Careers

BAM people are different. That’s what makes our business different… and successful.

Throughout BAM's businesses, and at all our UK locations, we can offer career opportunities in a wide variety of disciplines and at all levels from trainee to management.

Who do we recruit?

• [Hyperlink] Experienced construction industry professionals

• Recent graduates: largely from construction-related degree programs, who join our [hyperlink] Graduate scheme

• Current and future university and college students, looking for [hyperlink] industrial placements and [hyperlink] day release training

Why work for BAM?

• The projects: BAM is responsible for some of the most prestigious buildings in the UK. But it’s not just the high-profile projects that win awards where we’re challenging the norm. We bring our collective rigour and creativity to every client’s building…

See [hyperlink] BAM Stories for just a few recent examples.

• The people: inspiring, dedicated, experienced, customer-oriented, trustworthy, creative, determined, practical, reliable, considerate, diverse, team-focused…

• The working environment: each project is different, each BAM office has its own character, but all have some things in common

People enjoy working there, they feel safe and well looked-after, and they have great fun. Especially when they’re sharing experiences, both related to work and to our community and charity involvement

Our selection process is tough but fair, because we have to get it right: for you and for us.

You’ll need a demonstrable track record in your chosen area. But more than that, you’ll need to show us how you’re different. How your thinking aligns with ours.

Graduates and students

The construction industry has never been more inspiring and dynamic. We’re looking for equally inspiring and dynamic people to be part of its future… and ours.

Among the larger construction companies, BAM stands out as being rather different. The difference is our people.

Take a look at our [hyperlink] video, where recent graduates who’ve joined BAM talk about what it’s like to work for us.

What can BAM offer?

If you want to work on projects that stretch the boundaries of construction. That very often engender a huge sense of pride among the people that work, study, are cared for, visit or live in them. That win awards… you’ll find them in BAM. See [hyperlink] BAM Stories for just a few recent examples.

These highly challenging projects are created by an inspirational team of people. And you could be part of that team.

When we take on someone new at BAM, we make a commitment to you for the long term. That means investing in your career development, structured training and accreditation.

Because we’re rather keen on ‘growing our own’: we prefer to promote from within than to recruit experienced people from outside the company. So we’ll nurture as well as challenge you.

The people who’ve grown up with BAM know and share our culture: dynamic, highly professional, innovative… but above all focused on clients, people and teams.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for people studying a wide range of disciplines including:- Construction management- Quantity surveying- Architecture- Design management - Sustainability…

We’ll also consider other subjects that are relevant to the construction industry.

What type of people do we need? You’ll need to demonstrate to us that your approach aligns with our priorities:

• Focusing on our clients and their end users

Page 5: Web view[BAM website update: Careers. Landing page] [page heading and intro para] Careers. BAM people are different. That’s what makes our business different and successful

• Finding creative but highly practical solutions

• Committed to being sustainable.

How can I become part of BAM?

If you’re just starting out on your career path, we have several options:

• Take a look at our [hyperlink] Graduate scheme

• Discover whether you might qualify for one of our [hyperlink] Industrial placements

Graduate scheme

If you’re looking for real responsibility and influence from the start, you’ve come to the right place.

Each year we take a select number of people onto our Graduate Development Scheme. It’s a structured approach designed to nurture and train you, at the same time as you’re working on live projects.

Because if you join us as a graduate you’ll be in a real job from day one, working alongside experienced BAM team members.

You’ll be learning from them, but we’ll also expect you to positively contribute to the project. To bring your own ideas, and make a difference.

How do we develop you?

You’ll benefit from a structured development programme that’s relevant to your job area. These programmes are designed to shape our future leaders and give you the experience you need to gain chartered membership of a professional body.

Typically these are the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

We make every effort to make sure your working environment and training will actively help you to evolve, both professionally and personally.

You’ll be included in BAM's staff appraisal scheme and have regular contact with a dedicated Learning and Development Manager.

Day release trainee scheme

If you want the best of both worlds – working and studying – we run day release schemes with educational institutions throughout the UK.

Typically our trainees are recent school or college leavers with a strong academic track record.

You'll take part in a structured training programme, while continuing your university or college course on a day release basis.

The programme is designed to give you a broad appreciation of the whole construction process.

Many of our senior managers and directors have graduated through our day release scheme. This reflects the standard of learning and development on the programme, and how well regarded it is in BAM.

