Course Summary

The Gospel of Mark is widely believed to be the first of many Gospels to have been written in the ancient world. Its presentation of Christ is, therefore, a careful and tremendously valuable look at the life of Jesus Messiah. Firmly linked to the OT, a faithful look at the message of the Gospel of Mark makes it impossible to dismiss Jesus as “ordinary” in any way. A semester-long study of the book will serve to help us begin to develop appreciation for and understanding of the book, a love for the God behind it all, and a Biblical understanding of the person & work of Jesus, the Messiah.

Course Objectives

1. To move toward a better understanding of the Gospel of Mark in its cultural, historical and literary context.

2. To move toward a better understanding of the Gospel of Mark in relationship to the rest of the New Testament.

3. To move toward a better understanding of the Gospel of Mark in relationship to the books of the Old Testament

4. To move toward a better understanding of the implications of Jesus’ announcement of the Kingdom of God.

5. To demonstrate the staggering repercussions of the claims of Christ on lives yesterday, today & forever.

Course Grading

1. Study Guides (Quizzes) 20%

These will be assigned once a week covering one chapter of Mark’s Gospel at a time. There will be approximately 50 questions per week.

Page 3: stephengrwebster.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewyet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. Mark 1:1-13 - NAS. B. 1The beginning of the gospel

3GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

Your grade for each Study Guide will be given based on your results from a “Study Guide Quiz” that will be administered from each Study Guide. This will consist of approximately 15-20 Multiple Choice Questions from the Study Guide itself. Each and every Study Guide question should be answered, and will be covered in class.

2. Quizzes (Tests) 50%

These will be given at the end of each chapter of Mark. The quizzes will contain a short matching section, followed by 8-10 short answer questions, followed by a memory verse in connection with the attached schedule.

3. Memory Verses 10%

During the course of the semester we will be memorizing two important chapters from the OT prophet Isaiah – Isaiah 35 and 53. These chapters highlight the divine power and sacrificial service of Jesus. Isaiah 53 will be administered as a full chapter test during the last two weeks of the semester. The memory verse schedule is published in the course calendar at the end of this syllabus. The verses will be given week by week on available days in the schedule. All memory verses will be studied in the ESV.

4. Semester Exam 20%

This is a cumulative exam, given at the end of the semester. The exam will be taken from the information covered during the semester. Questions will be taken from the quizzes, notes and worksheets. There will be no memory verses.

The Ransomed Shall Return1 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;     the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;2  it shall blossom abundantly     and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,      the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD,      the majesty of our God.

3 Strengthen the weak hands,     and make firm the feeble knees.4 Say to those who have an anxious heart,      “Be strong; fear not!Behold, your God     will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God.     He will come and save you.”

7GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,     and the ears of the deaf unstopped;6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer,     and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.For waters break forth in the wilderness,     and streams in the desert;7 the burning sand shall become a pool,      and the thirsty ground springs of water;in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,     the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

8 And a highway shall be there,     and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;the unclean shall not pass over it.       It shall belong to those who walk on the way;     even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.9 No lion shall be there,     nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;they shall not be found there,     but the redeemed shall walk there.10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return     and come to Zion with singing;everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;     they shall obtain gladness and joy,     and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

Isaiah 53 (ESV)1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?    And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,    and like a root out of dry ground;he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,    and no beauty that we should desire him.3 He was despised and rejected by men;    a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;and as one from whom men hide their faces    he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs    and carried our sorrows;yet we esteemed him stricken,    smitten by God, and afflicted.5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;    he was crushed for our iniquities;upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,    and with his wounds we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray;    we have turned—every one—to his own way;

and the LORD has laid on him    the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,    yet he opened not his mouth;like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,    so he opened not his mouth.8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;    and as for his generation, who consideredthat he was cut off out of the land of the living,    stricken for the transgression of my people?9 And they made his grave with the wicked    and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence,    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him;    he has put him to grief;when his soul makes an offering for guilt,    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,    make many to be accounted righteous,    and he shall bear their iniquities.12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death    and was numbered with the transgressors;yet he bore the sin of many,    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Mark 1:1-13 - NASB

1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, (A)the Son of God.

       2(B)As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:         "(C)BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU,         WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;

3(D)THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,         'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,         MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.'"     4John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness [a](E)preaching a baptism of repentance for the (F)forgiveness of sins.

5And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being

baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

6John was clothed with camel's hair and wore (G)a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey.

7And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals.

8"I baptized you [b]with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

9GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

9(H)In those days Jesus (I)came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

       10Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;

11and a voice came out of the heavens: "(J)You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."

12(K)Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.

13And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by (L)Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.

Mark 1:1-13 - NIV

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a]

2It is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you,       who will prepare your way”[b]– 3“a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,       make straight paths for him.’ ”[c] 4And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And this was his message: “After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down

and untie. 8I baptize you with[d] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus

9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

12At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, 13and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Mark 1:14-25

Jesus Preaches in Galilee - NASB

14   (13) Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, (14) preaching the gospel of God, 15   and saying, "(15) The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; (16) repent and believe in the gospel." 16   (17) As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon

and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17   And Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men." 18   Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19   Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20   Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him. 21   (18) They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath (19)

He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22   (20) They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23   Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24   saying, "(21) What business do we have with each other, Jesus [3] of (22) Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are--(23)

the Holy One of God!" 25   And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"

Mark 1:14-25

The Calling of the First Disciples - NIV

14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!" 16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 18At once they left their nets and followed him. 19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit

21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil[5] spirit cried out, 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" 25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"

11GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

Mark 1:26-34 - NASB

26   Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27   They were all (24) amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him." 28   Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.

Crowds Healed

29   (25) And immediately after they came (26) out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30   Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and they spoke to Jesus about her. 31   And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she [4] waited on them. 32   (27) When evening came, (28) after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were (29) demon-possessed. 33   And the whole (30) city had gathered at the door.

34   And He (31) healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

Mark 1:26-34 - NIV

26The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. 32That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered at the door, 34and

Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Mark 1:35-45 (NASB)

35(A)In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and (B)was praying there.

       36Simon and his companions searched for Him;

37they found Him, and said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."

