ANNUAL REPORT FROM CONGREGATION CHAIRMAN

Highlights:

1. Induction of, and welcome to, Rev Temukisa and her family.2. The wonderful support of “retired” ministers and lay teams who maintained the

ministry for over one year prior.3. Church fete – another successful event financially, socially and pastorally. Special

thanks to Lynda Smith and her team, plus the many spontaneous helpers. The benefits of friendly teamwork and community connection were quite evident throughout.

4. Property Team’s good work. Church roof repairs, spout cleaning, painting, window cleaning, grounds improvement and maintenance, working bees. More help is always welcome.

The not so good news relates to the declining numbers as we age and seem to be less able to compete with the many counter attractions on Sundays. In this context I pay tribute to our dedicated people who maintain Worship @ 9, the 10.45 service, Friday School, mainly music, Messy Church and the other pastoral activities to help make the Church relevant in the community.

Finally, our particular thanks go to all elders, office bearers, cleaners, organist, band, projectionists and choir, and all who serve on any of the church rosters, all for our collective benefit.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM CHURCH COUNCIL

Church Council’s role is to oversee the operation of the church on behalf of the congregation in line with the regulations set by Synod and Presbytery.

During the year we were represented at the 18-monthly Synod meeting/conference and at Presbytery meetings. We also are part of the Joint Co-ordinating Committee of the Linked

Congregations of Bellarine and have contributed to the running of the “parish” in a major way.

The highlight of the year was the call made to, and the acceptance by, Rev Temukisa Amituana’i-Vaeluaga. Our congregation has served God well during the year and especially during the period without a minister. We praise God for the people of the congregation who stepped up to undertake various roles and we are now enthused by Temukisa’s leadership, care and worship with us and we look forward to the years ahead.

Our congregation is made up of wonderful people who come to worship God regularly and who perform God’s mission work within our community in a variety of ways as reported in the various reports including in the annual report. Thank you to everyone for whatever task you do for us.

The success of mainly music, Messy Church, Friday School and Aged Care Chapel service give us a great variety of ways to worship God – because all do that in their different ways.

The financial report displays a better result than budgeted and this will need to be sustained in the years ahead to meet our ministry obligations. During the year a financial and process audit was initiated by Synod and our response met with no issues raised.

Our monthly loose change offering supported the Corio-Norlane numeracy and literacy program, an Indian church’s musical program and the Drysdale Welfare Support organisation. In addition we continued our monthly food donations to the Drysdale Food Bank, our annual harvest thanksgiving contribution to Cottage by the Sea, Operation Shoebox gifts and Christmas gifts to UnitingCare Concern.

Many improvements to the church property have been undertaken and we are grateful to those who have taken part in the working bees.

Ecumenically we have been involved with the World Day of Prayer, Walk of Witness and Advent Christmas Carols.

Our tasks for the year ahead:

To praise God in the community as best we can To continue to expand worship opportunities for congregation members and for the

wider community To have sufficient funds to operate effectively To maintain the property appropriately To have extra people undertake some of the congregation tasks.

God calls us all to be witnesses of the good work of Christ and the church. We praise God for the achievements, past and on-going, of the Drysdale Uniting Church.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM UNITING CHURCH ADULT FELLOWSHIP (UCAF)

Ten meetings were held in 2016. Attendance numbers ranged between 5 and 12.

The year commenced with a Commitment Service. Easter and Christmas services were held, using material provided by the Network Magazine. Guest speakers were Rev Bob Thomas who spoke on American politics and Jonnie Mander who gave an interesting talk on her recent trip to Africa.

We continued to support the Sammy Stamp program.

Two members attended the Leopold UCAF birthday celebration. Three members attended the Spring gathering at Ocean Grove.

Together with St. Leonards UCAF we hosted the Combined Peninsula Christmas luncheon, with an attendance of 49. This was very successful due to the support we received.

Drysdale UCAF is still affiliated with Synod UCAF, but is conducted on an informal basis.

ANUUAL REPORT FROM MINISTER

I give thanks to God for the richness of his mercy that enables us to be a people of faith; people of hope; people who have been freed in the name of Christ to worship, witness, and serve all people in word and deed. It is Christ who nourishes, guides, affirms and encourages us along our journey in life; offering new possibilities and opportunities to live our life as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Robert Schnase book: “Just say YES: Unleashing people for Ministry” suggests that the church needs to “move from systems that control to systems that encourage”; leaders have to become more comfortable with risk. Wise leaders say YES, even knowing the idea may not work or that someone will criticize the decision.

In the context of rapid changes with all the ministry and mission challenges and possibilities; permission giving – saying YES may be risky, but knowing that the Spirit of God is moving where it requires, offers new hope and possibilities to leap out in faith.

October 2016 marked a new and exciting beginning in our journey as people of God; where worship and hospitality is offered and received through the ministries and mission outreach programs. We continue to celebrate our diversity as Linked-Congregations and explore

ways of strengthening our unity in Christ, as well as nurturing and sustaining the congregations in their engagement with the wider community.

