The week before school officially starts, usually a Friday in August, kids are invited to come visit the campus and meet their teacher. They can find their classroom and see their desk while parents get a chance to introduce themselves to their child’s teacher. We also encourage students to drop off their school supplies on this day.

This is a Parents-Only evening where teachers and parents can meet without interruption. The 6th graders provide reasonable babysitting rates in different areas of the school (separated by grade, available for K-5 aged-children only). Students enjoy social time together with their new classmates while parents explore the school, tour the classrooms, and meet the teachers. This is also the first PTA meeting of the year.

We celebrate all the kids going back to school by having a picnic on the playground. We encourage “Least-Waste” dinners and generally have music, dancing, and an ice cream dessert provided by the PTA.

Peacefest is a reward system promoting teamwork while classes are in their “Specials” area. Each class works together to earn a "Peacefest" offered near the last day of each 9 weeks. How it works:  A large Peace 'buck" is visibly displayed in each special area class... music, art & p.e.  The "buck" is divided into 3 pieces.  The class keeps the 'buck" intact by working together to follow directions and behave appropriately.  The goal is to have 1 to 3 pieces of the "buck" left at the end of the class.  Upon doing so, the class is awarded 1 small Peace "buck" to be taken and kept in their homeroom. 85% of the total 'bucks" that are possible to earn in a nine weeks must be earned from all special areas combined in order to participate in the 9 weeks Peacefest.  Any class not earning 85% of the "bucks" will receive separate services that day.  In that case, after a group discussion, students earning 4's for personal development in ALL special areas will then be allowed to attend the Peacefest.  Others will remain behind to receive separate services.

The Fall Carnival is pretty much what you remember from your days at elementary school: Games, attractions, performances, food, and tons of energy-burning activities for the whole family.  This is an all hands on deck party that parents put on for the students.  Each classroom is in charge of a game or attraction with parent volunteers recruited by classroom captains at the start of the school year.  Financial sponsorships are accepted and you’ll also be asked to donate gently used books for the book walk, baked goods for the sweet shop, and assorted items.  The Carnival is always tons of fun for all the students.  It’s a fun event for the whole family and a great way to volunteer.

October Outdoor School

The Outdoor School, located on Lake LBJ near Marble Falls, is a three day, two night adventure in October, giving sixth grade students the opportunity to experience growth in personal development and team building, natural sciences and environmental studies, and social studies, as well as outdoor recreation in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Fifth grade students join in on the fun for a two day, one night adventure.

During November the cafeteria holds a special Thanksgiving Lunch. This is the only time the cafeteria staff requests a “reservation” in order to plan for the large number of extra meals to prepare. You are always welcome to join your child for lunch as long as you stay on school grounds and return your student to the stage steps in the cafeteria in time to re-join their class.

Cafeteria Student Events Students in grades 1st through 6th can

elect to participate in the Brykerwoods chapter of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Participants participate in after-school practice sessions and take written exam to qualify to be in the live Spelling Bee, which is held during school hours.

This is our annual auction to raise funds for our school. Items & services are donated and then sold to the highest bidder. Each classroom donates a themed basket that the parents either contribute items to or fund with donations.

At the end of the HOT school year, and after all their MARE studies, the kids get a day “off” to have a water play day. The 6th graders help plan and coordinate a water day for K-5th and then have their own water day planned at a nearby park.

Migration is the Bryker Woods version of graduation. Students will dress up as Monarch butterflies and "migrate" to first grade. The migration includes a performance by the students and a walk through of the first grade classrooms.

annual budget for the PTA based on input from the teachers and committee chair persons.  Additionally, the VP Budget monitors actual to budget performance during the year and oversees the evaluation of additional funding requests.

Buildings & Grounds

Help the school work with AISD to improve and maintain the campus... includes gardening, bike racks and green projects.

Communications

The Communications Team coordinates volunteers who compile the school directory, manage LivingTree, compile and publish the weekly newsletter and manage the marquis sign at the front entrance to Bryker Woods.

Ways & Means Includes the volunteers who chair the Panther Fund, Carnival, Spring Fling and many other “Fun”raisers throughout the year!

Campus Sustainability

TerraCycle:Manage the TerraCycle recycling program in the cafeteria and classrooms

Green Ribbon Schools Accreditation:Coordinate and execute 4 projects within the school year, document, and upload for ongoing annual re-accreditation process.

Sustainable Grants:Work to execute the Urban Forest Grant and write and submit future sustainable grant projects for the school year

EcoRise:  Work to support 6th grade sustainable elective as well as other teachers with the EcoRise Education Initiative

Grade Level Reps

There is a chair for all of the grade level representatives, followed by a room parent representing each class. The grade level representative is responsible for sending out communications to all parents in their class to help facilitate the coordination of all activities throughout the year . The grade rep helps to coordinate the Spring Fling basket and the Carnival event for their class as well as assembling teacher’s gifts throughout the year.

community and our sister school Zavala. Duties include: attending monthly meetings with the Friends of Zavala committee, coordinating donations from the Bryker Woods Book Fair, coordinating clothes drives and the annual family adoption program at the holidays (where Zavala families who qualify for City of Austin Blue Santa program get adopted by Bryker Woods families who provide them with presents and clothes) and to help with any other needs at Zavala.

Health & Wellness

The purpose of the Health and Wellness Committee is to improve the health and wellness of the Bryker Woods school community.  Health and Wellness Committee volunteers help students, parents and staff achieve a healthier lifestyle through biking and running programs, school lunch improvements and nutrition education.  

Hospitality The Hospitality Committee is responsible for coordinating weekly Monday Morning Coffee, monthly Teacher Treats, and occasional “Principal Coffee Talks” throughout the school year. They also plan and coordinate yearly events such as Back to School Night, Kinder Round-Up, Tears & Cheers, Fall Picnic, Staff Appreciation and Summer Kinder Playdates

The Student Events Committee helps plan and coordinate yearly events such as Turkey Trot, Spelling Bee, AXBW, the Science Fair, and Water Days.

The student services committee helps to coordinate the following programs offered to our children.  After School Programs, Teacher Helper Program, School Supplies and Grade Level Representatives.

Technology The Technology Committee help support he teaching and use of technology at Bryker Woods. Marlene O’Keefe is our technology specialist who helps the students and staff with computers and technical advancement.

After-School ProgramsThe After-School Programs Committee finds and coordinates a variety of fun, educational after-school courses for our kids. AxBWAxBW is our very own Art and Music festival a la SxSW.  Every student enrolled at Bryker Woods has at least one art project on display, and there are several stages set up around campus.  All students are encouraged to show off their talents and cheer on their friends at this exciting event!  AxBW would not be possible without a team of parent volunteers, so please contact the Student Events Chair if you are interested in participating..

All-School Family Picnic- Panthers on the GreenCelebrate the beginning of a new school year with an all school family picnic on the playground.

Campus Advisory Council Campus Advisory Council - The Bryker Woods CAC is required by state law and provides advice and assistance to the school principal, including guidance in key areas related to the campus, such as budget, educational programs, support services, staff development, communications, and stakeholder involvement. The CAC assists in reviewing relevant performance data, develops the Campus Improvement Plan (CIP), and holds meetings for discussion and public input. CAC membership consists of the Principal, teachers and other staff, parents, community and business representatives.

CafeteriaOur cafeteria works with www. SchoolCafe.com . The website has already assigned every student at Bryker Woods a 4 digit code. It is not the same as your child’s AISD student ID number. You are able to fund your child’s account by going to the website and adding money via credit card, or you can bring cash to the cafeteria staff. You can also place restrictions or notices on your child’s account, e.g. allergies, lactose intolerance or even “Don’t allow Billy to buy chocolate milk except on Friday-treat days.” It will appear on the computer at check-out.