38He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for."

39(C)And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.

40(D)And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and (E)falling on his knees before Him, and saying, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."

41Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed."

42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,

44and He said to him, "(F)See that you say nothing to anyone; but (G)go, show yourself to the priest and (H)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

45But he went out and began to (I)proclaim it freely and to (J)spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but [a]stayed out in unpopulated areas; and (K)they were coming to Him from everywhere.

Mark 1:35-45 (NIV)

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place

35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37and when they found him, they

exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else–to the nearby villages–so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

A Man With Leprosy

40A man with leprosy[a] came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”

42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.

43Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44“See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

45Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

Mark 2:1-14 – NASB

The Paralytic Healed

1   When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. 2   And (1) many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. 3   (2) And they came, bringing to Him a (3) paralytic, carried by four men. 4   Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they (4) removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the (5) paralytic was lying. 5   And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, "[1] Son, (6) your sins are forgiven." 6   But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7   "Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; (7) who can forgive sins but God alone?" 8   Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, "Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? 9   "Which is easier, to say to the (8) paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven'; or to say, 'Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk'? 10   "But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--He said to the paralytic, 11   "I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home." 12   And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and (9) were glorifying God, saying, "(10) We have never seen anything like this." 13   And He went out again by the seashore; and (11) all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.

Levi (Matthew) Called

14   (12) As He passed by, He saw (13) Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth,

and He said to him, "(14) Follow Me!" And he got up and followed Him.

Mark 2:1-14 - NIV

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

1A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." 6Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7"Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

8Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, "Why are you thinking these things? 9Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? 10But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins . . . ." He said to the paralytic, 11"I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." 12He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have never seen anything like this!"

The Calling of Levi

13Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

Mark 2:15-28 - NASB15   And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. 16   When (1) the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, "(2) Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?" 17   And hearing this, Jesus said to them, "(3) It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." 18   (4) John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to Him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?" 19   And Jesus said to them, "While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with

them, they cannot fast. 20   "But the (5) days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21   "No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. 22   "No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins."

23   (6) And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while (7) picking the heads of grain. 24   The Pharisees were saying to Him, "Look, (8) why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" 25   And He said to them, "Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26   how he entered the house of God in the time of (9) Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which (10) is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?" 27   Jesus said to them, "(11) The Sabbath was made for man, and (12) not man for the Sabbath. 28   "So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Mark 2:15-28 - NIV15While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked

his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

18Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, "How is it that John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?" 19Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast. 21"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins."

Lord of the Sabbath

23One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" 25He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." 27Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

16GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

Mark 3:1-19 - NASB1   (1) He (2) entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. 2   (3) They were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, (4) so that they might accuse Him. 3   He said to the man with the withered hand, "Get up and come forward!" 4   And He said to them, "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. 5   After (5) looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6   The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the (6) Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. 7   (7) Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and (8) a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea, 8   and from Jerusalem, and from (9) Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of (10) Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard of all that He was doing and came to Him. 9   (11) And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him; 10   for He had (12) healed many, with the result that all those who had (13) afflictions pressed around Him in order to (14) touch Him. 11   Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are (15) the Son of God!" 12   And He (16) earnestly warned them not to tell who He was.

The Twelve Are Chosen

13   And He went up on (17) the mountain and (18) summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him. 14   And He appointed twelve, so that they would be with Him and that He could send them out to preach,

15   and to have authority to cast out the demons. 16   And He appointed the twelve: (19) Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), 17   and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder"); 18   and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; 19   and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

Mark 3:1-19 - NIV1Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." 4Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?" But they remained silent. 5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

Crowds Follow Jesus

7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8When they heard all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11Whenever the evil[1] spirits saw him, they fell down before him and

cried out, "You are the Son of God." 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell who he was.

The Appointing of the Twelve Apostles

13Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve--designating them apostles[2] --that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15and to have authority to drive out demons. 16These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder); 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Mark 3:20-35 - NAS

20   And He came [1] (20) home, and the (21) crowd gathered again, (22) to such an extent that they could not even eat a meal. 21   When (23) His own [2] people heard of this, they went out to take custody of Him; for they were saying, "(24) He has lost His senses." 22   The scribes who came down (25) from Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by (26) Beelzebul," and "(27) He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons." 23   (28) And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in (29) parables, "How can (30) Satan cast out Satan?

24   "If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25   "If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26   "If (31) Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished! 27   "(32) But no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house. 28   "(33) Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29   but (34) whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"-- 30   because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit." 31   (35) Then His mother and His brothers arrived, and standing outside they sent word to Him and called Him. 32   A crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him, "Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are outside looking for You." 33   Answering them, He said, "Who are My mother and My brothers?" 34   Looking about at those who were sitting around Him, He said, "(36) Behold My mother and My brothers! 35   "For whoever (37) does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother."

Mark 3:20-35 - NIV

Jesus and Beelzebub

20Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to

eat. 21When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind." 22And the teachers of the law who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub [3] ! By the prince of demons he is driving out demons." 23So Jesus called them and spoke to them in parables: "How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. 27In fact, no one can enter a strong man's house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can rob his house. 28I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." 30He said this because they were saying, "He has an evil spirit."

Jesus' Mother and Brothers

31Then Jesus' mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you." 33"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. 34Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 35Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother."

Mark 4:1-20 (NASB)

1(A)He began to teach again (B)by the sea And such a very large crowd gathered to Him that (C)He got into a boat in the sea and sat down; and the whole crowd was by the sea on the land.        2And He was teaching them many things in (D)parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,        3"Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up.     5"Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil.     6"And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.        7"Other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it, and it yielded no crop.        8"Other seeds fell into the good soil, and as they grew up and increased, they yielded a crop and produced thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."        9And He was saying, "(E)He who has ears to hear, let him hear."        10As soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables.        11And He was saying to them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but (F)those who are outside get everything (G)in parables,        12so that (H)WHILE SEEING, THEY MAY SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE, AND WHILE HEARING, THEY MAY HEAR AND NOT UNDERSTAND, OTHERWISE THEY MIGHT RETURN AND BE FORGIVEN."     13(I)And He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?        14"The sower sows the word.        15"These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately (J)Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them. 16"In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; 17and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall

away.        18"And others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones who have heard the word, 19but the worries of (K)the [a]world, and the (L)deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20"And those are the ones on whom seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it and (M)bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold."

