Introduction

1. NOTE OF IMPORTANT GUIDANCE: By no means is it my intention to persuade you into using or believing everything in this manual. It is my hopes that you partake of this manual as a factual knowledge guide. It is up to you to determine what you want to believe or not to believe. In other words: Take what you want and leave the rest! I only present biblical facts and knowledge, whether it be from a Christian Bible; The Quran; I Ching; Hebrew Bible (Tanakh); Torah; the Ethiopian Bible; The Devil’s Bible; The Kojiki ( 古 事 記 , (Shinto)"Records of Ancient Matters" or "An Account of Ancient Matters"), also known as Furukotofumi; the Urantia Book (196 Books), or any other Bible! Every one of the aforementioned are “HOLY BIBLES”.

I’M NOT HERE TO IMPRESS YOU , OR TO PERSUADE YOU INTO ANYTHING

2. Jesus vs. Christ.

a. Indeed, Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus. It means: "Yahweh [the Lord] is Salvation.". The English spelling of Yeshua is “Joshua.” However, when translated from Hebrew into the Greek language, in which the New Testament was written, the name Yeshua becomes Iēsous. The English spelling for Iēsous is “Jesus.”

b. The word “Christ” means: The “Anointed One” - Our Lord · the Messiah · the Savior · the Son of God · the Lamb of God · the Good Shepherd · the Redeemer · the Prince of Peace · the Nazarene · the Galilean. It is NOT a surname. It is a job title! Therefore, using the term “Jesus Christ” is totally WRONG! How would you like to be called: Susan - Police Officer, or Paul - Taxi Cab Driver? Jesus had no middle or last name. If anything, He presented himself as: Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph.

c. “Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos, meaning “anointed one” or “chosen one.” This is the Greek equivalent of the

Page 6: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

6

Hebrew word Mashiach, or “Messiah.” “Jesus” is the Lord’s human name which came about 500 years ago, when the “J” was introduced into the modern-day alphabet.

3. Languages: I use five different languages to gather information for this Book:

English Hebrew Latin Koine Greek, and Aramaic (Jesus’ Language)

4. Subject matter may or may not be consistent with the authors own belief. I only present the facts and I try not to present my own beliefs (unless noted in text).

5. Due to subject matter having various cross-references, it may be necessary to repeat articles from my other Books. This eases the reader from obtaining a multitude of Books just to cover the specific subject in question.

6. I may have added some small prayers in between the Chapters.

7. Good Readings.

The Ultimate List Of Animals In The Bible

Find All of the Animals in the Bible With Scripture References (NLT)

You'll find lions, leopards, and bears (no tigers), along with nearly 100 other animals, insects, and creatures in the pages of the Bible. It's probably safe to assume that God is an animal lover.

Interestingly, domestic cats are not mentioned in the entire canon of Scripture.

Although the names of animals in the Bible vary from one translation to another and sometimes these creatures are difficult to identify, God's Word showcases numerous members of the animal kingdom.

The names on this list are based on the New Living Translation (NLT) with Scripture references provided for each Bible animal.

Mythical Animals In The Bible

Are there mythical animals hidden within the pages of the King James Bible? Did any of these beasts actually exist?

The names of mythical animals are indeed found within the Bible. Exotic creatures such as the Leviathan, dragons, unicorns and others appear in books written by Job (the oldest in Scripture), Moses, King David, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and even the apostle John! Are such animal names the product of erroneously translated verses? Is it possible that some of the these believed mythical references are mentioning beasts that no longer exist?

This series will discuss whether or not several legendary or mythical animals named within the pages of Scripture were actually created by God. We will also reveal any symbolism attached to each beast such as who they may represent or any deep spiritual truth they convey. First, however, we need to briefly cover how mythical names ended up being placed within the KJV.

In 1604, King James I of England commissioned forty-seven scholars with the monumental task of translating ancient manuscripts written primarily in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek into English. One of their major obstacles was that Hebrew (used in writing in the Old Testament) was a notoriously hard language to learn and understand. Such difficulties would lead to mythical references to animals in particular.

Do pets go to heaven? Are dinosaurs found in Scripture? The red heifer and Jerusalem's temple

Accurately translating Hebrew's unique words and phrases, especially those referencing plants and animals, into their equivalence in English, proved especially tough. The translators did the best they could and after seven years of work produced the KJV Bible. Although largely succesfull in their efforts, scholars still debate how accurate they translated certain sections, including those that list the names of seemingly imaginary animals.

Page 16: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

16

But are they real?

A few commentaries argue that some Biblical verses refer to strictly mythical creatures. Still others, like the IVP Background Commentary of the Old Testament, state that certain beasts exist only in the spiritual realm. In their commentary on Job 41:1 the IVP states, "Biblically, Leviathan would therefore most easily fit into the category of 'supernatural' creature (like cherubim) as opposed to natural or purely mythological."

