JUNE 2017 Newsletter # 2 A Word From Your President (Len): We are half way through 2017 already! By any measure this has been a great year so far. We have completed 5 enjoyable rallies and had several new members join. The next 6 months promises to be just as exciting as we travel to various parts of the State and just enjoy using our caravans. Your Committee had a packed agenda for its meeting on 10 April at the Hillview Lifestyle Village. I thought I would use this column to list some of the important decisions that were taken and give you a progress report on some of the work that is under way. There was a change to the Committee elected at our AGM. Stan Wysocki (Rally Coordinator) resigned due to work commitments. Merilyn Del Borrello was the only nominee for the vacant position and took up her responsibilities from 1 st July. The Committee decided to use Dropbox to store Club documents securely. All official documents are now stored in the Cloud via Dropbox. The Secretary is finalising details such as access rights etc. For those interested in more information please contact John Riseley or Michael Keeble. The Committee decided to create its own Web Page that will be linked to the WAACCI site. Our current site is dated and we have limited control of the site. Michael Keeble and John Riseley have done a lot of work on this project. The basic structure of the new web site has been completed. Input and comments will be sought from Members shortly. Communication between the Committee and Members was discussed at length. The aim is to make sure we communicate effectively and transparently. Members are provided with Agendas so that they can attend meetings if they wish. Minutes of Meetings, Newsletters and emails are also used to keep members informed. Please take some time to read them. If you have any questions or feedback on Club issues please feel free to contact myself or a Committee member. The process reviewing our Constitution (to make sure it complies with new Regulations) is under way. A discussion document will be prepared for Members highlighting any proposed changes. Once feedback has been received changes may need to be put to a General Meeting. JUNE 2017Newsletter #2

A Word From Your President (Len): We are half way through 2017 already!

Merilyn Del Borrello was the only nominee for the vacant position and took up her responsibilities from 1st July.

The amended Constitution must be submitted to the Department of Commerce by 18 June 2019.

Until next time, happy caravanning!

Attendees; David & Robyn; David & Kate; Maurice & Caroline; Derek & Sandra; John & Trudy; Len & Marilyn; Graham & Sandy; Ric & Lorna; Graham & Kerry; Basil; John & Robyn; Mike & Mollie; Carl & Nardi; Ken & Chris; Ross & Kerry on their first Rally with us! Stan & Jenny in a chalet (16 vans + 1 chalet). Friday 17th 3 vans turned up on Thursday John and Robin, Mike and Molly, and Maurice and Caroline, Site is quite nice, lots of Trees and old buses, very rustic. Included old buses, a telephone booth complete with Spiderman inside, and wild animals at the entrance! Ross and Kerry and Ken and Chris joined us at the rally with the intentions of becoming new members.

Happy Hour: We all met at 5pm in a rather large circle. The rally was opened by Len, and messages passed on by Graham H from WAACCI re the State and National Rallies, the Caravan and Camping Show and a proposed Mystery Rally in October, in lieu of the cancelled Ravenswood Rally. Prospective member Christine alerted us to the Harmony Festival to be held in Katanning on Saturday. The owners of the park Sarah and Ian then laid on a very nice spread of nibbles, which was very kind of them as this was unexpected. Kate also supplied some green pikelets. (It was St Patrick’s Day!!). Saturday 18th We gathered at 9:00am in convoy to head off to The Kodja Place, where we had a guided tour around the museum by Jack, who shared many anecdotes and jokes about early life in the area. After the tour we all went to the Black Cockatoo Café for coffee and Scones. Some of us then ventured outside for a walk in the Rose Garden/Maze, though this was cut short due to impending rain. Remarkably all of us did manage to get out ok! The scheduled picnic in the park was also abandoned as some members headed back to the Caravan Park for lunch with a few of us deciding to head for The Harmony Festival in Katanning.

5:00pm: Happy Hour and Ian (Park Manager) had the log fire roaring. Most of us had Fish and chips around the fire which was very nice as it was quite cold. Finishing supper, the men decided it was time to retreat to the Campers’ Kitchen. Time for a little male-bonding…..with a bottle or two or more…..Ian there as a chaperone?! They said they were all drinking small shots of?? A couple of the women armed with their cameras gate-crashed the kitchen, and standing on chairs, got the proof of what they actually had to drink!! Lots of photos and lots of laughter ensued!!