Mark 4:1-20 (NIV)

The Parable of the Sower

1Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge. 2He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3“Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times.”

9Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

10When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. 11He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in

parables 12so that, “ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,       and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”

13Then Jesus said to them, “Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14The farmer sows the word. 15Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop–thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.”

Mark 4:21-34 - NAS

21   And He was saying to them, "(14) A lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it, or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand? 22   "(15) For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light. 23   "(16) If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." 24   And He was saying to them, "Take care what you listen to. (17) By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. 25   "(18) For whoever has, to him more

shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him."

Parable of the Seed

26   And He was saying, "The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; 27   and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows--how, he himself does not know. 28   "The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. 29   "But when the crop permits, he immediately (19) puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

Parable of the Mustard Seed

30   (20) And He said, "How shall we [2] (21)

picture the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it? 31   "It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, 32   yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that (22) THE BIRDS OF THE [3] AIR can NEST UNDER ITS SHADE." 33   With many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to hear it; 34   and He did not speak to them (23) without a parable; but He was (24) explaining everything privately to His own disciples.

Mark 4:21-34 - NIV

A Lamp on a Stand

21He said to them, "Do you bring in a

lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on its stand? 22For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. 23If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." 24"Consider carefully what you hear," he continued. "With the measure you use, it will be measured to you--and even more. 25Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him."

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come."

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade." 33With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34He did not say anything to them without using a

parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

Mark 4:35 – 5:10 - NAS

Jesus Stills the Sea

35   (1) On that day, when evening came, He said to them, "Let us go over to the other side." 36   Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them (2) in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37   And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38   Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" 39   And He got up and (3) rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Hush, be still." And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40   And He said to them, "Why are you afraid? (4) Do you still have no faith?" 41   They became very much afraid and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?"

Mark 5

The Gerasene Demoniac

1   (5) They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. 2   When He got out of (6) the boat, immediately a man from the tombs (7) with an unclean spirit met Him, 3   and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain; 4   because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles

broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5   Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones. 6   Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him; 7   and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "(8) What business do we have with each other, Jesus, (9) Son of (10) the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!" 8   For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!" 9   And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is (11) Legion; for we are many." 10   And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

Mark 4:35 – 5:10 - NIV

Jesus Calms the Storm

35That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." 36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

The Healing of a Demon-possessed Man

22GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

1They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[1] 2When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil[2] spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. 4For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. 6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!" 8For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!" 9Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" 10"My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

Mark 5:11-24 - NAS11   Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain. 12   The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them." 13   Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea. 14   Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the

country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened. 15   They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been (8) demon-possessed sitting down, (9) clothed and (10) in his right mind, the very man who had had the "(11) legion"; and they became frightened. 16   Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the (12) demon-possessed man, and all about the swine. 17   And they began to (13) implore Him to leave their region. 18   (14) As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been (15) demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him. 19   And He did not let him, but He said to him, "(16) Go home to your people and report to them [1] what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you." 20   And he went away and began to (17)

proclaim in (18) Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.

Miracles and Healing

21   (19) When Jesus had crossed over again in (20) the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed (21) by the seashore. 22   (22) One of (23) the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet 23   and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and (24) lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live." 24   And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.

Mark 5:11-24 – NIV

23GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

11A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." 13He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. 14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well. 17Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[3] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

A Dead Girl and a Sick Woman

21When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet 23and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live." 24So Jesus went with him.

25A large crowd followed and pressed around him.

Mark 5:25-43 - NAS25   A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26   and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse-- 27   after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28   For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well." 29   Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her (1) affliction. 30   Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that (2) the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?" 31   And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'" 32   And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33   But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34   And He said to her, "Daughter, (3) your faith has made you well; (4) go in peace and be healed of your (5) affliction." 35   While He was still speaking, they came from the house of the (6) synagogue official, saying, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?" 36   But Jesus, overhearing what was being spoken, said to the (7) synagogue official, "(8) Do not be afraid any longer, only believe."

24GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

37   And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except (9) Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38   They came to the house of the (10) synagogue official; and He saw a commotion, and people loudly weeping and wailing. 39   And entering in, He said to them, "Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is asleep." 40   They began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He took along the child's father and mother and His own companions, and entered the room where the child was. 41   Taking the child by the hand, He said to her, "Talitha kum!" (which translated means, "Little girl, (11) I say to you, get up!"). 42   Immediately the girl got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. 43   And He (12) gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that something should be given her to eat.

Mark 5:25-43 - NIV25A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed." 29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" 31"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' " 32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33Then the woman, knowing

what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." 35While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?" 36Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe." 37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep." 40But they laughed at him. 41After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!" ). 42Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Teaching at Nazareth

1   (1) Jesus went out from there and came into (2) His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.

25GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

2   When the Sabbath came, He began (3) to teach in the synagogue; and the (4) many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? 3   "Is not this (5) the carpenter, (6) the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not (7) His sisters here with us?" And they took (8) offense at Him. 4   Jesus said to them, "(9) A prophet is not without honor except in (10) his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household." 5   And He could do no miracle there except that He (11) laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6   And He wondered at their unbelief. (12) And He was going around the villages teaching.

The Twelve Sent Out

7   (13) And (14) He summoned the twelve and began to send them out (15) in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits; 8   (16) and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff--no bread, no bag, no money in their belt-- 9   but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two [1] tunics." 10   And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town. 11   "Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, (17) shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them." 12   (18) They went out and preached that men should repent. 13   And they were casting out many demons and (19) were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.

Mark 6:1-13 - NIV

A Prophet Without Honor

1Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. 3"Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph,[1] Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. 4Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

7Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil[2] spirits. 8These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9Wear sandals but not an extra tunic. 10Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."