A Mythical Griffon

Many Biblical study tools state that most of the believed mythical creatures discussed in this series did exist but that the KJV translators made an error when they tried to match Hebrew words and phrases to an equivalent in English. Most modern translations of God's word attempt to correct these errors.

Evidence does suggest that the mythical beasts referred to in Scripture are not the stuff of legend and tall tales but rather were quite real. In his pivotal book "The Biblical Basis for Modern Science," Henry Morris states the following regarding the idea that some creatures in God's word are mythical.

"The biblical writers mention at least 160 different specific animals by name, and always the descriptions seem quite accurate, except for these few . . . (the behemoth, dragons, etc.). The latter are apparently also intended by the writers as real animals . . ." (Chapter 12, section "Dragons and Unicorns")

Page 17: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

17

Another possibility

The possibility exists that some mythical beasts, such as the behemoth and the Leviathan, may have existed just as the Bible describes them.

"Thus, it is more reasonable to regard these animals, in most cases at least, merely as extinct . . . known to the patriarchs as living animals but later known only by their ancient reputations." (ibid. Chapter 12, section "Dragons and Unicorns")

It may not be entirely coincidental that the oldest book in the Bible, Job, lists several mythical animals. Dated around the 1660s B.C., it was written more than two hundred years BEFORE Moses penned the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Job references five of our seven exotic beasts - dragons (Job 30:29), the behemoth (40:15), the leviathan (41:1), unicorns (39:9 - 10), and possibly the phoenix bird (29:18).

Are Dinosaurs In The Bible?

Are dinosaurs in the Bible? Are they mentioned before Adam and Eve? Were they killed by Noah's flood?

Dinosaurs are simply large reptiles, many of which are the largest known animals ever to have existed on the planet, that have lived a long time. There are at least three specific places where they may be mentioned in Scripture. One of these references in the book of Genesis. The other two possible references to dinosaurs are in the book of Job, which some commentaries state is the only Old Testament writing that possibly mentions these large reptiles (Willmington's Complete Guide to Bible Knowledge – Old Testament Survey, etc.).

Dinosaurs existed before the flood and to a lesser extent after the flood. The record found in fossils indicates that the present planetary ecosystem is incapable of producing and supporting large bodied reptiles and mammals. Apparently, before Noah's flood destroyed the antediluvian ecosystem, the earth could produce large bodied long living reptiles that we call dinosaurs (a word which means a fearful or monstrous lizard). The word of God states that not only did all humans, except eight, were destroyed by the flood, but also the earth itself was wrecked (Genesis 6:13).

The first possible mention of dinosaurs is in Job 40. God, speaking directly to the patriarch Job, challenges him regarding a mysterious beast known as the Behemoth.

15. "Now behold the behemoth, which I made along with you; he eats grass like an ox; 16. See, now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the muscles of his belly. 17. He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together. 18. His bones are like tubes of bronze; his ribs are like bars of iron." (Job 40:15 - 18, HBFV, see also verses 19 to 24)

Page 20: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

20

The Largest Dinosaurs Compared To Man

The second possible reference to huge, now extinct dinosaurs is in Job 41. God, again speaking directly to Job, challenges him regarding his ability to catch or tame a creature referred to as Leviathan.

"Can you draw out the leviathan with a hook, or hold down his tongue with a cord? Can you put a ring into his nose, or pierce his jaw with a gaff hook? . . . Will you play with him as with a bird? Or will you bind him for your maidens? . . ." (Job 41:1 - 2, 5, also see the rest of the chapter).

The third possible reference to these large reptiles is in Genesis 1:21 where it states that God created "great sea creatures." Many Scriptural scholars feel that these references are talking about the hippopotamus, crocodile, whale or other large known animal. Other scholars of a more scientific mind suggest that these verses are actually referencing dinosaurs. The literal meaning of these three references is not clear and either side may be correct. The fossil record indicates that organisms existing thousands of years ago (before Noah's flood) grew large. Examples of these are giant cave bears, giant sloths, giant dire wolves, and so on. From a biological point of view, many reptiles also have the unusual proclivity of getting larger as they age.

Will dinosaurs exist again to roam the earth when God creates a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21)? If he recreates all extinct creatures they will return. Some people have postulated that these large creatures will not be in the New Heavens and Earth because they are not mentioned as being alive during the Millennium (Jesus' reign on earth for 1,000 years). Those who make this argument forget that God's new creation will be first cleansed by fire (2Peter 3:12 - 13). There is nothing

21

in the Bible to indicate that God could not repopulate the earth with some large reptiles like dinosaurs if he desired.

Unicorns In The Bible

Unicorns are mentioned, by name, at least nine times in the King James Bible translation. They are only found in the Old Testament, with all references to unicorns derived from the Hebrew word rame (Strong's Concordance #H7214).

Some of the more interesting Bible references to unicorns include the following.

