Page 2: ccadana7.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewYour goal is to design a three-dimensional monument to honor your chosen specific historical period, place, event, group or person (examples:

1. Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Honors: The 58,000 soldiers who died while fighting for democracy; the women who served; the ethnic diversity of troops and the soldiers who survived, but who were forever changed as a result of their experiences at war.

2. 9/11 Memorial

Honors: The National September 11th Memorial is a tribute to the remembrance and honor of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. These occurred at the World Trade Centers, near Shanksville, PA., and the Pentagon. This also honors the six people who were killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

The memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood.

The names of every person who dies in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.

3. Air Force Memorial

Honors: The 54,000 airmen who have been killed in action and the service and sacrifices of all of the men and women in the United States Air Force who have embodied the three core values of the USAF-“Integrity first, service before self and excellence in all that we do.”

Monument Project!What is your goal?

Page 4: ccadana7.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewYour goal is to design a three-dimensional monument to honor your chosen specific historical period, place, event, group or person (examples:

Your goal is to design a three-dimensional monument to honor your chosen specific historical period, place, event, group or person (examples: Civil Rights Movement, Holocaust, 9-11, etc.). You will then design this monument in such a way that it persuades a community to actually build the monument. You will be constructing a scale replica of the monument and writing a short paper that convinces community leaders to build your monument.

How will you monument be graded? Your design and monument will be graded based on how well you meet the following requirements:

At least three different 3-D shapes must be used (more may be used for design purposes, if necessary)

o Choices of shapes are: Cube Rectangular Prism Triangular Prism Triangular Pyramid Square Pyramid Cylinder Cone

All of the shapes must be constructed out of card stock by the group. The exact volume of all shapes must be calculated. The exact surface area of all shapes must be calculated. The exact cost of all shapes must be calculated based on (1) the

materials used and (2) the surface area of the shape. You will have a total budget of $5,000 to spend on materials (more on this later!)

A net for all shapes must be drawn on grid paper with correct side lengths.

Monument appearance counts: neatness, decoration, measurement, clean edges!

A written description explaining the reasons for choosing to honor this historical place, event, group, or person. Included in this description should be an explanation of why your groups chose to use the specific shapes and materials. The group should attempt to persuade the reader/audience to actually build this monument.

How well your group worked together from teacher observations and self-assessment.

All packets and work turned in and completely filled out. Attendance is important. This is a group project. In order for your team

to succeed, you must work together.

You should use these reasons in the written description of your monument. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3. List three ideas for 3-D shapes that you might use and the possible materials you will use to construct each shape (gold, copper, steel, brick, limestone and granite): __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Discuss design ideas as a group. Draw two rough sketches of different ideas for your design:
