WALKING TOUR OF TRANSURBAN'S PROPOSED NEW TOLL ROAD

Transurban's proposed 5.5 billion tollroad and tunnel is short on detail and big on risk.

Whilst we need an urgent solution to the traffic and trucks that overwhelm our streets, we deserve more from our government than a rushed second-rate deal designed to line the pockets of Transurban's shareholders by increasing car dependency.

Having bypassed normal planning procedures, Transurban could be granted approval to start construction on this tollway before the end of the year. Before the government or Transurban sign away the West we need to better understand what’s really at stake.

Last week of the FOR THE LOVE OF THE REEF Fundraiser

We're challenging you to go without something else that you love - coffee, chocolate, or beer - for two weeks in May to raise funds to protect the Reef and our climate

As Australians, we all love the Great Barrier Reef, but right now our Reef and climate are under threat from coal port expansion just 50km from the Whitsunday Islands.

That’s why we're challenging you to go without something else that you love - coffee, chocolate, or beer - for two weeks in May to raise funds to protect the Reef and our climate.

Climate change is the biggest threat to food security. And we know that the coal in the Galilee Basin has to stay in the ground to avoid dangerous global warming. If we want to keep enjoying things like coffee, chocolate and beer into the future, we have to do everything we can to secure a safe climate.

What will you go without for the love of the Reef? Sign up below, it only takes 2 minutes!

1. SIGNUPFor the love of the Reef, sign up to go without something you love - either coffee, chocolate, or beer - from May 18-31 to raise funds to protect the Great Barrier Reef. Create your own personal profile by clicking on the tab below. You can even get your friends to join you by creating a team!

2. RAISE FUNDSFundraising is always easier than it seems, so don’t be afraid to set an ambitious target! This is the first workshop in a dialogue which aims to provide a forum to discuss what it means to campaign for the urgent restoration of a safe climate, and to develop a discussion paper for the movement outlining a framework and options for climate campaigning. The paper would be designed to provide a basis for future action.

Issues for the dialogue include: given evidence that climate change is already dangerous,  what needs to

be added to existing approaches to campaigning? looking at current campaigns,  what is climate campaigning at its best? what is missing  from current approaches to campaigning?  is there a need for  new approaches?  if so, what goals, strategies and ways of engaging people might be needed? how will we act on these ideas? How will we engage existing climate

groups?

Leaving the grid is becoming easier and cheaper. Advances in battery technology, falling costs of solar PV, increases in electricity prices and growing concerns regarding the environment are making leaving the grid an attractive proposition to many consumers. But how close are we to the point where it makes economic sense for consumers to disconnect? How will solar panel and battery storage price trends impact this, and how many people are likely to defect from the grid? And what will be the response from the traditional electricity sector to this challenge? This seminar will explore the likelihood of grid defection and the opportunities and challenges that distributed generation poses to Australia.

COMMUNITY VIGIL - CALLING ON LABOR TO REPLACE HAZELWOOD

Hazelwood is Victoria’s oldest and dirtiest power station, and is costing us $917 million in hidden costs to people and the environment [1]. Labor promised to close Hazelwood in 2010 -- we need to keep up the pressure until Australia’s dirtiest power station is closed.

We are calling for the complete closure of Hazelwood, including rehabilitating the mine and supporting the Latrobe Valley community to make a transition to a clean economy with sustainable jobs.

There are already so many good reasons to replace Hazelwood: it’s dirty, it’s unsafe and our electricity grid is oversupplied. If we’re serious about the health of the community and taking real action on climate change, we must close Hazelwood and invest in renewable energy.

In particular we are looking to help people who would be interested in establishing gardening and cleaning cooperatives.

About Earth Worker Co-operativeEarthworker is a community-led initiative to provide sustainable, wealth-creating jobs that empower local communities and provide clean energy solutions.

Earthworker is setting up a Australia-wide network of community-owned cooperatives, beginning with Eureka’s Future – a worker-owned factory to manufacture high-quality solar hot water systems in Morwell, in the heart of Victoria’s coal-burning LaTrobe Valley.

Forging unlikely alliances between trade unionists, environmentalists and small manufacturers, the project is a powerful and positive endeavour to revitalise local economies, address climate change, and assist a 'just transition' from fossil fuel to clean renewable energy.

Earthworker is helping to creating new ways to meet our needs - fostering fair, democratic workplaces, local manufacturing, strong communities and sustainable technologies.