God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn . . . Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns (Numbers 23:22, KJV, Psalm 22:21)

But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil (Psalm 92:10)

Other than the Bible verses above, these mythical animals known as unicorns are found in Numbers 24:8, Deuteronomy 33:17, Job 39:9 - 12 (mentioned twice), Psalm 29:6 and Isaiah 34:7.

Unicorns were known to be strong and fierce (Numbers 23:22, 24:8, Job 39:11). They could not be trusted (Job 39:12) and were known for being untamable (Job 39:9). They were also quite agile (Psalm 29:6). They possessed at least one horn (Psalm 92:10) and quite possibly two (Deuteronomy 33:17, Psalm 22:21).

In Numbers 23:22 and 24:8 these animals symbolize the power of God to deliver his people. In Isaiah 34, they symbolized the Eternal's judgment on the world for its sins.

"Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it. For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations . . .

24

"And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood . . ." (Isaiah 34:1 - 2, 7 - 8)

Unicorn Found On The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica Of Barcelona, Spain

Unicorns can also represent the prophesied glory and power to come upon the descendants of Joseph (through his sons Ephraim and Manasseh - Deuteronomy 33:16 - 17). Many years after this prophecy was given, ten of Israel's twelve tribes were conquered by the Assyrians and taken captive.

These tribes (commonly referred to as the lost tribes of Israel) migrated to several European countries after the Babylonians conquered Assyria in 612 B.C. Ephraim migrated to what is today England. It is more than a coincidence that this legendary animal, symbol of God's special blessing, found its way into the national symbol of the United Kingdom.

What could it be?

Biblical commentaries vary widely regarding what they think is the animal referenced as unicorns is actually referencing. They state it could be an extinct wild bull called the auroch (Barnes), a rhino (Jamieson, Fausset and Brown), a wild buffalo or ox (Keil & Delitzsch), a wild goat (Wesley) or even an antelope (Bullinger's notes).

Page 25: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

25

Modern translations also vary in the way they translate the Hebrew word rame used for unicorns. For example, in Isaiah 34:7, the word is translated 'oxen' in the NCV, 'wild oxen' in the NIV, NASB and others, and 'reems' in the YLT.

Legends

One medieval legend states that the horn of unicorns, if they touch the pool the animal is drinking from, renders the waters pure and sweet. According to the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica, as late as 1789 the court ceremonial of France used instruments supposedly made from such horns for testing whether royal food contained poison (Volume 27, page 582).

When Did Dinosaurs Exist?

When did dinosaurs exist on the earth? Were they still living after God made Adam and Eve?

We know that dinosaurs existed because there is a significant amount of evidence that they did in the fossil record. One frequent question that people have is where chronologically do they fit in. If man has existed for only a relatively short time period, then how do we explain the long ages that science has assigned to these animals? Did the earliest known dinosaurs begin to appear in the Triassic period some 245 million years ago?

The typical answer to the question of when dinosaurs were made are, most times, based on misconceptions concerning the chronology as outlined in the scriptures. A common misconception is that everything that was created was made when man was formed. The Bible reveals that there was a creation prior to Adam and Eve. Even though Man was made on the sixth day of creation he was NOT the first living organism to be created! Dinosaurs almost certainly existed prior to the first human.

Although man is only a few thousand years old, the earth itself is much older. We are not sure, however, how much older because the Bible simply does not give us that type of information. The first chapter of Genesis is not an initial creation story, but a RE-creation of things that already existed. This allows for the possibility that dinosaurs may have been brought back into existence.

The Hebrew word (Strong's Concordance #H1961) from which we get the English word "was" in Genesis 1:2 should be translated as "'had become." The earth HAD BECOME (sometime after initial creation) without form and void due to Lucifer's rebellion. An example of the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 1:1 - 2 but rendered in the NKJV, NIV and other translations as "became" or "had become," can be found in the seventh verse of Genesis chapter 2.

The first two verses of Genesis 1 reveal that the earth was created with various forms of life, including dinosaurs, and then became a cosmic wasteland. After this occurred we find the earth was covered in a deep mantle of water. All life that had been originally created became extinct, including giant reptiles and dinosaurs. The earth was, as the scripture says, "without form and void." Then God recreated and refashioned the earth to support human life.

Although the Bible does not state the time span between the first two verses of Genesis 1, the earth does not necessarily have to be extremely old (and certainly was old enough to support dinosaurs). Long spans of time are generally used by those who wish to support evolution. Since evolution is not correct, large chunks of time are simply not necessary. Man's best dating methods are really only guesses since they are based on assumptions that do not take into account how earth's chaotic past has skewed their 'evidence.'God made the dinosaurs well before He made Adam and Eve. Sometime after he made them the world became a convulsing and chaotic mess due to Satan's war against the Eternal (Revelation 12:7). When the Eternal re-created all things (Genesis 1, 2) he likely brought back these large

reptiles. Evidence suggests that possibly some of these huge beasts lived for a time after Noah's flood (see our article entitled "Dinosaurs in the Bible").

