Mission Intentions: Message 2Sermon Outline: Creating faith pathways

Topic: Mission Intention 2: Creating faith pathways

Main Point: We share the love of Jesus by creating faith pathways

Intended Response: Share your faith with someone this week

IntroductionThe most important message in the world is that God sent His one and only Son for us. But who is that message for? How do we share the gospel with others? What is the substance of our gospel message? How do we graciously share the Good News of Jesus and grow in faith together?

A. An inclusive message The gospel is practical (Lk 8:35-39, James 2:17) The gospel is for everyone (Jn 3:16) The gospel is powerful (Acts 2:38-9)

Point Two: The gospel is proclaimed in both deeds and in words

B. An incarnational message God left heaven to be with people (Phil 2:6-7) God spoke a message and became a message (Jn 1:14) God calls us to practically show the gospel as well as preach it (Matt 5:13-16)

Point One: We graciously share the Good News with others

C. A clear message There is only one way humanity can be saved (Acts 4:12, John 10:10) The Holy Spirit helps us share our faith (Acts 1:8, 4:31) Salvation is only a prayer away (Rom 10:9-11, Jn 11:25)

Point Three: Jesus is the only means of salvation

Teaching Illustrations and props:We have included a four step model that you can give out to every person in your Corps so they can 1) follow along with in the sermon, 2) keep a copy with them and refer to when sharing their faith with others. You may also want to include a role play in this message to demonstrate how to verbally share your faith. This can be done through use of story (how you came to faith), through testimony (how God answered a prayer, or through experience (an encounter with the Holy Spirit and how that changed you).

Mission Intentions: Message 2Devotional: Creating faith pathways

One more seat at the table When Matthew met Jesus it must have been a powerful conversation, for within a short amount of time Matthew had left his accounting profession to become a minister-in-training, started travelling the countryside as a preacher, and eventually became a world-class writer. Encounters with Jesus will do that – they change us.

But Matthew didn’t become self-focused. After his conversation with Jesus he immediately hosted a dinner party for all of his work colleagues to come and meet the man that changed his world, we read…

Matthew 9:9-13As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.

When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

At this dinner party, both Jesus and Matthew modelled something really great for us to consider when we want to share our faith. Matthew modelled that sharing our faith can be as simple as sharing a meal with others. We don’t need to stand on street corners yelling out to strangers or withdraw from society in order to show how holy we are – we can simply invite friends round for a meal and talk about Jesus.

In this story, Jesus wasn’t put off by people’s career choices or immoral behaviours – He was more than willing to be in the company of people who were considered sinners. Jesus modelled that God is happy to meet people where they are at. He is willing to step into their world in order that they might learn more about Him.

The Pharisees were shocked by this. For them, being proper and doing lots of good works was how one gained an audience with God. For Jesus, it isn’t about what we do that gets His attention, it’s who we are that does. I once heard a preacher sum up the difference between religion and Christianity. He said, “Religion is spelt D-O, whereas Christianity is spelt D-O-N-E”.

Group Questions: “Taking a holistic approach to the human condition that values spirituality”

Mission Intentions: Message 2Scriptures: Creating faith pathways

Lk 8:35-39The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well.

And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, “Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.”

So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Jam 2:17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

Jn 3:16For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Acts 2:38-9Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.

Phil 2:6-7Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Jn 1:14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Matt 5:13-6“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Acts 4:12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved."

Jn 10:10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Rom 10:9-11That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, “whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”

Jn 11:25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;

Acts 1:8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Acts 4:31

After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Matt 9:9-13As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth.
