3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

3.1.1 Examine surfaces for conditions that could adversely affect the performance of the decorative plastic laminate installation, including edge performance.

3.1.2 Surfaces to be adhesively bonded shall be clean, dry and free of any dust, loose paint, wax, moisture, dirt, grease, oil, rust, or other contaminants.

06 40 23.10-20

Page 21: €¦ · Web viewUnsuitable substrates are high pressure laminate, plaster, concrete, and gypsum board. Examine surfaces for conditions that could adversely affect the performance

3.1.3 Commencement of work will constitute acceptance of existing conditions and surfaces to receive the work.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

3.2.1 Install materials according to referenced Specification Sections and the following conformance standards as applicable:3.2.1.1 AWI AWS.3.2.1.2 KCMA A161.1.

3.2.2 To avoid stress cracking, do not use square-cut inside corners. All inside corners to have a minimum 1/8 inch radius and all edges routed smooth.

3.2.3 Drill oversized holes for screws, bolts, and similar fasteners. Slightly countersink fasteners into face side of laminate-clad substrate.

3.2.4 Use carbide-tipped saw and router blades for cutting, with high tool speed and low feed speed. Keep cutting blades sharp. Use appropriate hold-downs to prevent vibration.

3.3 ADHESIVE SPRAY APPLICATIONS

3.3.1 Comply with adhesive manufacturer's printed installation instructions.

3.3.2 Apply contact adhesive uniformly to both surfaces and with a minimum 80 percent coverage for each surface. Apply PVA adhesive to one side with a minimum 80 percent coverage.

3.3.3 Apply two coats of adhesive to porous surfaces. Provide 100 percent coverage for edges.

3.3.4 Apply uniform downward pressure (30 to 40 psi minimum) across the entire bonded surface.

3.4 ADHESIVE BRUSH APPLICATIONS

3.4.1 Comply with adhesive manufacturer's printed installation instructions.

3.4.2 Apply contact adhesive uniformly to both surfaces with a brush or solvent-resistant medium nap roller; cover each surface 100 percent. Apply PVA adhesive to one side, for 100 percent coverage.

3.4.3 Provide two coats of adhesive on porous surfaces. Double coat edges.

3.4.4 Apply uniform downward pressure (30 to 40 psi minimum) across the entire bonded surface.

3.5 RESURFACING LAMINATE INSTALLATION

3.5.1 Comply with resurfacing laminate manufacturer's printed installation instructions.

3.5.2 Substrate Repairs: Restore damaged substrates with specified repair materials. Sand and clean all repaired areas prior to applying resurfacing laminate.3.5.2.1 If bonding to a painted, stained, or varnished wood or wood veneer substrate,

sand surface smooth with #80 or #100 grit sandpaper. Remove all dust with a damp cloth. Allow to thoroughly dry.

3.5.2.2 If bonding a flat self-edge to an exposed substrate edge, the bonding surface will require a skim coat of the specified substrate material.

3.5.3 Substrate Cleaning: Substrates to receive resurfacing laminate must be clean and free of residue. Use one of the specified cleaning materials and allow proper dry time.

3.5.4 Prior to installation, and before removing peel sheet that covers laminate adhesive, dry fit

06 40 23.10-21

Page 22: €¦ · Web viewUnsuitable substrates are high pressure laminate, plaster, concrete, and gypsum board. Examine surfaces for conditions that could adversely affect the performance

laminate to substrate. After peel sheet is removed, apply uniform bonding pressure (30 to 40 psi minimum) over the entire bonded surface, using an approved roller.3.5.4.1 Resurfacing laminate is NOT repositionable. Any attempts to reposition the

laminate will result in inadequate bonding.

3.5.5 Where self-edging is required, comply with resurfacing laminate manufacturer's printed installation instructions, including recommended adhesive.

3.6 DECORATIVE METAL INSTALLATION

3.6.1 General: Install decorative metal assemblies plumb, level, and true according to approved shop drawings and manufacturer's published installation instructions.

3.6.2 For balanced panel installation, apply manufacturer's recommended backer sheet to back (unexposed) panel surface.

3.6.3 Form joints in locations shown on approved shop drawings and acceptable to manufacturer.

3.6.4 Allow for material expansion and contraction as recommended by manufacturer.

3.6.5 Spray Adhesive Application: Provide a smooth, uniform adhesive spread with a minimum 80 percent coverage on each surface; use only spray equipment approved by decorative metals manufacturer. Apply uniform pressure over 100 percent of the area to be bonded, using approved rollers. Allow to dry according to manufacturer's recommendations. Promptly remove excess adhesive from material surfac es with specified adhesive cleaner.

3.6.6 Resurfacing Applications Using RE-COVER: Prior to installation, and before removing peel sheet that covers decorative metal laminate adhesive, dry fit metal to substrate. After peel sheet is removed, apply uniform bonding pressure (30 to 40 psi minimum) over the entire bonded surface, using an approved roller. RE-COVER metal is NOT repositionable. Any attempts to reposition the metal will result in inadequate bonding.

3.6.7 Do not remove any protective films until completion of installation.

3.7 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

3.7.1 Clean decorative plastic laminate according to manufacturer's printed care and maintenance instructions.

3.7.2 Protect installed products and finish surfaces from damage during remainder of construction period.