Dragons In The Bible

Dragons are mentioned, directly by name, thirty-five times in the King James Bible translation. Twenty-two of these matches are in the Old Testament, of which seventeen are derived from the Hebrew word tanniyn (Strong's Concordance #H8577). The remaining thirteen mentions of dragons are in the book of Revelation and are derived from the Greek word drakon (Strong's Concordance #G1404).

Some of the more interesting Biblical references to dragons include the following.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD . . . Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? (Isaiah 51:9, KJV unless stated)

I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls (Job 30:29)

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world (Revelation 12:9)

Other than the Bible verses mentioned above, dragons can be found in Deuteronomy 32:33, Nehemiah 2:13, Psalm 44:19, Isaiah 13:22, 27:1, Jeremiah 9:11, 10:22, Revelation 12:3 - 4, 7, 13 and other places.

The Bible lists several characteristics of dragons. This beast can be poisonous (Deuteronomy 32:33) and is quite powerful (Isaiah 27:1, 51:9). It has solitary habits (Job 30:29) and can make a wailing-like sound (Micah 1:8). They apparently can live in the wilderness (Isaiah 43:20, Malachi 3:1), or deserted cities (Jeremiah 9:11) or even in water (Psalm 74:13, Isaiah 27:1). Although usually large, they can sometimes be small (Exodus 7:8 - 10).

In the New Testament, dragons were a symbol of evil and rebellion against God (Revelation 12:3 - 4, 7, 13, 16 - 17, etc.).

A Dragon Fountain In Japan

What could it be?

Biblical commentaries offer a wide variety of ideas regarding the KJV references to dragons. While some merely consign such references to mythical (imaginary) beasts, many others state they refer to jackals, hyenas, sea monsters, great fishes, whales, crocodiles or serpents (depending on the context). The problem is how could such a single Hebrew word like tanniyn refer to such a diverse set of beasts that included dragons?

Henry Morris, in his book "The Biblical Basis for Modern Science," offers an intriguing solution.

"As a matter of fact, if one will simply translate tannim (tanniyn) by "dinosaurs," every one of the more than 25 uses of the word becomes perfectly clear and appropriate. The fossil record reveals both terrestrial and marine dinosaurs, small and large dinosaurs, dinosaurs of many different characters living in different environments . . . " (Chapter 12).

Could dinosaurs have existed at the same time as humans?

"However, the evolutionary chronology is inconsistent with the Bible, as we have seen, so there is no adequate reason to question the

Page 33: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

33

contemporaneity of men and dinosaurs in the early ages of human history . . . It is significant that not only in the Bible but also in the ancient records and traditions of most of the nations of the world, tales of dragons abound" (ibid.).

God-made monsters

Incredibly, the first use of the Hebrew word tanniyn is in the book of Genesis, where God re-creates the heavens and the earth. Before the Eternal created both land-based animals and man on the sixth day (Genesis 1:26 - 27) he made on the fifth day animals that lived in water or which could fly. Some of those created were massive in size like mythical dragons.

And God created GREAT WHALES, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind . . . (Genesis 1:21).

The word translated as "whales" in the above verse is tanniyn. A better and more correct translation of Genesis 1:21 might be "And God created great DRAGONS (dinosaurs) . . ."

Animals Eating Meat

Did God originally create animals that needed to eat meat to survive? If he did not then when did this change occur?

Today there exists two major classes of animals that eat meat. The first, called omnivores (e.g. bears), live off a mix of both flesh and plant-based food sources. The second class of animals, called carnivores (e.g. lions, tigers, snakes, etc.), solely or primarily consume flesh as the main part of their diet.

Scripture clearly states that God did not require animals (and even humans) to ingest meat as part of their diets. All living things were commanded to eat only plant-based foods for their daily sustenance (Genesis 1:29 - 30).

God did not create animals to be predators and eat each other. He did not create beasts that needed to hunt down, kill, tear up and devour their fellow creatures. He brought everything into existence in a state of perfection. This perfection is based on his way of life, which is founded on selfless love for others (1John 4:8). In the Garden of Eden he states that everything brought into existence was "exceedingly good," including the animals (Genesis 1:31).

This perfection manifested itself when, before sin entered the world, Adam was blessed with the task of naming all land-based creatures including birds (Genesis 2:19). There is no indication that any lion, bear, or other present day carnivores tried to attack or kill him during this process. All life was gentle and docile.

36

Lion, Serpent, Tiger, Bear Attacking Bull Bronze Sculptures

What, then, caused a monumental change in the nature of many animals such that they added eating meat to their diet? How did creatures, originally peaceful, become predatory? Two major factors led to this radical departure from what was originally intended.

When Adam and Eve sinned by taking from the tree of good and evil, they rejected trusting in God and replaced it with believing in Satan's (and their own) deceptions. This sin brought with it manifold consequences that affected not only the physical world (e.g. animals) but also the spiritual one.