John's Fate Recalled

14   (20) And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "(21) John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him." 15   But others were saying, "He is (22) Elijah." And others were saying, "He is (23) a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." 16   But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!" 17   For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of (24) Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her. 18   For John had been saying to Herod, "(25)

It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 19   (26) Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so; 20   for (27) Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him. 21   A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday (28) gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men (29) of Galilee; 22   and when the daughter of (30) Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you

want and I will give it to you." 23   And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to (31) half of my kingdom." 24   And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." 25   Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26   And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her. 27   Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison, 28   and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. 29   When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.

John the Baptist Beheaded

14King Herod heard about this, for Jesus' name had become well known. Some were saying,[3] "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him." 15Others said, "He is Elijah." And still others claimed, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago." 16But when Herod heard this, he said, "John, the man I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!" 17For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom he had married. 18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to

have your brother's wife." 19So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[4] ; yet he liked to listen to him. 21Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests. 23The king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." And he promised her with an oath, "Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom." 24She went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she answered. 25At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter." 26The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29On hearing of this, John's disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Mark 6:30-44 - NAS

30 The apostles *gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He *said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) 32 They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.Five Thousand Fed33 The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.34 When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things. 35 When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and it is already quite late; 36 send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37 But He answered them, “You give them something to eat!” And they *said to Him, “Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?” 38 And He *said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go look!” And when they found out, they *said, “Five, and two fish.” 39 And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass. 40 They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. 41 And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?”38 “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.”

When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.”39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.

Jesus Walks on the Water

45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away. 46 After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.47 When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land. 48 Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He *came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out; 50 for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and *said to them, “Take courage; it is

I, do not be afraid.” 51 Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, 52 for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.

Healing at Gennesaret

53 When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore. 54 When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, 55 and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was. 56 Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.

Jesus Walks on the Water

45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was

alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.53 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus.55 They ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

Followers of Tradition

1(A)The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem,    2and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)impure hands, that is, unwashed.    3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)traditions of the elders;    4and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.)    5The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the (F)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (G)impure hands?"    6And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:         '(H)THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,         BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.       7'(I)BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,         TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'    8"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the (J)tradition of men."    9He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (K)tradition.    10"For Moses said, '(L)HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, '(M)HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH'; 11but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is (N)Corban (that is to say, [a]given to God),' 12you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;    13thus invalidating the word of God by your (O)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that."    14After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:    15there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.

16["[b]If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."]

17When he had left the crowd and entered (P)the house, (Q)His disciples questioned Him about the parable.    18And He said to them, "Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19because it does not go into his heart, but into

his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He declared (R)all foods (S)clean.)    20And He was saying, "(T)That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.    21"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, (U)envy, slander, pride and foolishness.    23"All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man."

Mark 7:1-23 - NIV

Clean and Unclean

1The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and 2saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were “unclean,” that is, unwashed. 3(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])

5So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with ‘unclean’ hands?”

6He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “ ‘These people honor me with their lips,       but their hearts are far from me. 7They worship me in vain;       their teachings are but rules taught by men.’[b] 8You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.”

9And he said to them: “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions! 10For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[d] and, ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must

be put to death.’[e] 11But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: ‘Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God), 12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

14Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15Nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean’ by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him ‘unclean.’ ”[f]

17After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18“Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean’? 19For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”)

20He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ 21For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’ ”

The Syrophoenician Woman

24(V)Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of (W)Tyre[c]. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; yet He could not escape notice.

25But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.

26Now the woman was a [d]Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

27And He was saying to her, "Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

28But she answered and said to Him, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children's crumbs."

29And He said to her, "Because of this answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter."

30And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the bed, the demon having left.

31(X)Again He went out from the region of (Y)Tyre, and came through Sidon to (Z)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of (AA)Decapolis.

32They brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they implored Him to (AB)lay His hand on him.

   33(AC)Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (AD)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;

34and looking up to heaven with a deep (AE)sigh, He said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"    35And his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was removed, and he began speaking plainly.    36And (AF)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they (AG)continued to proclaim it.

37They were utterly astonished, saying, "He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

The Faith of a Syrophoenician Woman

24Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[a] He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil[b] spirit came and fell at his feet. 26The woman was a Greek,

born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27“First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs.”

28“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.”

29Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

The Healing of a Deaf and Mute Man

31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.[c] 32There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man.

33After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue. 34He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means, “Be opened!” ). 35At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

36Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Mark 8:1-21 - NAS

Four Thousand Fed

1In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and said to them, 2"I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.  3"If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance."  4And His disciples answered Him, "Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?"  5And He was asking them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven."  6And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people. 7They also had a few small fish; and after He had blessed them, He ordered these to be served as well.  8And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces.  9About four thousand were there; and He sent them away.  10And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.  11The Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, to test Him.  12Sighing deeply in His spirit, He said, "Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." 13Leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.  14And they had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. 15And He was giving orders to them, saying, "Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."  16They began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread.  17And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet see or understand? Do you have a hardened heart?  18"HAVING EYES, DO YOU NOT SEE? AND HAVING EARS, DO YOU NOT HEAR? And do you not remember,  19when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?" They said to Him, "Twelve." 20"When I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of

Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

1During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 2“I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. 3If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.”

4His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”

5“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.    “Seven,” they replied.    6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so. 7They had a few small fish as well; he gave thanks for them also and told the disciples to distribute them. 8The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 9About four thousand men were present. And having sent them away, 10he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the region of Dalmanutha.    11The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeply and said, “Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it.” 13Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”    16They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”    17Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember? 19When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”    “Twelve,” they replied.    20“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”    They answered, “Seven.”    21He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Mark 8:22-38 (New American Standard Bible)

22And they came to (A) Bethsaida And they brought a blind man to Jesus and implored Him to (B) touch him.    23Taking the blind man by the hand, He (C)brought him out of the village; and after (D)spitting on his eyes and (E)laying His hands on him, He asked him, "Do you see anything?"    24And he looked up and said, "I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around."    25Then again He laid His hands on his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and began to see everything clearly. 26And He sent him to his home, saying, "Do not even enter (F)the village."

31(L) And He began to teach them that (M) the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.    32And He was stating the matter (N)

plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.    33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind Me, (O) Satan; for you are not setting your mind on [a] God’s interests, but man's."

34And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and (P)

take up his cross and follow Me.    35"For (Q) whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.

