December 2015

“What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.” ~John 1:4-5, The Message

Were you ever caught in a storm ill-prepared, and the lights go out and you’re suddenly surrounded only by darkness? The darkness can be crippling in such a moment, as you scramble to find something to brighten the space so you can see. A simple snap of a match and the thick darkness disappears like magic as your eyes take in the room before you once again.

The story of Jesus is that he came into the world in the darkness of the night, but he came into the darkness of the world as well. The People of God were living under the oppressive rule of the Roman Empire, many lived in great poverty and they were splintering into groups of differing theologies and ideologies.

The infant Jesus brought light to the darkness in which the weary Israeli people lived. Today, Jesus comes like the spark of the match brings light in a storm. Lonely? Overwhelmed? Tired out? Even in the darkest moments, we can hold to the hope that Jesus is with us to light the way before us.

May the hope of Jesus be with you through this blessed season and well beyond: God IS with us! This is the gift that remains with us long after the holiday is past. No matter what comes your way, know that the fullness of God is with you always.

Merry Christmas!

~ Pastor Laura

Being a greeter is an easy way to serve Asbury. All that is required is a smile! However, it is a vital component to the church. After all, you are the first impression a visitor receives of our family. If you are able to come to church a little early, put on a nametag, stand or sit at the entrance to the Sanctuary and smile, we need you! There is a sign-up sheet located in Wesley Hall. Pick a few weeks during the year, and let everyone see how welcoming we are at Asbury. Fellowship Hour 10:00 a.m.

Fellowship Hour is a wonderful part of Asbury life. After the 10:00 a.m. service, we all meet in Wesley Hall where we catch up with old friends, make new ones, discuss upcoming events, and maybe purchase a scrip card. But we need coffee and tea, some juice, and a snack. We need you! If you are able to brew coffee and bring a snack, then you can be a Fellowship Hour host or hostess. The sign-up sheet is located in Wesley Hall,

Altar Flowers

Every Sunday flowers are placed on the altar in remembrance or celebration by the individuals and families of Asbury. Flowers may be ordered through the church office for $30.00 or you may bring in your own. If you bring in your own flowers, please remember that they must be on the Altar before the 8:30 a.m. service. A sign-up sheet is located outside the choir room.

From Our CommitteesIt is with heartfelt gratitude and awe that I say THANK YOU to all the wonderful people who made the 2015 Pork Roast Dinner another fabulous success this year! Between donations and ticket sales, the proceeds for Asbury UMC were very close to $1700.00. It is both amazing and inspiring to be part of our Asbury family that can create this delicious feast that fed close to 200 people, and offered an evening of fellowship for over 150 people. Thank you, thank you to the following kind hearted and very talented souls who made it all possible:

Our Kitchen Crew - Bob Bolduc, Norm Fusaro, Tom Esten, Jay Burrows, John Amadio, Jeff Achilli

Our Food Prep - Heidi Borkowski, Gardner Wright, JoAnn Bacon, Eula Foster, Wayne Bacon, Jim Doncet, Kelly Amadio, Lenny Cannon, Michelle Bruce, Deb Bechert and her awesome daughter Kate

Ticket Sales – Melissa Gray, JoAnn Bacon

Our Set up Crew – Lorna Baxter, Jennifer Burrows and her wonderful kids, Lori Schafferick and her fabulous daughter Katie, Lenny Cannon, Karren Grayson

Our Serving Crew – the AMAZING Boyscouts with their fearless leader April (you folks rock!), Geri Beveridge and her magnificent daughter Carli, Lori Schaffrick, Katie Schaffrick, Michelle Bruce and Pastor Laura

Our Cleanup Crew – almost all of the MARVELOUS FOLKS listed above who already gave so much of themselves.

So proud to be part of this great church familyAmy Majors

Membership Committee Head Geri Beveridge would like to thank the entire Membership Committee and everyone who helped with the planning and reception that honored our 50 year members on Sunday, November 29th.

The Yankee Peddlar Fair Co-chairs, Geri Beveridge and Pat Sallstrom would like to thank all the members of Asbury who helped to make our 95th fair such a success. Whether you headed up an entire room, helped set up, decorated, made a craft, baked, made pies, cooked, served, donated food or goods, helped advertise, clean up or just came and bought something, you are part of the reason that Asbury is such a great place. We are hopeful that when the final tally is made this will be the most successful fair yet.

We would like to thank Amy Majors, Geri Beveridge and Pat Sallstrom for their tireless efforts in making the Pork Roast Dinner and the Yankee Peddlar Fair two of our most successful fundraisers.

Dear Christian Outreach and Asbury,

On behalf of Prudence Crandall Center, thank you for your incredible donation of toiletries for our clients! We are so grateful for your thoughtfulness in helping us provide for the daily needs of the victims and families we serve. Our work would not be possible without partners like all of you.

Days for Girls kits are made for girls living where feminine hygiene products can’t be purchased and/or can’t be disposed of properly. These girls are unable to attend school during their monthly cycle. The girls must stay home alone missing school and fall behind missing as much as one school year in three years. These girls are vulnerable to being victimized when left home alone or even in orphanages staying in their rooms. They would be safer in their school. They usually fall behind and quit school before age 15. Each kit, packed in an attractive drawstring bag, gives a girl the opportunity for three years of uninterrupted schooling. With education they can have a better future.

Simsbury UMC has a goal of making 250 Days for Girls kits before Easter which will be the one year anniversary of beginning this project through the leadership of Jan Baker. We would like to invite Asbury UMC and their friends to be a part of this project because of our close connection to Ghana. This first set of kits will be sent to the girls of the Awombrew village school.

Volunteers are needed, young teens, men and women who can help to cut, iron, and learn to sew these kits at monthly workshops in Fellowship Hall at Sumc. The next workshop will be January 23rd from 9am - 12. We have opportunities for sewers and non sewers. If you have a sewing machine to bring that is helpful but not necessary, scissors, a cutting board and rotary cutter can be used. If you have a serger, that would help as well. There are many steps to making these kits. Working in assembly line fashion makes the process faster.

The project also welcomes donations of cotton fabrics, quality flannels, as well as girls underwear (briefs) sizes 10-16, wash cloths, and hotel sized bars of soap. (Please no white underwear or fabrics please)

More information is available from their website www.daysforgirls.org

If you can come, have donations, or want more information, please contact Donna Motyl by phone (860)416-9971 or email ([email protected]).

Hello everyone:Coming in February 2016 –I will be offering two classes for everyone. 1).        The first class is Advanced Tai-Chi Class, in this class we will work on section 3 of Dr. Lam’s Tai-Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. The third section goes deep into Tai-Chi forms as well as challenging balance movements and a good deal of new material. This is the next step in developing your Tai-Chi. During the first two weeks we will review the first two sections. Hope to see you there. 2).        The second class that I will be offering will be a combination of Qigong & Meditation. Qigong is a thousand year old practice which concentrates on movements to attain health and vitality through movement of the Qi. Although similar to Tai-Chi, Qigong does not move as much. The mediation segment of the class (approximately 30 minutes) will be a guided meditation. We will follow an audio tape as we walk through the basics of meditation and relaxation.  Hope to see many of you in one or both classes. Start dates – days and times will be out shortly. Registration forms will available in the near future.