A Full Meal includes the entree, milk, 1 fruit, and 2 vegetables. If your child buys a full meal they must purchase at least three items INCLUDING 1 fruit or 1 vegetable. They can supplement their home-packed lunch box with the single items listed above. NOTE: They can only buy ONE snack item per day and frozen yogurt is considered a snack even though it is only available on Friday-treat days.As long as your child’s account has a positive balance, they can order drinks (milk or bottled water), a fruit, a vegetable, snack or a full meal. If the account does not have a positive balance, the cafeteria staff will allow them to go into a negative balance of up to -7.00 as long as they order the full meal. At that point they will contact you to fund the account. They will never allow a child to go hungry, but they will not allow a child to continually order snack items on a negative balance. Exact change is always appreciated and you can discuss with your teacher how money should be transferred if you do not want to use Schoolcafe.com. Please note that NO CHANGE will be given to students. It will be held by the cafeteria staff for parents to pick up at their convenience.

CampusOur small campus has been here for over 79 years! You may remember going to an elementary school just like this one. Because of our small campus size, we have several portables. Kinder and first grade are in the North-South hallway. Our gym is located to the left as you exit this hallway

Fifth and sixth graders are in the East-West hallway and the art and music room are located down the stairs at the end of this hall. Most of the other grades are in the portables.The “PTA Closet” is located in the main hallway across from the teacher workroom. If you ever need access (or just want to tidy it up!), ask the front office staff for the keys. We ask that you be considerate of our neighbors when parking in the area and never park in the teacher’s parking lot.When you are visiting campus please remember to check-in at the front office on the Raptor system to get your ID sticker. This is not necessary for regular pick-up and drop-off, only if you are expecting to be on campus for a longer amount of time. EVERYONE on campus should have an ID; please report anyone who does not have a visitor ID or permanent AISD ID to the front office.

DirectoryOur office staff and team of volunteers distribute a new directory every year. It will have the classroom listings for every teacher. Personal information (phone numbers, addresses, etc) will only be printed with your permission. The directories are only given to Bryker Woods families, they are not sold or distributed anywhere else. Including your name, address, and contact info gives other families (and their kids) the chance to find you if you’re in their neighborhood, classroom, or grade. Extra copies are available for purchase.

Extend-A-Care and Creative ActionThe official vendors for AISD after-school care on campus. You may register your child at Extend-A-Care and Creative Action.

Grocery Card Fundraiser

The Grocery Card Program at Bryker Woods raises about 10% of the PTA budget each year by selling HEB, Randalls and Wheatsville grocery cards to parents. We purchase the cards at a discount from the grocery stores and sell them at face value, earning about 2-4% for the school with each sale. If you buy groceries, using the Grocery Card Program doesn't cost anything extra, and the more people that participate, the more funds we raise. We hope you will participate in this easy fundraiser each month!  For more information visit the grocery card section of the PTA website or send an email to BWGroceryCards@gmail.com.

Living TreeThe Bryker Woods community uses a system called LivingTree to help communicate and coordinate schedules, events, and pictures. Through the LivingTree platform, teachers, parents and guardians may share messages, events, and photos with their classes (e.g., “Billy’s 1st Grade Class”). The school administration, teachers, and PTA representatives also use LivingTree to share important information with the whole school. In addition, LivingTree is a closed, password-protected platform. In order to gain access to LivingTree, there is a group code for each class. Check with your teacher for your group code. Members of the Bryker Woods community are also eligible to participate in the LivingTree community’s group. The community group is generally not used for official school communications, but it is available for less formal discussions relating to Bryker Woods or non school things like garage sales or looking for equipment/clothes to borrow or talented performances around town by the BrykerWoods community. It is also a closed forum only accessible by members of the community. Email the Communications chair if you would like the Group Code for this Community Group. 

LunchYou are always welcome to visit the campus and enjoy lunch with your child! Please remember to check in at the front office to get your Raptor ID tag. Also, bring cash if you plan on purchasing a lunch for yourself. You may use your child’s Schoolcafe.com account as well, but please arrive on time to order with your child and his/her classmates. You may also bring a “special” lunch (e.g. P Terry’s or other), and you may eat in the cafeteria or out on the playground as long as you stay on campus. Report back to the cafeteria with your child in time for their teacher to pick them up with the entire class. Please see the “Cafeteria” section for more information about ordering lunch.