Financial support

We understand how expensive going to university has become.

So as well as giving you a competitive salary, we’ll also pay your course tuition and examination fees.

That means you can develop practical experience while gaining an academic qualification, protected from the financial burden of higher education

But it doesn't stop there! We’ll guide and encourage you to achieve chartered membership of a relevant professional body.

What happens to your application?

Our experienced recruitment team will handle your application. They will consider it fairly and in line with our commitment to equal opportunities.

We'll keep you informed about your progress at all stages of the selection process.

Keeping your details on file

There may be times when we have been impressed by what we have read in your application or seen of you, but cannot offer you a job. It may be that there isn't a specific job in your interest area, or that we've already filled the positions.

Tips for success

Take some time to prepare for your interview: present yourself realistically but positively.

Make your application stand out

• Make sure your CV is well organised, logical and easy to understand: list your experience, education and qualifications in chronological order

• Include everything that's relevant, but keep it brief

• Take some time to think about your accomplishments, including volunteer activities, jobs, projects, assignments, travel and team activities: identify the personal qualities they brought out in you

• Make sure your CV is up to date

• Do a final check of your CV for spelling mistakes and errors

• Take time to think about your responses on the application form, especially why you want to build a career in construction and why BAM is your employer of choice

• Spell check again!

Approaching the interview/assessment day

Preparation is the key to reducing interview nerves and delivering a successful performance.

• Make sure you can talk confidently about everything on your CV and application form

• Research the position, and assess the skills and experience we’re looking for against your own. Review your background and think of specific examples highlighting what you have to offer

• Explore as much as you can about BAM. This website is a good place to start. You might also find useful information in newspapers, business press and information at your university, college or school careers service

• Prepare a list of questions: they should be perceptive and help you assess whether the role, and our company, is right for you

• Plan your travel route to the interview well in advance, leave early enough to overcome any last-minute delays. You don't want to turn up a sweaty mess!

• Arrive a little early, take some deep breaths and relax

Page 15: Web view[BAM website update: Careers. Landing page] [page heading and intro para] Careers. BAM people are different. That’s what makes our business different and successful

• Be smart, wear business dress for all interview and assessment events. Remember you are on show!

• Engage with your interviewer, pay attention throughout and take your time to answer questions fully

• Stay positive when discussing difficult scenarios in your academic or work experience. Take the positives out of negative situations and express what you have learnt and how you’ve developed as a result

• Rehearse answers to potential questions – it'll help you feel much more confident and professional when the actual interview takes place

• Be honest! If you don't know or understand something, say so

• If you're keen to work with us after hearing all we have to tell you, then tell us: it will leave a positive last impression

• Finally, be yourself. It's the surest way to succeed.

Good luck!

BAM has strong links with education. We build and maintain many schools, colleges and university buildings.

And we think it’s important for young people to get to know the reality behind the hard hats and the big diggers.

Fake job offers

Don’t be fooled! We NEVER email anyone to offer them a job. If you get a job offer by email that seems to come from BAM – it is a fraud.

Beware of hoax or fake job offers from people pretending to be recruiting for BAM.

We always go through a formal recruitment process. We do not recruit by email and we do not use on-line questionnaires.

We always carry out an interview before making a job offer to anyone.

If you receive an email offering you a job with us, it is not genuine and you should not respond to it.

How to spot a fake job offer

You should be very suspicious of anyone who contacts you by email to offer you a job. These emails will usually have some of the following features:

• Ask for your passport details, or any other personal or financial information

• Ask you to pay money to help with a visa application

• Tell you to provide the information quickly

• Provide a mobile telephone number, often starting with +44 (0) 70

• Come from a Google, Hotmail, Yahoo or other Internet hosted account. (Even if it seems to come from a company, don’t use the Reply button but instead type in the address manually. If the address changes then it is likely to be a fraud.)

You need to be very careful because sometimes the fraudsters use the photographs and names of real people in companies and create fake websites that look very similar to the company’s genuine website in order to commit this type of fraud.

What to do if you get an email offering you a job at BAM

If you receive a job offer by email, that seems to come from BAM, you can check whether the offer is genuine or not by contacting us via our [hyperlink] enquiry form.

We will then ask you to send us further details if required to help the police investigate any fraudulent offers.

We also advise you to contact your own local police service and provide them with the details of the email.