The first humans, from the moment they disobeyed, began to decline, ultimately leading to their death (Genesis 2:17, 3:3). Their sin also condemned all humans to die as well (Romans 5:12, 1Corinthians 15:21 - 22). Additionally, it introduced curses into all animals (Genesis 3:14) and even the plant world (3:17 - 19, 5:29).

Page 37: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

37

The second factor that also led to some animals (and even some plants) eating meat is Satan himself. The rebellion of our first parents allowed the devil, as a god or prince, to rule over the earth and pervert all things within it (John 12:31, 14:30, 16:11, Ephesians 2:2, 6:12, etc.). The influence of our adversary's competitive way of life, coupled with his complete willingness to kill at any time (see John 8:44, Revelation 12:1 - 4), has permeated the instinct of many living things like animals.

A Restoration of Peace

Biblical prophecies indicate that the present predatory nature of animals, and their desire to eat meat, will be removed during the millennial reign of Christ. The prophet Isaiah specifically mentions that the wolf, leopard, lion and bear will soon return to being herbivores (consuming solely plant-based food). Even humans and vipers (the KJV calls them cockatrices) will coexist in harmony (Isaiah 11:6 - 8)!

Leviathans And Behemoths In The Bible

Leviathans are found five times, by name, in four KJV translation Old Testament Bible verses. The animal is described in Job 41, Psalm 74:14, Psalm 104:26, and Isaiah 27:1. All references are derived from the Hebrew word livyathan (Strong's Concordance #H3882).

The Behemoth is found only in Job 40:15 and is described in verses 15 to 24. Its name comes from the Hebrew word spelled like its English counterpart (Strong's #H930). Of all the mythical beasts examined in this series, the characteristics of these two are discussed in greater detail than any other found in God's word.

Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? (Job 41:1, KJV)

Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat . . . (Psalm 74:14)

Behold now behemoth, which I (God) made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox . . . (Job 40:15).

In that day the LORD . . . shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent . . . (Isaiah 27:1)

Unlike Leviathans, the behemoth is a creature God himself directly names as one he made (Job 41:15). It eats grass and not meat (verses 15, 20) and is able to drink a remarkable amount of water (verse 23). Its size is huge (verse 23), having powerful legs and a belly (verse 16), and possessing bones so strong that they are likened to iron (verse 18).

The behemoth has a thick tail that it moves like a giant cedar (verse 17) and lives under shady trees (verse 21). The animal is so massive that no man can trap it (verse 24). Only God can overcome this exotic creature (verse 19).

Like the behemoth, leviathans are one of the greatest creatures ever created (Job 41:33). This fearsome, powerful animal (verses 8 - 9) is

Page 40: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

40

said to have a large tongue (Job 41:1) and a thick, impenetrable skin composed of scales (verse 7, 13, 15 - 17, 23). It is said to be quite strong (verse 12), possessing two rows of teeth (verse 13) in a jaw that cannot be forced open (verse 14).

Leviathans can look like it is breathing out fire and smoke (verses 19 - 21) and is unafraid of any man or any weapons used against it (verses 25 - 30, 33). In Psalm 74:12 - 14 this creature symbolizes Egypt, which God defeated in order to free his people. In Isaiah 26:21 - 27:1 it represents, in the end time, God's punishment for the world's sin and his judgment against evil.

41

Are they mythical?

Commentaries speculate the Biblical description of leviathans is actually referring to a crocodile or whale. Concerning the behemoth, opinion is split between referring to a hippopotamus or an elephant. The Treasury of Scriptural Knowledge, however, not only states that it would be "patently absurd" to believe this creature is a hippo or elephant, it also postulates this beast might be an extinct dinosaur.

Some commentaries are honest enough to admit that modern conclusions regarding leviathans and behemoths may be nothing more than guesses. Adam Clarke, in writing about the Biblical reference to the behemoth, states the following.

"These, having been carefully considered and deeply investigated both by critics and naturalists, have led to the conclusion that either the elephant, or the hippopotamus or river-horse, is the animal in question . . . But even here there are still some difficulties, as there are some parts of the description which do not well suit even the hippopotamus . . . " (commentary on Job 40:15).

Surprisingly, the Biblical descriptions of leviathans and behemoths better fits extinct dinosaurs than any other beast or mythical creature! Henry Morris writes the following in this regard.

"The description of behemoth seems to fit perfectly what we know about such a land dinosaur as apatosaurus, for example, and leviathan fits what we know about some large marine reptiles, such as the plesiosaur or ichthyosaur, for example . . .

"No man could trap this animal (in reference to the behemoth) . . . Every sentence is appropriate in describing such a huge dinosaur, but no other animal we are aware of, living or extinct, fits the bill." (The Biblical Basis for Modern Science, Chapter 12, section "Dragons and Unicorns")

Cockatrices In The Bible

Cockatrices are mentioned, by name, four times in the King James Bible translation. They are only found in the Old Testament and are derived from the Hebrew word tsepha (Strong's Concordance #H6848). Tsepha, found only five times in Scripture, is translated four times as cockatrices (or its singular version, see Isaiah 11:8, 14:29, 59:5, Jeremiah 8:17) and once as adder (Proverbs 23:32).