37"For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

38"For (R) whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, (S) the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He (T) comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

Mark 8:22-38 (New International Version)

22They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

24He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying, “Don't go into the village.[a]”

Peter's Confession of Christ

27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”

28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

29“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Christ.[b]”

30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels.”

Mark 7 Study Guide

1. From where did the Pharisees and some of the scribes come? (7:1)

A note on the word “Pharisee”:

,n  {phar-i-say-os}A sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In   addition to OT books the Pharisees recognised in oral tradition a   standard of belief and life. They sought for distinction and   praise by outward observance of external rites and by outward   forms of piety, and such as ceremonial washings, fastings, prayers, and alms giving; and, comparatively negligent of genuine   piety, they prided themselves on their fancied good works. They   held strenuously to a belief in the existence of good and evil   angels, and to the expectation of a Messiah; and they cherished   the hope that the dead, after a preliminary experience either of   reward or of penalty in Hades, would be recalled to life by him, and be requited each according to his individual deeds. In   opposition to the usurped dominion of the Herods and the rule of   the Romans, they stoutly upheld the theocracy and their country's   cause, and possessed great influence with the common people.   According to Josephus they numbered more than 6000. They were   bitter enemies of Jesus and his cause; and were in turn severely   rebuked by him for their avarice, ambition, hollow reliance on   outward works, and affection of piety in order to gain popularity.

A note on the word “scribe”:

Scribes examined the more difficult and subtle questions of the law; added to the Mosaic Law decisions of various kinds thought to elucidate its meaning and scope, and did this to the detriment of religion. Since the advice of men skilled in the law was needed in the examination in the causes and the solution of the difficult questions, they were enrolled in the Sanhedrin; and are mentioned in connection with the priests and elders of the people. Mark 9:1-13 (New American Standard Bible)

The Transfiguration

1And Jesus was saying to them, "(A)Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power."

2(B)Six days later, Jesus took with Him (C)Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them;    3and (D)His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.

5Peter said to Jesus, "(E)Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; (F)let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

6For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified.

7Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and (G)a voice came out of the cloud, "(H)This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!"

8All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

9(I)As they were coming down from the mountain, He (J)gave them orders not to

relate to anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose from the dead.

10They seized upon that statement, discussing with one another what rising from the dead meant.

11They asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the scribes say that (K)Elijah must come first?"

12And He said to them, "Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of (L)the Son of Man that (M)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

13"But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him."

Mark 9:1-13 (New International Version)

1And he said to them, “I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

The Transfiguration

66GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters–one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

7Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

11And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

12Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? 13But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

Mark 9:14-29 (New American Standard)

All Things Possible

14(A)When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.    15Immediately, when the entire crowd saw Him, they were (B)amazed and began running up to greet Him.    16And He asked them, "What are you discussing with them?"

17And one of the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute;    18and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it."    19And He answered them and said, "O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!"    20They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth.    21And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood.    22"It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!"    23And Jesus said to him, " 'If You can?' (C)All things are possible to him who believes." 24Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief." 25When Jesus saw that (D)a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again."    26After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!"    27But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and

he got up.    28When He came (E)into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not drive it out?"

29And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."

Mark 9:14-29 (New International Version)

The Healing of a Boy with an Evil Spirit

14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16“What are you arguing with them about?” he asked.

17A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19“O unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

21Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?”    “From childhood,” he answered. 22“It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”    23“ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.”    24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

25When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil[a]

spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”    26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, “He's dead.” 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.    28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn't we drive it out?”

29He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.[b]”

Mark 9:30-50 (New American Standard Bible)

Death and Resurrection Foretold

30(A)From there they went out and began to go through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know about it.    31For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, "(B)The Son of Man is to be [a]delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later."    32But (C)they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.    33(D)They came to Capernaum; and when He was in (E)the house, He began to question them, "What were you discussing on the way?"    34But they kept silent, for on the way (F)they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. 35Sitting down, He called the twelve and said to them, "(G)If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all."    36Taking a child,

“When faith confronts the demonic, God’s omnipotence is its sole assurance, and God’s sovereignty is its only restriction. This is the faith which experiences the miracle of deliverance.” William Lane, NICNT, p. 336

He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them,

37"(H)Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me."

Dire Warnings (Serious Consequences)

38(I)John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and (J)we tried to prevent him because he was not following us."

39But Jesus said, "Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me.    40"(K)For he who is not against us is [b]for us.    41"For (L)whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.

42"(M)Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.    43"(N)If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life crippled, than, having your two hands, to go into (O)hell, into the (P)unquenchable fire,

45"If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame, than, having your two feet, to be cast into (Q)hell, 47"(R)If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than, having two eyes, to be cast into (S)hell,

48(T)where THEIR WORM DOES NOT DIE, AND (U)THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.

49"For everyone will be salted with fire.

50"Salt is good; but (V)if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? (W)Have salt in yourselves, and (X)be at peace with one another."

Mark 9:30-50 (New International Version)

30They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know

where they were, 31because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.” 32But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

Who is Greatest?

33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.    35Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.”    36He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.”

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us

38“Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.” 39“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40for whoever is not against us is for us. 41I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

42“And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. 43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.[a] 45And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.[b]

47And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48where “ ‘their worm does not die,       and the fire is not quenched.’[c]

Mark 10:1-16 (New American Standard Bible)

Jesus' Teaching about Divorce

1(A)Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, (B)according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.

2Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.    3And He answered and said to them, "What did Moses command you?"    4They said, "(C)Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY."

5But Jesus said to them, "(D)Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.

6"But (E)from the beginning of creation, God (F)MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE. 7"(G)FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER[a], 8(H)AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.    9"What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." 10In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.

11And He said to them, "(I)Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12and (J)if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery."

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13(K)And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.    14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; (L)for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

15"Truly I say to you, (M)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all."

16And He (N)took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

1Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

2Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

4They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”

5“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. 6“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a] 7‘For this re9ason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8and the two will become one flesh.’[c] So they are no longer two, but one. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

10When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

The Little Children and Jesus

13People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

Mark 10:17-34 (New American Standard Bible)

The Rich Young Ruler

17(A)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (B)knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to (C)inherit eternal life?"    18And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

19"You know the commandments, '(D)DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'"

20And he said to Him, "Teacher, I have kept (E)all these things from my youth up."    21Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess

and give to the poor, and you will have (F)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."    22But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.    23And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, "(G)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!"

