me throughout my life.
The play was really good and thought provoking. It was about a man that comes
back from the Marines and has to deal with emotional and physical issues from
before he left for the service as well as issues when he returns injured.

For a random act of kindness I took my sister to Victoria Secret in the mall. My sister
and I were always close growing up. She is the one in the family that has always
been the happy go lucky one that always has a smile on her face and can make
anyone laugh. A few years ago she was hurt at work and hasn’t been able to work
since. Last fall her husband was in a motorcycle accident so he hasn’t been able to
work either so money has been really tight for them.
She went out of town with me a couple of weeks ago and we shared a room. I
looked at her bras and went “WOW, how old are those things”? She said that she
has just been wearing hand me downs from my mom. She said she didn’t have
money for new ones and has actually never been measured to find out what her
real size was.
I decided to take her to the mall to Victoria Secret and buy her some new bras that
actually fit her. I didn’t tell her why we were going, I just asked her to go to the mall
with me. We not only had a great time shopping and laughing she was really
appreciative that I took the time out to not only go shopping, because everyone
knows I hate shopping, but to buy them for her. She kept saying she would pay me
back but I told her that wasn’t the point, I just wanted to do something nice for her
to show how much I appreciate everything that she has done for me my whole life.

For a random act of kindness I cooked dinner for my friend who has been sick. She
has a disease that is really rare and only about 1,000 people in the world have it so
there is not a lot of knowledge about it. It affects her muscles so when it got really
bad she could not move and it started affecting her heart and lungs. They put her
on medication and in physical therapy and she had gotten some of the movement
back but she still struggles to get around.
I made big bowls of chili, salad and bread. This is also something that is easy to
heat up for leftovers and can be eaten plain or over something like a hotdog or
hamburger so it can be switched up a little and also freezes well for storage for
another day.
She is always sweet and appreciates anything that is done for her. She is really
stubborn and independent so she doesn’t like to ask for help but is grateful when
someone does something for her.

For a random act of kindness I bought some Girl Scout cookies from some Girl
Scouts selling them in the Taco Bell parking lot. I wrote a note on each of the boxes
saying thanks you for being a great neighbor. I put a box on some of my neighbors
that have either been helpful or friendly in the past.
I do not know what their reaction was because I placed them on their porch after it
was dark so that they would find them in the morning.
I enjoy doing things like this for my neighbors because I appreciate everyone’s help
and friendliness. It is also nice to know that they watch my place for my while I am
away.

For a random act of kindness I bought my friend one of her favorite perfumes that
she had run out of and dropped it off on her porch. She had mentioned that she was
out of it but was waiting to save up some money for it.
She called me and asked me if I had bought it and I said I didn’t know what she was
talking about but she said she knew it was me because I am one of the few people
that know what type of perfume she likes. She was really happy to have it.
It made me feel good because she is always doing things for other people. She is
one of the most generous and giving people that I know so it made me happy to be
able to do something for her.

For a random act of kindness I left a card and a Starbuck’s gift certificate on the
desk of a girl at work. She has been a great friend to me at work. She has been
having a really hard time lately. She has recently started AA and has been working
on her sobriety. About two weeks ago her boss passed away unexpectedly and they
were very close. She also got some discouraging news when she went to apply for a
promotion and was not even considered for an interview and was told that her
WAFC Certificate was a stepping stone but did not qualify for the education needed
for the position. She has been the person I have gone to when I had questions about
school and has been very supportive. She seemed upset when I talked to her the
day before so I left her the card and gift certificate saying how much I appreciated
her. She came over to my desk in tears and told me thank you for thinking of her
and that I had made her day. It made me feel really good that a simple gesture
meant so much to someone.

For a random act of kindness I was at the drive up window of a fast food company. I
told the cashier that I would like to pay for the car behind me. I asked them to tell
the person that their food had been paid for and to have a great day. I am not sure
how they reacted because by the time they got to the window I had pulled away
and driven off. I would like to think that they were happy about the free meal. I
think it would be pretty cool to have that happen to me.
(I didn’t have a picture to confirm this activity, SORRY!)