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp (in reference to the peace brought by the millennial reign of Christ), and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den (Isaiah 11:8, KJV unless stated)

They hatch cockatrice eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper (Isaiah 59:5)

For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD (Jeremiah 8:17)

Other than the Bible verses mentioned above, the mythical animal we refer to as a cockatrice is also found in Isaiah 14:29.

Cockatrices are said to live in a hole in the ground and is considered poisonous (Isaiah 11:8). It reproduces by laying eggs (Isaiah 59:5) and has a deadly bite (Jeremiah 8:17, Proverbs 23:32). Scripture is silent, however, concerning what it looked like. In myth, however, it is supposedly produced from a cock's egg and which is itself half cock and half serpent. One legend states that this creature could only be killed if it was tricked to view its own reflection.

What could it be?

The majority of commentaries believe what the KJV calls cockatrices are actually an adder or a serpent known as a basilisk. Bibles vary, however, in how they translate the Hebrew word tsepha. For example,

Page 44: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

44

Isaiah 11:8, which mentions the tsepha at the end of the sentence in the KJV, is translated as follows.

The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the VIPER'S NEST (NIV)

One Of The Fabled Cockatrices Found On The Notre Dame Cathedral

An infant will play beside the cobra's pit, and a toddler will put his hand into a SNAKE'S DEN (HCSB)

The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the VIPER'S DEN (NASB)

According to the 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, cockatrices were believed "to possess the most deadly powers, plants withering at its touch, and men and animals dying poisoned by its look." The cockatrice of Scripture might have been a venomous snake that lived in the wilderness of Sinai referred to as a fiery flying serpent.

Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent (Isaiah 14:29, KJV).

45

Satyrs In The Bible

Satyrs appear only twice in the King James translation of the Old Testament (both in the book of Isaiah). We get the name of this creature from the Hebrew word saiyr (Strong's Concordance #H8163). Saiyr is translated as 'hairy' (Genesis 27:11, 23, etc.), 'goat' (Leviticus 4:24, 9:15, etc.), a 'kid' of the goats (Genesis 37:31, Leviticus 4:23, etc.) and even 'devils' (Leviticus 17:7) in other places in Scripture.

But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there . . . and satyrs shall dance there . . . The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet . . . and the satyr shall cry to his fellow . . . (Isaiah 13:21, KJV, 34:14)

The only characteristics of Satyrs mentioned in Scripture is their ability to 'dance' (Isaiah 13, verse 21) and cry out (34:14). Some Biblical commentaries, based on the use of saiyr in other parts of God's word, believe these two verses refer either to mythological beasts or to wild or shaggy goats. Some translations of the twenty-first verse of Isaiah 13 do support the supposition that saiyr is better translated as a type of goat.

21 But desert creatures will lie there . . . and there the WILD GOATS (satyrs) will leap about (NIV)

In mythology, satyrs were half-human and half animal. They possessed the head of a man (with horns) and torso of a human but had the legs and feet of a goat.

Devils and the fall of Babylon

Evidence suggests that saiyr, used in chapters 13 and 34 of Isaiah, has a deeper meaning than merely referencing goats or even mythical satyrs. The Living Bible translation of the verses in question hints at this meaning.

Page 46: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

46

21 The wild animals of the desert will make it (ancient Babylon) their home. The houses will be haunted by howling creatures. Ostriches will live there, and THE DEMONS (saiyr) will come there to dance (Isaiah 13:21, TLB)

14 The wild animals of the desert will mingle there with wolves and hyenas . . There the NIGHT-MONSTERS will scream at each other, and THE DEMONS will come . . . (34:14, TLB)

The Pagan Goddess Venus Riding A Satyr

The immediate context of Isaiah 13:21 is God's destruction of Babylon at the hand of the Medes and his promise to make the city desolate (see 13:1 and verses 17 - 22). This chapter also presents a type or shadow of

Page 47: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

47

God's end time judgment to come upon on earth because of the Babylon-like system that will govern all humans (compare Isaiah 13:6 - 13 to Revelation 6, 8, 9, 16, 17:5, etc.). Isaiah 34 discusses God's future judgment on the entire world because of Babylon the Great (Revelation 14:8, 18:10, etc.).

God promised in Isaiah 13:20 - 22 to destroy the ancient city of Babylon to such an extent that not only would no human every live there again, it would become a place where only wild animals and demons (saiyr) reside. The fourteenth verse of Isaiah 34 alludes to the time, in the near future, where 'Babylon' will again be judged and be fit for only beasts and demons.