Monday CoffeeEvery Monday (or Tuesday if we have no school scheduled on Monday), the PTA offers coffee outside in front of the school for parents arriving at

assembly. It’s a great way to meet other parents and keep up with all the activities offered at school while also getting your caffeine fix!

Panther FundEvery year we raise funds for the PTA using three main fundraisers; the Panther Fund, the Fall Carnival and Spring Fling. Instead of asking you to turn your child into a salesperson (and making your life miserable in the process), we don’t sell wrapping paper, cookies or candles, we simply ask for a donation that you can afford for your family. This yearly donation funds a major portion of the PTA’s budget including field trips for all grades, computers in each classroom, and a technology specialist to assist our teachers.

Outdoor ClassroomNOT to be confused with Outdoor School, the Outdoor classroom is an area that the kids can walk to on Shoal Creek. Almost all the grades will make their way down to the “lower field” of the playground, through the locked gates, and down the pathway to a small amphitheatre on Shoal Creek for Outdoor School.

Parent-Teacher ConferencesConferences are available during each semester. Teachers usually prefer to schedule them on a Monday “In-Service” day, but arrangements are made individually by each teacher.

Party PacksClassroom parties can generate a LOT of waste. The school has two "Party Packs" that contain 24 plastic plates, cups, and utensils that can be re-used over and over again. Click on the PTA’s Go Green page to reserve a Party Pack for your classroom party. Check out the other videos and green tips while you’re there.

Principal’s CoffeeThroughout the school year, Principal Kronke will host morning coffee chats to discuss different topics with parents. These are informal talks usually last 20- 30 minutes so parents can connect with the school, but still make it on time for work.

Raptor Check-In SystemWhenever you are on campus for longer than the average drop-off or pick-up, you’ll need to check in at the office with the Raptor system. The first time you do this you’ll need to bring your state ID. The office staff will process your application for the Raptor. Next time you arrive to volunteer, have lunch with your kids, or meet with a teacher, you check in at the Raptor computer station in the front office. No one should be on campus that does not have a permanent AISD ID, or a Raptor ID tag.

Science FairThe Science Fair is just like what you remember from school!   All students, from kindergarten through 6th grade, are encouraged to participate, and display their student-led experiments and research projects for the whole school to view.   It is a perfect opportunity for kids to be fun and messy (if that is what floats your boat!), all while learning more about something that makes them curious.   Staff and volunteers judge projects and award winners.  Top projects in grades 3–6th may even continue on to take part in the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival.   If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Student Events Chair.  

Sixth Grade Safety PatrolThe Safety Patrol is a special group of sixth grade students dedicated to serving the school and community by ensuring the safety of the students and their families, our staff, and visitors.  The Safety Patrol assists with the safe morning drop-off and afternoon pickup of students in the circular drive, as well as assisting with the pedestrian crossings at the entrance and exit to the circular drive. The Safety Patrol also contributes by leading the school in the morning pledge and announcements. Sixth grade only does this for the first half of the year, while fifth grade does this for the second semester.

Sixth Grade Reading BuddiesThe Reading Buddy program is a peer reading program which partners kindergartners with a sixth grade student for 30 minutes once a week. The sixth graders model reading skills and promote reading fluency with the kindergarten students. The buddy program promotes a positive attitude towards reading for the younger students and provides older students with leadership skills. Spelling BeeStudents in grades 1st through 6th can elect to participate in the Brykerwoods chapter of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.  Participants

Spring FlingThis is our annual auction to raise funds for our school. Items and services are donated by families and local businesses. Auction items are then sold to the highest bidder. Each classroom donates a themed basket that the parents either contribute items to or fund with donations. We have begun holding the Spring Fling auction off-campus as a “Parents Only” event.

Spirit DaysOccasionally we have “spirit days” on campus for the students. They might include Hawaiian Shirt Day, crazy hat day, pajama day or college jersey day. Check your child’s Monday folder and your classroom’s list serve; occasionally these are not campus-wide, but are grade specific.Student ID NumberAll students have a student ID number. It is printed on AISD report cards and progress reports.