The newly formed WCJC ‘Men’s Shed’

Sunday 19th: With John and Robyn homeward bound, our convoy headed out to the Kojonup Tourist Railway Station. Sitting on the platform we enjoyed Tea/coffee with scones+ jam+ cream (again!) laid on by the Staff before snapping the group photo beside the ‘Spirit of Kojonup’. Then it was ‘All aboard’ the train as we set out for our 1hr ride. It was very enjoyable with the crew of three stopping to clear the track of weeds (makes the track slippery) and fallen trees along the way. The youngest of the crew was acting as a flag-man to warn road traffic at each of the intersections. Lorna helped by ringing the bell to signal the Train Drivers to move on. At the halfway mark we watched with interest as the men manually used a turntable to turn the train around before

heading back to the station. This was certainly a ride with a difference and a delightful way to spend the morning!

Spring Park was our next stop for a picnic lunch. 1:30pm, as arranged, we met up with Arnold a 90yr old local and member of the Kojonup Historical Society, for a talk about the settlement of the area. Helen, another member of the Historical Society, was also there to film the talk, with our co-operation. Following this interesting and informative chat outside the old Barracks (Built by soldiers in 1845) we ventured inside for a closer look at some of the memorabilia on display before making our way back to the Caravan Park.

5:00pm: Gathering around the fire for Happy Hour, Ian came to say farewell, and commented that we were one of the best groups he has had here (that’s 2 out of the last 3 parks we’ve been told that!!).

The next day people slowly packed up….no real hurry to move on. Some were going up the road to Broomehill, or to Albany for a farm stay, and others were going home. Amongst the wishes for safe travels and a catch-up sometime soon, there was confirmation that all in all this had been another good rally packed with fun times and great company!!

Thank you to Maurice & Caroline and Sandy for their reports

Attendees; Derek & Julia; David & Robyn; Jack & Angie; John & Trudy; Jeff & Wendy; Ric & Lorna; Michael & Caroline; Graham & Kerry; John & Carol; John & Robyn; Mike & Mollie; Carl & Nardi;

Friday 7th It was a lovely easy and picturesque drive up through the hills from Perth and “Roasty” welcomed each caravan as they arrived and ushered them into a suitable spot. All were given quite a roomy space to set up. With all eleven caravans arriving by “happy hour”, our Vice President Derek, welcomed all. Carl then gave a rundown on the proposed weekend activities.

5:00pm: Happy Hour had an unusual visitor, a very inquisitive peacock and quite a few very brightly coloured parrots.

A toast was made to Wendy and Jeff as they had “tied the knot” after being together for twenty years! Wendy passed around some lovely photos of the day and all agreed that it looked to be a great party, and it was “about time”!

Saturday 8th The morning saw about half of our members visit the Toodyay Visitors Centre and Connor’s Mill, with the other half declining due to inaccessibility of the Mill, or had been to this site previously. Following this, the majority of us met up upstairs at the Toodyay Bakery for coffee and refreshments (well worth the visit). After morning tea we moved a bit further out to the Old Newcastle Gaol and Police Stables, which provided an interesting insight into the old town of Newcastle as Toodyay was once named.

The afternoon activity was a visit to Toffee Woods Alpacas where we were treated to a guided tour of the property and an in-depth insight into alpacas fleece, behaviours (including mating and spitting) and the alpaca industry in WA. The owner Mel and her helper presented an extremely interesting commentary revealing their passion for these lovely animals.

A ‘cuppa’ was provided and some chairs for those who brought their picnic lunch.

On the way back to the caravan park, some stopped off in the town as the Christmas Shop was open to catch the passing crowd and it certainly was well worth a visit. Quite the largest Christmas Shop I have ever seen. Others also stopped off at an antique and giftware shop which also proved quite interesting.

Happy Hour saw every one recapping on their day and a few happy fellows continued on to sample some unique fortifieds.

The weather remained lovely the whole weekend and most left by 10 am on Sunday morning for a leisurely drive home.

Many thanks to David & Robyn for their write-up and photos!

There was no actual report submitted as our Newsletter Team were unable to attend the Rally. As Len was also unable to attend he nominated our resident “very social wine and liqueur professor”, Ric to lead the activities for the weekend. Our thanks go to Ric for volunteering to put together a program of activities. Highlights were:-

Saturday 6th 9:00am and a visit was planned to the Old Railway Station, which included an Arts and Craft display and shop especially open for us. Built in 1889, the building is heritage listed. This was followed by morning tea at the Brookton Deli.

11:30am Everyone drove out to Boyagin Rock for a picnic lunch. For the energetic there were some nice walks.

Happy Hour was followed by an evening get together at the Pingelly Pub, as there was no pub open in Brookton.