In Revelation 18 an angel comes down from heaven to cry out to the entire earth that Babylon the great has fallen "and is become the habitation of DEVILS" (Revelation 18:2, KJV) and of every unclean (unfit to eat) bird.

John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible explains Revelation 18:2 as 'Babylon the Great' becoming "the habitation of devils; as old Babylon was of satyrs, Isaiah 13:21 demons, which appeared in a hairy form, like goats." Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible states that this verse in Revelation is "in allusion to the common opinion that the demons inhabited abandoned cities, old ruins, and deserts . . . The language here is taken from the description of Babylon in Isaiah 13:20 - 22."

The Bible Diet

Are Bible instructions on the kinds of animals and fish God does and does not want in our diet no longer valid? Did Jesus change his Father's laws to allow us to eat pork and shrimp? Was the vision given to Peter, found in Acts 10 of the Bible, God's way of communicating a change in His will regarding our diet?

The Bible states, in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, what are God principles to be used to determine which animals are beneficial to man's diet (called 'clean' animals and seafood) and which are not (designated as 'unclean'). Those that are good and healthy to eat are referred to as clean meats. Those which were designed not be eaten, and therefore should not be included in our diet, are labeled unclean meats.

Animals that fulfill the Bible requirements to be considered clean, and therefore includable in our diet, are cattle, deer, goats and sheep to name a few. They are those beasts which possess a divided hoof and chew cud (Leviticus 11:3). Birds such as chickens, ducks, pheasants, turkeys and more can be consumed. The only insects that are permitted in the Bible for food are those of the Locust family.

Fish and other seafood that, according to the Bible, are fit for eating in our diet as they have fins and scales (Leviticus 11:9). God's designation means that fish like Tuna, Bass, Salmon, Cod, Herrings, Red Snapper, Smelt, and a whole bunch others can be safely enjoyed by humans.

Animals that are unclean and designated as bad for man's health should be avoided entirely in our diet. These include pigs, horses, rabbits, squirrels, cats, and others. Popular seafood that should not be eaten includes shrimp, lobster, catfish, squid, crabs, oysters, and others.

A common Bible verse used to support the notion that Jesus abolished his Father's laws concerning our diet is found in Mark 7. Many people take these verses to mean that eating unclean things like shrimp, pork, lobster, etc. are acceptable because Christ says they do not harm us.

54

Don't you perceive that anything that enters into a man from outside is not able to defile him? For it does not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and then passes out into the sewer, purging all food (Mark 7:18 - 19).

Is Jesus talking about the laws concerning diet found in the Bible? We find our answer in the parallel account of this event in Matthew 15. Jesus and his disciples are criticized regarding the cereemonial washing of hands. This practice is not of God, nor does the Bible command it. It is strictly a tradition of men that religious leaders falsely elevated to the status of being more important than the commandments and judgments of God (Matthew 15:10 - 11).

Christ was not teaching, in Mark 7, that God's laws regarding diet were suddenly null and void. He was discussing how human traditions can take the place of truly obeying the words of God. The physical, ritualistic traditions of men are nowhere near as important as a person's character.

Peter's Vision

Another well-worn Bible argument regarding God's approved diet revolves around the vision the Eternal gave to Peter in Acts 10. In the vision Peter sees a sheet full of many animals whose flesh was "unclean" to eat (Acts 10:11 - 12). He is three times offered the opportunity to kill and eat the animals on the sheet. His response is, "In no way, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean" (verse 14).

God's response was that what He cleansed Peter ought not to call 'common.' Does this somehow entail a new ruling by God that what he himself had designated as a proper diet for his creation was no longer valid and could be ignored? Was this rare vision given for the sole purpose of allowing church fellowships to have shrimp, pork and catfish at their potlucks? Such an interpretation would be ridiculous to Peter. He tells us, while talking to the first Gentile convert to Christianity, that the real meaning of vision had nothing to do with diet (Acts 10:28)!

In short, Peter's vision had nothing to do with changing God's commands in the Bible regarding diet or with annulling anything in his law. The vision was not God's way of communicating a change in his will, rather, it was meant to change the biased and bigoted view of Peter regarding non-Jews!

What did Paul teach?

Therefore, do not allow anyone to judge you in eating or in drinking, or with regard to a festival, or new moon, or the Sabbaths (Colossians 2:16)

Much of Christianity will tell you that the laws concerning diet, God's annual Feast Days, etc. were done away after the death of Christ. The Bible does not teach this. A review of church history shows that false teachings concerning the law, the change of Sabbath to Sunday, the change from Passover to Easter, and others were brought into the Church during the period from about 100 to 300 A.D.

The majority of believers in Colossae were, prior to their conversion, Gentiles and not Jews. They had not grown up learning about the law of

Page 56: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

56

God or trying to put in practice his commandments like someone with a Jewish background. In their lives, they had eaten all kinds of unclean animals like pork in their diet. Paul was actually teaching the church to observe the Bible laws of clean and unclean foods, to keep the Sabbath and so on!