24The disciples (H)were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25"(I)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."    26They were even more astonished and said to Him, "Then who can be saved?"

27Looking at them, Jesus said, "(J)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God."

28(K)Peter began to say to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You."

29Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, (L)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake,

30but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (M)the age to come, eternal life.    31"But (N)many who are first will be last, and the last, first."

Jesus' Sufferings Foretold

32(O)They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they (P)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,

33saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (Q)the Son of Man will be [a]delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.

34"They will mock Him and (R)spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again."

Mark 10:17-34 (New International Version)

The Rich Young Man

17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good–except God alone. 19You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[a]”

20“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[b] to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

28Peter said to him, “We have left everything to follow you!”

29“I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields–and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Jesus Again Predicts His Death

32They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33“We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”

Mark 10:35-52 (NASB)

35(A)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You."

36And He said to them, "What do you want Me to do for you?"    37They said to Him, "Grant that we (B)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory."

38But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (C)to drink the cup that I drink, or (D)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?"

39They said to Him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink (E)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.

40"But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; (F)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."    41(G)Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.

42Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.

43"But it is not this way among you, (H)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;    44and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.

45"For even the Son of Man (I)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46(J)Then they came to Jericho And (K)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 47When he heard that it was Jesus the (L)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, (M)Son of David, have mercy on me!"

48Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, "(N)Son of David, have mercy on me!"    49And Jesus stopped and said, "Call him here." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "(O)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you."

50Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.

51And answering him, Jesus said, "What do you want Me to do for you?" And the blind man said to Him, "[a](P)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!"

52And Jesus said to him, "Go; (Q)your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

Mark 10:35-52 (New International Version)

The Request of James and John

35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. "Teacher," they said, "we want you to do for us whatever we ask."

36"What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.

37They replied, "Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory."

38"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?"

39"We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared."

41When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

48Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

49Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." 50Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

Mark 11:1-14 (New American Standard Bible)

The Triumphal Entry

1(A)As they approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and (B)Bethany, near (C)the Mount of Olives, He sent two of His disciples,    2and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.

3"If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' you say, 'The Lord has need of it'; and immediately he will send it back here."

4They went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied it.

5Some of the bystanders were saying to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"

6They spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission.

7(D)They brought the colt to Jesus and put their coats on it; and He sat on it.

8And many spread their coats in the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields.

9Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:         "Hosanna!         (E)BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD;       10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;         Hosanna (F)in the highest!"

11(G)Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, (H)He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.

12(I)On the next day, when they had left Bethany, He became hungry.

13Seeing at a distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if perhaps He would find anything on it; and when He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.

Mark 11:1-14 (New International Version)

The Triumphal Entry

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.' "

This is the beginning of the last week of Jesus’ life on earth

11:3 – 1st Person

4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, "What are you doing, untying that colt?" 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,    "Hosanna![a]"    "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"[b]     10"Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!"    "Hosanna in the highest!"

11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Jesus Clears the Temple

12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard him say it.

Mark 11:15-26 (New American Standard Bible)

   15(A)Then they came to Jerusalem. And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves;

16and He would not permit anyone to carry merchandise through the temple.

17And He began to teach and say to them, "Is it not written, '(B)MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER FOR ALL THE NATIONS'? (C)But you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN."

18The chief priests and the scribes heard this, and (D)began seeking how to destroy Him; for they were afraid of Him, for (E)the whole crowd was astonished at His teaching.

19(F)When evening came, they would go out of the city.

20(G)As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots up.

21Being reminded, Peter said to Him, "(H)Rabbi, look, the fig tree which You cursed has withered."

22And Jesus answered saying to them, "(I)Have faith in God.

This is the beginning of the last week of Jesus’ life on earth

82GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

23"(J)Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.

24"Therefore I say to you, (K)all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.

25"Whenever you (L)stand praying, (M)forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your transgressions.

26["[a](N)But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions."]

Mark 11:15-26 (New International Version)

15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written:    " 'My house will be called       a house of prayer for all nations'[a]? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'[b]"

18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

19When evening came, they[c] went out of the city.

The Withered Fig Tree

20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!"

22"Have[d] faith in God," Jesus answered. 23"I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."[e]

The OBJECT of my faith is more important than the AMOUNT of my faith.

Mark 11:27-12:12 (NAS)

27They came again to Jerusalem. (A)And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him,

28and began saying to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things, or who gave You this authority to do these things?"

29And Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one question, and you answer Me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.    30"Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? Answer Me."

83GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

31They began reasoning among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?'

32"But shall we say, 'From men'?"--they were afraid of the people, for everyone considered John to have been a real prophet.

33Answering Jesus, they said, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things."

Mark 12

1(B)And He began to speak to them in parables: "(C)A man (D)PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT, AND DUG A VAT UNDER THE WINE PRESS AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to [a]vine-growers and went on a journey.

2"At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine-growers, in order to receive some of the produce of the vineyard from the vine-growers.

3"They took him, and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

4"Again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.

5"And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.

6"He had one more to send, a beloved son; he sent him last of all to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'    7"But those vine-growers said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!'

8"They took him, and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.

9"What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vine-growers, and will give the vineyard to others.

10"Have you not even read this Scripture:         '(E)THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED,         THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone;       11(F)THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD,         AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?"

12(G)And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He spoke the parable against them And so (H)they left Him and went away.

Mark 11:27-12:12 (NIV)

27They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28"By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"

29Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30John's baptism—was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!"

31They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' 32But if we say, 'From men'...." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)

33So they answered Jesus, "We don't know."       Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

Mark 12

The Parable of the Tenants

1He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

6"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

7"But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9"What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10Haven't you read this scripture:    " 'The stone the builders rejected       has become the capstone[a];     11the Lord has done this,       and it is marvelous in our eyes'[b]?"

12Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

Mark 12:13-27 (NAS)

Jesus Answers the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes

13(A)Then they sent some of the Pharisees and (B)Herodians to Him in order to (C)trap Him in a statement.

14They came and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?

15"Shall we pay or shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a [a]denarius to look at."

16They brought one. And He said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."

17And Jesus said to them, "(D)Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him.

18(E)Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying,

19"Teacher, Moses wrote for us that (F)IF A MAN'S BROTHER DIES and leaves behind a wife AND LEAVES NO CHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.

20"There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children.

   21"The second one married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise;

22and so all seven left no children. Last of all the woman died also.

23"In the resurrection, [b]when they rise again, which one's wife will she be? For all seven had married her."

24Jesus said to them, "Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God?

25"For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

26"But regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, (G)in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, '(H)I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob'?

27"(I)He is not the God of the dead, but of the living; you are greatly mistaken."

Mark 12:13-27 (New International Version)

Paying Taxes to Caesar

13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 15Should we pay or shouldn't we?"

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." 16They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"       "Caesar's," they replied.

17Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."

And they were amazed at him.

Marriage at the Resurrection

18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. 20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23At the resurrection[a] whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?"

LEVIRATE MARRIAGE

24Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God

of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'[b]? 27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!"

Mark 12:28-44 (NAS)

28(A)One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and (B)recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, "What commandment is the foremost of all?"

   29Jesus answered, "The foremost is, '(C)HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;

30(D)AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'

31"The second is this, '(E)YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

   32The scribe said to Him, "Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that (F)HE IS ONE, AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;

33(G)AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, (H)is much more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." (I)After that, no one would venture to ask Him any more questions.

35(J)And Jesus began to say, as He (K)taught in the temple, "How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the (L)son of David?

36"David himself said in the Holy Spirit,         '(M)THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD,         "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND,         UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET."'

89GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

37"David himself calls Him 'Lord'; so in what sense is He his son?" And (N)the large crowd enjoyed listening to Him.

38(O)In His teaching He was saying: "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like (P)respectful greetings in the market places,

39and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets,

40(Q)who devour widows' houses, and for appearance's sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation."

41(R)And He sat down opposite (S)the treasury, and began observing how the people were (T)putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.

42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.

   43Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;

44for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had (U)to live on."

Mark 12:28-44 (New International Version)

The Greatest Commandment

28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'[b] 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]There is no commandment greater than these."

32"Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33To love him with all your heart, with all

your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

Whose Son Is the Christ

35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ[d] is the son of David? 36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:    " 'The Lord said to my Lord:       "Sit at my right hand    until I put your enemies       under your feet." '[e] 37David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?"       The large crowd listened to him with delight.

38As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplaces, 39and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. Such men will be punished most severely."

The Widow's Offering

41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[f]worth only a fraction of a penny.[g]

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on."

53.What does Jesus now see?

54.What else does He see?

55.Whose attention does He want?Mark 13:1-18 (New American Standard Bible)

1(A)As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, "Teacher, behold [a]what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!"

2And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? (B)Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down."

3As He was sitting on (C)the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, (D)Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately,

4"Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?"

5And Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one misleads you.

6"Many will come in My name, saying, '(E)I am He!' and will mislead many.

7"When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened; those things must take place; but that is not yet the end.

8"For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.

9"But be on your guard; for they will (F)deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged (G)in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.

10"(H)The gospel must first be preached to all the nations.

11"(I)When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but it is the Holy Spirit.

12"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.

13"(J)You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.

14"But (K)when you see the (L)ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.

   15"(M)The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house;

16and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat.

17"But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!

18"But pray that it may not happen in the winter.

Mark 13:1-18 (New International Version)

1As he was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"

2"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"

5Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 6Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

95GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

9"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

14"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation'[a]standing where it[b] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

15Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak.

17How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18Pray that this will not take place in winter,

Mark 13:19-37 (New American Standard Bible)

19"For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred (A)since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will.

20"Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.

   21"And then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ'; or, 'Behold, He is there'; do not believe him;

22for false Christs and (B)false prophets will arise, and will show (C)signs and (D)wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect.    23"But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.

24"But in those days, after that tribulation, (E)THE SUN WILL BE DARKENED AND THE MOON WILL NOT GIVE ITS LIGHT,

25(F)AND THE STARS WILL BE FALLING from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.

26"Then they will see (G)THE SON OF MAN (H)COMING IN CLOUDS with great power and glory.

27"And then He will send forth the angels, and (I)will gather together His elect from the four winds, (J)from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven.

28"Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near.

29"Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door.

30"Truly I say to you, this [a]generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

31"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

32"(K)But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

33"Take heed, (L)keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come.

34"(M)It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert.

35"Therefore, (N)be on the alert--for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or (O)when the rooster crows, or (P)in the morning--

36in case he should come suddenly and find you (Q)asleep.

37"What I say to you I say to all, '(R)Be on the alert!'"

Mark 13:19-37 (New International Version)

19because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again. 20If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ[a]!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. 22For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

24"But in those days, following that distress,    " 'the sun will be darkened,       and the moon will not give its light;     25the stars will fall from the sky,       and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[b]

26"At that time men will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

28"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door. 30I tell you the truth, this generation[c] will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour Unknown

32"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[d]! You do not know when that time will come. 34It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.

35"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "

101GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

   1(A)Now (B)the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes (C)were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him;

2for they were saying, "Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people."

3(D)While He was in (E)Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very (F)costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.

4But some were indignantly remarking to one another, "Why has this perfume been wasted?

5"For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred [a]denarii, and the money given to the poor." And they were scolding her.

6But Jesus said, "Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me.

7"For you always have (G)the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

8"She has done what she could; (H)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

9"Truly I say to you, (I)wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her."

10(J)Then Judas Iscariot, (K)who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them.

11They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

 12(A)On the first day of (B)Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was being (C)sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?"  13And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him;

14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My (D)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'  15"And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there."

Mark 14:1-15 - NIV

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2"But not during the Feast," they said, "or the people may riot."

3While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

4Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume? 5It could have been sold for more than a year's wages[a] and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly.

6"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

102GOSPEL OF MARK - WORKBOOK

The Lord's Supper

12On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

13So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' 15He will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there."