Film screening: FRACKMAN

Dayne Pratzky loved the quiet life on his rural block in central Queensland. Then the coal seam gas company arrived, and that changed everything. Legally he couldn’t stop them mining his land, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t fight. And so began a David and Goliath battle against a $200 Billion industry. Along the way he found love, tragedy and triumph.

Frackman is like no other Australian film. It aims to spark a broad national conversation about the risks of our headlong rush into massive coal seam gas development. Five years in the making, it not only entertains and engages, it also gives audiences the tools to get involved in what is becoming the largest social movement our nation has seen in decades. It’s a deeply political film, but not the old style that is so badly failing us. This is the New Politics, bringing together old and young, city and country, conservative and progressive in a shared effort to prevent an environmental catastrophe. Can we imagine any other issue that would bring together the likes of Alan Jones and Bob Brown?

See it and find out why. Read more +

Launch of the book “GUARDING EDEN”

Deborah Hart’s book Guarding Eden, will be launched by Professor David Karoli, Professor of atmospheric science Melbourne University and a board member of the Climate Change Authority

Guarding Eden tells the personal stories of twelve ordinary people who were so concerned about climate change that they altered their lives to do something about it. Some did quiet backroom work in research, drafted submissions or wrote to politicians; others decided to go public, really public – one was part of the team occupying a 160-metre power-plant chimney, one went on a hunger strike publicised around the world, another started the Lock the Gate Alliance with landowners fighting coal and gas companies. They come from all walks of life: there’s a nurse, a musician, an insurance broker, a teacher, a lawyer, a vet.

Surprisingly touching, Guarding Eden makes an issue as complex and controversial as climate change feel human and deeply real.

WSUD ASSET MANAGEMENT FORUM - DEFINING THE PROBLEM

Water Sensitive Urban Design update from Clearwater

What kind of challenges do you face when managing WSUD assets? Even when you actively tackle these challenges, do you feel like you’re

addressing the same issue over and over again? Are you sure that you are addressing the ‘root cause’ of the problem and

not just its symptoms?

Effective management of WSUD assets is complex and multi-faceted. It involves organisational commitment, technical know-how, effective processes and ongoing engagement. While as an industry we are making good progress, we need to acknowledge that we will continue to work in a complex environment which can seem baffling at times. It is therefore important we use the appropriate tools and techniques in our problem solving approach. Identifying and addressing the ‘root cause’ ensures you are investing in the right solution and creating better outcomes.

This interactive workshop will focus on problem definition, a critical first step when approaching a problem. Facilitated by our problem solving expert Dougal Edwards from the Hargraves Institute, we will explore and unpack the key challenges in WSUD Asset Management faced by the industry to gain insight

As an attendee you will: Learn practical tools on problem definition that enables greater

understanding on how to work through and identify the root cause using a real life problem

Hear practical case studies from council on how they approached a problem on WSUD Asset Management

Have the opportunity to build your peer networks and share insights/learnings across organisations on WSUD Asset Management

PLASTIC FREE JULY

In 2014 over 14,000 people from 69 nations around the world joined us in refusing single-use plastic. Thanks to all the people, groups, schools and

businesses who got involved and learnt new habits! At 30 cafes across Perth's western suburbs people were encouraged to bring reusable cups for takeaway coffees. During July 1,540 disposable cups were saved from being thrown away

and 1,540 native trees were planted!

Join thousands taking the challenge to refuse single-use plastic. You can sign up for a day or a week if the whole month sounds overwhelming. Sign up to get recipes, ideas & everything you need to take part. Schools, cafes, businesses and groups from around the world are taking action in their communities to

reduce single-use plastic.

"Think about it, why would you make something that you are going to use for a few minutes out of a material that's basically going to last forever...What's up

with that?" - Jeb Berrier, BagIt movie.

The ChallengeThe challenge is quite simple. Attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July. "Single-use" includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging...basically anything that's intended only to be used once and then discarded. If refusing ALL single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the TOP 4 challenge (straws, plastic bags, plastic bottles &coffee cup lids). The rules Attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July. Remember it's not going to be easy! It is a challenge, not a competition so

don't worry about being perfect. Collect any unavoidable single-use plastic you buy. Keep in a dilemma bag

and share it with us at the end of the challenge. It's up to you regarding how long you participate. You might decide to go

plastic-free for a day, a week, a month or longer! However long you choose will still make a contribution.

Why you should participate Apart from the small amount of plastic which has been incinerated EVERY

piece of plastic which was ever produced still exists on earth somewhere. In the first 10 years of this century MORE plastic was produced than the entire last century!

Australians send 1 million tonnes of plastic waste to landfill each year. Do your part to make a change.