Some highlights:

(a) Ministries: Thank you for the diversity of ministries that nurture, sustain, and strengthen the people within and beyond the congregations.

(b) Mission Outreach: Thank you for the amazing, innovative, and faith nurturing activities and programs offering hope and blessings to the communities that participate in them.

(c) Ecumenical: Thank you to those who engage and serve in many ecumenical activities: including the Portarlington Community Carols and the Drysdale Carols at Woolworth’s precinct.

(d) Ministers Network: It has been a privilege to be part of this network where collegiality is fostered and nurtured; and missional areas are explored and prayerfully discerned.

Thank you to all for your support, love and faithfulness in the ministry and mission of Christ in our communities and beyond. May you continue to be a blessing to others.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM GROWING & LEARNING TEAM

Our small committee of three decided to wait until the appointment of our new minister before seeking new members. We will now be seeking a few new members to bring new ideas to the team during 2017.

However we continued to meet and some bible studies were held during the year. Our Lenten and Advent studies, although not attended by a lot of people, were most interesting, and thanks go to Ken Handley for the research and preparation he put into them. Our Advent study on key figures of the Christmas story raised some interesting discussion points.

The mainly music program continued to be very popular throughout the year, although during term 3 it was necessary to reduce the sessions to once fortnightly for each group due to lack of volunteers. Two of our key team members left us at the end of 2016 and so we continue to pray for more volunteers to come forward.

The Friday School group met weekly with a core group of seven families, and an average attendance of six families. The first term was spent on learning about Easter, and the fourth term was spent on Christmas, with the children each making a Nativity scene to take home.

The KYB group met each Monday morning with Lynda hosting at her home, and Pat Handley hosting when Lynda was not available.

The Growing and Learning team continue to look for ways to extend the teaching of the Good News to others, and this seems to be working successfully among the younger people in our community via mainly music and Friday School. The team members of these groups are grateful for the support of the Church Council and Congregation, through both physical assistance, and through prayer.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM PASTORAL TEAM

The Pastoral Care Team met together four times in 2016, as we look at ways to support each other and provide a link to members of our congregation and church and also to learn and grown individually in our faith. Each member of the congregation is allocated a Pastoral Carer; I hope you know who your pastoral carer is, and feel comfortable to contact them if you have any issues of concern or just need someone to talk to. We also provide Home Communion, on communion days to anyone who would like it.

This year we have created a ‘New Generation Roll’, with details of families who attend Messy Church and Friday School. With permission, these families have a member of our congregation allocated to pray for them and we send them details of events of the church.

Operating without an appointed Minister for much of the year has meant more work for our team and I thank them for their commitment. This year there was a lot of illness in our congregation and we lost many dear members, however we were blessed to have the support of Rev Margaret Manning who took on the role of Minister when needed for Pastoral Care matters and a special thank you also to Rev Bob Stevenson for also providing much needed support in times of crisis. Rev Temukisa’s arrival was very welcome and she got straight in with some hospital visits and funerals and has bookings for two weddings in 2017.

I also acknowledge that our congregation is very good at supporting each other and thank everyone for that; it does make our role easier to know that we all look out for each other.

Other activities organised by the Pastoral Care Team in 2016 were:

Our “Guess Who’s Coming to High Tea’ held in April. We had 6 families hosting and 49 guests and 10 apologies.

Reintroduction of Coffee and Chat, now held weekly at the Zoo Café from 10.30 am, everyone welcome, members of our congregation, friends and neighbours. An average of 10 people attend each week, but not the same 10, as you can come along when it suits you.

New Year Eve’s games night – organised by Wayne with 14 attending and enjoying fun and fellowship.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM PROPERTY TEAM

The property committee would like to thank everyone who helped to maintain the church and property.

We would like to thank all people who turned up at our quarterly working bees.

A big thank you to Phil Spivey who organised a team of helpers (Ian Cook, Chris Olsen, Norm Cheale, Bruce Van Every, and Ian McLaverty).

This team worked on the maintenance of the church and hall.

1. Hall. Cleaning iron girders, ceiling fans and high windows, changing burnt out light tubes with new ones. All done with the use of hired mobile scaffolding.

2. Church. Cleaning and painting windows, inside and outside and buttress on the north side. (scout hall)

3. Back verandah. Cleaning the roof and painting, cleaning and painting window of hall. Still on going.

The heater in the back foyer has a new face and grilles Thanks to Russell Butcher a past member who did this at his own cost.

To continue reaching out to the wider community through faith based worship and programs such as Messy Church, mainly music, Friday school, annual pilgrimage and annual retreat.

Fortnightly communal prayer and monthly prayer breakfast provides another avenue for enriching our faith as well as fellowship with other church members.

Reflecting on the year:

The Worship Team together with those leading worship has continued with assisting in ministry, however, the team has been uplifted since it welcomed the Rev. Temukisa. The number of lay teams has now reduced to five (with four W@9 and one 10.45) meaning there will be some W@9 lay teams leading 10.45 worship. The Worship Team expresses it gratitude to all who share or who have shared ministry in a lay team. We continue to praise God for the wonderful and gifted people who so willingly give of themselves in the service of our Lord.