Mark 14:16-31 (New American Standard Bible)

16The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.  17(E)When it was evening He came with the twelve.  18As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me--one who is eating with Me."  19They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, "Surely not I?"

20And He said to them, "It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl.

21"For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born."

The Lord's Supper

22(F)While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a (G)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is My body."

23And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24And He said to them, "This is My (H)blood of the (I)covenant, which is poured out for many.

25"Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."

26(J)After singing a hymn, they went out to (K)the Mount of Olives.

27(L)And Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away, because it is written, '(M)I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED.'

28"But after I have been raised, (N)I will go ahead of you to Galilee."

29But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away, yet I will not."

30And Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you, that (O)this very night, before (P)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times."

31But Peter kept saying insistently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all were saying the same thing also.

Mark 14:16-31 (New International Version)

16The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.

18While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me."

19They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely not I?"

20"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

22While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body."

23Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank from it.

24"This is my blood of the[a] covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. 25"I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God."

26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

27"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written:    " 'I will strike the shepherd,       and the sheep will be scattered.'[b] 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."

30"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice[c]

you yourself will disown me three times."

31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.

Mark 14:32-52 (NAS)32   (1) They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed." 33   And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very (2) distressed and troubled. 34   And He said to them, "(3) My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch." 35   And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, (4) the hour might pass Him by. 36   And He was saying, "(5) Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (6) yet not what I will, but what You will." 37   And He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour?

38   "(7) Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." 39   Again He went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40   And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41   And He came the third time, and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; (8) the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42   "Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" 43   (9) Immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44   Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away under guard." 45   After coming, Judas immediately went to Him, saying, "(10) Rabbi!" and kissed Him. 46   They laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47   But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48   And Jesus said to them, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49   "Every day I was with you (11) in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures." 50   And they all left Him and fled. 51   A young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they seized him. 52   But he pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.

Mark 14:32-52 (NIV)

Gethsemane

32They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here

while I pray." 33He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death," he said to them. "Stay here and keep watch." 35Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36"Abba,[1] Father," he said, "everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will." 37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." 39Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. 41Returning the third time, he said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus Arrested

43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50Then everyone deserted him and fled. 51A young man, wearing nothing but a

linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

Mark 14:53-72 - NAS53   (39) They led Jesus away to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes gathered together. 54   Peter had followed Him at a distance, (40) right into (41) the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the officers and (42) warming himself at the fire. 55   Now the chief priests and the whole [2] (43) Council kept trying to obtain testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, and they were not finding any. 56   For many were giving false testimony against Him, but their testimony was not consistent. 57   Some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, 58   "We heard Him say, '(44) I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.'" 59   Not even in this respect was their testimony consistent. 60   The high priest stood up and came forward and questioned Jesus, saying, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?" 61   (45) But He kept silent and did not answer. (46) Again the high priest was questioning Him, and saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" 62   And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see (47) THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and (48) COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." 63   (49) Tearing his clothes, the high priest said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? 64   "You have heard the (50) blasphemy; how does it seem to you?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. 65   Some began to (51) spit at Him, and (52) to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, "(53)

Prophesy!" And the officers received Him with slaps in the face. 66   (54) As Peter was below in (55) the courtyard, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came, 67   and seeing Peter (56) warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the (57) Nazarene." 68   But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are talking about." And he (58) went out onto the porch.[3] 69   The servant-girl saw him, and began once more to say to the bystanders, "This is one of them!" 70   But again (59) he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders were again saying to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, (60) for you are a Galilean too." 71   But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you are talking about!" 72   Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, "Before (61) a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." And he began to weep.Mark 14:53-72 - NIV

Before the Sanhedrin

53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders and teachers of the law came together. 54Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58"We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.' " 59Yet even then their testimony did not agree. 60Then the high priest stood up before

them and asked Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ,[6] the Son of the Blessed One?" 62"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." 63The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more witnesses?" he asked. 64"You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?" 65They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him. 66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said. 68But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway.[7] 69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them."

70Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean." 71He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about." 72Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[8] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice[9] you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.

Mark 15:1-24 - NAS

Jesus before Pilate

1   (1) Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole [1] (2) Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. 2   (3) Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him, "It is as you say." 3   The chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. 4   Then Pilate questioned Him again, saying, "Do You not answer? See how many charges they bring against You!" 5   But Jesus (4) made no further answer; so Pilate was amazed. 6   (5) Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7   The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8   The crowd went up and began asking him to

do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9   Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" 10   For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11   But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (6) to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12   Answering again, Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" 13   They shouted back, "Crucify Him!" 14   But Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!" 15   Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (7) scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16   (8) The soldiers took Him away into (9) the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman [2] (10) cohort.

17   They dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18   and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 19   They kept beating His head with a [3] reed, and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him. 20   After they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. 21   (11) They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (12) Rufus), to bear His cross.

The Crucifixion

22   (13) Then they brought Him to the place (14) Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23   They tried to give Him (15) wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24   And they crucified Him, and (16) divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots for them to decide what each man should take.

Mark 15:1-24 – NIV

Jesus Before Pilate

1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. 3The chief priests accused him of many things. 4So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of." 5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. 6Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. 9"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, 10knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. 12"What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them. 13"Crucify him!" they shouted. 14"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.Mark 15:25-47 - NAS

25It was the third hour when they crucified Him.

26The inscription of the charge against Him read, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

27They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left.

28[And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And He was numbered with transgressors."]

29Those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,  30save Yourself, and come down from the cross!"  31In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others; He cannot

save Himself.  32"Let this Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.  33When the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34At the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"  35When some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."  36Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down."

37And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. 38And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

40There were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and Joses, and Salome.  41When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and minister to Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried 42When evening had already come, because it was the preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

43Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

44Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead.  45And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.

Mark 15:25-47 - NIV25It was the third hour when they crucified him. 26The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.[1] 29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30come down from the cross and save yourself!"

31In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! 32Let this Christ,[2] this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus

33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"[3] 35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." 36One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.

37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and[4] saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son[5] of God!"

40Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

The Burial of Jesus

42It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached, 43Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.

44Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. 45When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

46So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.