Teacher TreatsEvery month parents “treat” the Bryker Woods teachers and staff to a pot-luck luncheon.  This tradition for the 50+ faculty and staff is a much appreciated (and anticipated!) event.  Each individual grade level is assigned a month and a theme to “host” the luncheon by bringing the food and goods. The coordination of volunteers for food and time will be managed by the teacher treats committee - the hosting grade just contributes food or help. Typically, September and December treats are school-wide, not a hosted by a specific grade.  

Teacher’s HelpersParent volunteers help teachers in the workroom by making copies, laminating, cutting, binding, etc. This is a way to help teachers prepare their necessary materials and save them time they would otherwise be putting in after school or on the weekends. The commitment is one hour per month for each parent volunteer.

Terra-cycling Recycling ProgramThe Bryker Woods Sustainability Committee has partnered with Terra-cycle as a drop-off point for several upcycling “brigades.” Terra-cycle turns trash into useful products again. Currently we accept juice pouches, chip bags, toothpaste and toothbrushes, cookie packaging, candy wrappers, and Elmer’s Glue products. At our BW Recycling Station (located in the main hallway outside of the cafeteria doors), we also accept batteries, wine corks,

ink cartridges, cell phones, eyeglasses, make-up containers, plastic gift cards and other “wallet waste.”Volunteer OpportunitiesThere are MANY ways to volunteer at Bryker Woods. First, complete the Volunteer training, and then find the right fit for you. Would you like to drop by every week and help in the lunch room? Shelve books in the library? Spend one hour a month in the workroom? Or one full day at the Science Fair? Get involved in your child’s school! We can find a way to work within any schedule limitations. Click onto the PTA website for Volunteer Information and find the right spot for you.Volunteer TrainingProviding a safe learning environment for our students is one our most important goals.  We are asking parents to receive training if they would like to volunteer to supervise students.  Refer to the BW PTA website under “Volunteer Training” for more information.

Water Days Bryker Woods parents, along with student leaders and staff, have the opportunity to get wet (or not) during Water Days.  After studying a variety of topics related to the ocean during MARE, every student enjoys a water day.  Parent volunteers set up water stations that include balloon relays, sponge tosses, a water slide, and other games where the kids get wet. This is our last “big” volunteer event of the school year and it requires many parent volunteers to be on campus.  Even if you can’t make it for one of the two designated water days, snack donations for the concession stand are greatly appreciated.

Zap ProgramZAP Program OverviewZap is a bike, walk, and move to school program whose mission is to make walking and biking to school a way of life. Zap (originally Boltage started in 2004) has generated over 365,000 kid powered miles to and from school, 15 million calories burned, and saved over 640,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions!We are challenging every student at Bryker Woods to move to school by biking, scootering, walking the entire way, or even parking a few blocks from school and walking.How Does it Work?First you will need a ZAP rfid tag to attach to your backpack. Your tag from last year will still work. If you are new to Bryker Woods or new to the ZAP Program, tags are available in the school office. When you arrive at school via ANY WAY but by car, park your bike if you have one, and walk under the ZAP pole at the front entryway of the school. You will know that you’ve been

“ZAPped” when you hear a bell and see the light on the ZAP flash.Online, your unique tag will register every trip you make using alternative transportation (other than by car)! Once students are registered online for the ZAP program, that unique number on their tag will match up with their name, and they can keep track of how many trips they've made. Students challenge themselves!How Do You Register?Once you pick up your tag from the office, parents, register your students online at https://bykerwoods.active4.me/. In order for the ZAP Program to work properly, it is critical that all participants register. The tags are ready and will be scanned and recorded immediately. Duties include: attending monthly meetings with the Friends of Zavala committee, coordinating donations from the Bryker Woods Book Fair, coordinating clothes drives and the annual family adoption program at the holidays (where Zavala families who qualify for City of Austin Blue Santa program get adopted by Bryker Woods families who provide them with presents and clothes) and to help with any other needs at Zavala.
