Welcome and Announcements

*Call To WorshipPsalm 104, selected verses

One:Let my whole being bless the LORD!

All:LORD my God, how fantastic you are!You are clothed in glory and grandeur

One:You established the earth on its foundations so that it will never ever fall.

All:You put gushing springs into dry riverbeds. They flow between the mountains, providing water for every wild animal.

One:O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all;

All:May our meditation be pleasing, for we rejoice in the Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!

*Hymn #501Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

1 Guide me, O thou great Jehovah,pilgrim through this barren land;I am weak, but thou art mighty--hold me with thy powerful hand:Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven,feed me till I want no more,(want no more,)feed me till I want no more.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,whence the healing stream doth flow;let the fire and cloudy pillarlead me all my journey through:Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,be thou still my strength and shield,(strength and shield,)be thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,bid my anxious fears subside;bear me through the swelling current,land me safe on Canaans side:Songs of praises, songs of praisesI will ever give to thee,(give to thee,)I will ever give to thee.

*Call To Confession

*Prayer of Confession (unison)

God of creation,

you hold the world in the palm of your hand,

and have made abundant provision for all your creatures.

Yet still we worry that we might not have enough.

Instead of trusting in Your abundance,

we become anxious about scarcity.

Taking more than our share,

we ask why You allow for poverty and starvation in the world.

Forgive us, O God

when we do not trust Your promise of abundant life;

when we do not thank You for the provisions we receive;

when we look out for our self, but not for others;

when we blame you for the suffering

caused by our own anxieties.

Restore our trust, gratitude, compassion, and humility,

that we may inherit the promise and bear its fruit in the world.

In Jesus name, and for his sake we pray

[silent prayer and personal confession]

*Declaration of Forgiveness and Peace

One: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

All:Thanks be to God!

One:The Peace of Christ be with you

All:And also with you.

[we share signs of Christs peace with one another]

*Gloria PatriGlory be to the Father, And to the Son,

and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be

World without end. Amen. Amen.

*Hymn #451Be Still, My Soul

1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side!Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;leave to your God to order and provide--in every change he faithful will remain.Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friendthrough thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul: your God will undertaketo guide the future as he has the past;your hope, your confidence let nothing shake--all now mysterious shall be bright at last.Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still knowhis voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul: The hour is hastening onwhen we shall be forever with the Lord,when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,sorrow forgot, loves purest joys restored.Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past,all safe and blessd we shall meet at last.

*Affirmation of Faith: The Heidelberg Catechism (1562 AD) (unison)

Q. 26.What do you believe when you say: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth?

A.That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth with all that is in them, who also upholds and governs them by his eternal counsel and providence, is for the sake of Christ his Son my God and my Father. I trust in him so completely that I have no doubt that he will provide me with all things necessary for body and soul. Moreover, whatever evil [comes]1 upon me in this troubled life he will turn to my good, for he is able to do it, being almighty God, and is determined to do it, being a faithful Father.

Q. 27.What do you understand by the providence of God?

A.The almighty and ever-present power of God whereby he still upholds, as it were by his own hand, heaven and earth together with all creatures, and rules in such a way that leaves and grass, rain and drought, fruitful and unfruitful years, food and drink, health and sickness, riches and poverty, and everything else, come to us not by chance but by his fatherly hand.

Q. 28.What advantage comes from acknowledging Gods creation and providence?

A.We learn that we are to be patient in adversity, grateful in the midst of blessing, and to trust our faithful God and Father for the future, assured that no creature shall separate us from his love, since all creatures are so completely in his hand that without his will they cannot even move.

1 the original language of Heidelberg is, whatever evil He [God] sends upon me. Most modern theologians reject the notion that God sends evil upon creation. In the book of Job, it is not God, but Satan who oppresses the righteous Job (see Job 1). A better expression of Gods providence is that God permits evil by insisting upon the freedom of creation, but is never the source of evil.

Prayers of The People

One: O, risen God,

All:fill us with your power.

The Lords Prayer (unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