For a random act of kindness I am giving a card to one of the store directors. A girl
that used to work in the store with my daughter recently transferred to his store.
The store that they were both working in was making them miserable. The store
management is not engaged and if employees go to them with concerns they just
feel that they are complaining and don’t want to hear their comments. The make
unrealistic demands on them and there are health code issues. They tried different
avenues to try and get the situation corrected to no avail. Her friend was about
ready to quit the company when she was able to transfer to his store. She said it
has been a night and day change. She says Brian is engaged with his employees,
does huddles both in the morning and the evening and invites all of the available
employees to attend so they all know what is going on with the store and the
company. Her attitude towards work and Smiths has been a complete change and
she is actually happy to be an employee. I am giving this card to him anonymously
so I don’t know what his reaction is. I also think this will help because I don’t want
him to know which employee it is that has given him the praise I just think it is
important that he realizes how his style of management has had such a positive
effect on employees.

For my project I decided to collect food and drinks for the Homeless Youth Resource
Center.
This center is part of the Volunteers of America organization. It services the
homeless youth in Salt Lake. It currently is a drop in center for youths to be able to
come in and eat, pick up needed supplies, do laundry, take a shower or use the
computer. It currently does not allow a place for them to sleep but they will be
relocating in May and will have additional space which should have some housing. I
like this place to donate because I feel that teenagers are at a point in their life that
which path they take can have a lasting effect on their life. I also feel that this is the
group that gets forgotten about by society.
I worked with some of my friends and co-workers to come up with soda pop and
some food to take down to the shelter. One of my friends came down with his truck
and we loaded all of the product that was collected and delivered it to the center.
When we got there we unloaded it into their storage room where they take all
donations and sort them into categories. They then allow the people in need to
come through and pick different items that they need.
I have been down there before to take donations but this was probably the lowest
that I have seen their shelves. They are always so grateful for anything that they
can get and the youth that happen to be there are always so nice and always offer
to help carry in whatever you are bringing them.

The Chinese New Year began on Monday February 8th. This year it is the “Year of the
Fire Monkey”. Several restaurants in Salt Lake celebrate the holiday with one of
those being the Asian Star in Midvale.
The food served gives customers a great variety of Chinese cuisine. I enjoyed egg
drop soup, lettuce wraps, pot stickers and also family style dining on the main
courses so we got to try a variety of different types of entrees.
One thing that I did learn was I was wrong about the performers. I always thought
that the performers were dragon dancers. I learned that they are actually lion
dancers. The main difference between the two is that the dragon dance is
performed by a team of a dozen or so performers while the lion dance only has two
dancers in the costume.
The purpose of the lion or the dragon dance is to bring good luck and to scare evil
spirits away.
The lion dancers are also accompanied by the “laughing Buddha”. The Buddha
teases the lion with his fan and makes him jump and move around.
The performers are usually from a martial arts school. The restaurant owner hangs
lettuce from different spots in the restaurant. Inside the lettuce are red envelopes
that have money in them. The lion dancers will climb on each other’s shoulders to
reach up and grab them and that is how they are paid for their performance. They
then will “spit” the lettuce out on people which is supposed to bring that person
good luck. People in the restaurant will also feed the lion red envelopes with cash in
them. This is supposed to bring good luck and fortune to that person and also goes
as a donation to the martial arts school.

For my project I went and volunteered at Orchard Elementary in West Valley City. I
took a vacation day off of work on a Friday. I checked in with the office at 8:30 and
the students came in about 5 minutes after that. I started in a 5th grade class and
helped start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance. I explained to them who I was
and what I was doing at the school. We served them breakfast and took role while
they were eating after that I gave them a spelling test and collected papers.
After that I moved down to the Kindergarten class. I introduced myself to them as
well and then helped make copies for the teacher of worksheets for them to use at
another date. I laminated different things for the teacher, cut things out for the
classroom and got prizes ready for the treasure box that they get to pick something
out of as a reward.
I went back to the 5th grade class and they were just getting ready to take their turn
at cleaning up the playground. They had all of the different classes take a part of
the playground and pick up some of the trash to keep their school nice. When they
were done we had them play some games on the grass until it was time to go
home. Friday is their early day so the bell rang around 1:00 or 1:15. I was at the
school for not quite 5 hours helping but the time went by really fast.
I have to say this was probably one of my favorites out of the projects that I have
done for this assignment. It has been a long time since my kids were that small and
so I haven’t been around that environment in a long time. The kids were a lot of fun
to be around and it was fun to be able to help them with their assignments. They
were so eager to show me how they had done after they finished. They were even
asking if I would come back and help out at their school again.
The teachers were very appreciative of the help. They were saying that
unfortunately they do not have a lot of parent support as far as volunteer work to
help with the kids. They felt that by my helping them it gave them time to get some
other things done instead.