There is absolutely no Bible basis for teaching that God's laws of clean and unclean have been abolished and therefore can be ignored in the diet of a Christian. The distinction between what is clean and unclean will still be extant in the End Time when God judges Babylon (Revelation 18:2).

The Phoenix Bird In The Bible

Although reference to the phoenix bird (also known as the firebird) does not show up by name in the KJV Bible translation, it does show up in a Jewish translation of the Old Testament. It also shows up in the Septuagint (a Greek version of the Old Testament dated to the third century B.C.), Vulgate (Latin version of Scripture compiled by Jerome in the fourth century), and some Bible commentaries for Job 29:18.

The Hebrew word khole (Strong's Concordance #H2344), translated as 'sand' in the KJV, is interpreted as referring to the phoenix bird in the Jewish Publication Society Bible and other sources.

Then I said: 'I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix;' (Job 29:18, Jewish Publication Society Bible of 1917)

Then I thought: With my nest I shall expire, And like the phoenix, have a long life (Keil and Delitzsch Commentary).

Keil and Delitzsch's Commentary justifies its translation of the phoenix (bird) in Job 29:18 as follows.

"That this bird is none other than the phoenix, is put beyond all doubt by the Midrashim (collected in the Jalkut on Job, §517) . . .

"On the contrary, we must immediately welcome a reference to the Arabico-Egyptian myth of the phoenix, that can be proved, in a book which also otherwise thoroughly blends things Egyptian with Arabian . . . " (Keil and Delitzsch Commentary, comments on Job 29:18 - 20)

Page 58: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

58

The Midrashim is an early Jewish interpretation of Biblical text. Other than possibly referring to a bird, Scripture is unfortunately silent regarding the appearance of this creature.

Mythical Phoenix Rising Out Of Its Own Ashes.

Traditions

In mythology, the phoenix is a bird that is associated with the sun and can be reborn. Every five hundred years, according to some popular legends, it dies in flames and is reborn out of its own ashes. S. Cyril of Jerusalem, a Catholic church 'father' who lived during the middle of the 4th century A.D., stated the following regarding this legendary animal.

"But the Greeks ask for a resurrection of the dead still manifest; and say that, even if these creatures are raised, yet they had not utterly mouldered away; and they require to see distinctly some creature rise again after complete decay. God knew men's unbelief, and provided for this purpose a bird, called a Phoenix . . .

"For it makes itself a coffin of frankincense and myrrh and other spices, and entering into this when its years are fulfilled, it evidently dies and

Page 59: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

59

moulders away. Then from the decayed flesh of the dead bird a worm is engendered, and this worm when grown large is transformed into a bird . . . becoming fledged and a full-grown Phoenix . . ." (Early Church Fathers: Second Series, Volume 7, Lecture XVIII).

Clement of Rome, who died around 100 A.D., is considered one of the "fathers" of what would become the Roman Catholic Church. He is possibly the first person to use the phoenix to teach Christian doctrines. He uses it, in his first Epistle to the Corinthians, as a symbol of Jesus' resurrection from the dead (History of the Christian Church, Volume 2, Clement of Rome).

According to the Talmud, the phoenix (Hol) was the only animal who refused to eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Because of its obedience, God not only allowed it to stay in the Garden of Eden but also gave it immortality.

What Does The Bible Say About Snake Handling?

Is snake handling in the Bible? My pastor told me God promised to protect Christians from such animals.

The modern version of snake (serpent) handling began as a religious ritual in the Appalachia region of the U.S. by George Hensley. He introduced the practice, based on a literal interpretation of Mark 16:17 - 18, to a Holiness movement church around 1910. Hensley became a credentialed minister of the church in 1915. After seven years of service, he left the denomination that credentialed him to form the first Pentecostal church to require ALL its members to be able to handle a snake as proof of their conversion.

Those who practice snake handling as a religious ritual believe Mark 16:18 should be interpreted literally. They view the verse as a promise from Jesus that serpents will not harm them (especially during the worship of God) because they are Christians. One of the main problems with this Biblical understanding is that the tragic history of using a poisonous snake as part of the worship of almighty God CONTRADICTS the validity of their interpretation.

Many believers have DIED while handling these venomous reptiles in a church meeting or service. George Hensley, the "father' of this practice, died from a poisonous snakebite in 1955. In 1998, an 'evangelist' who used serpents during services died from a timber rattlesnake bite. His wife had died from a bite three years earlier. In 2012, a pastor in the Pentecostal movement passed away after receiving a bite from a snake while leading an outdoor service.

In early 2014, a man named Jamie Coots, made famous through a popular cable TV show called 'Snake Salvation,' DIED from a poisonous bite. A Discovery Channel News article about his death stated those who

62

have passed away from bites received while worshipping God likely number in the hundreds.

Snake Handling At A Pentecostal Church (1946)

Mark 16 (and to a lesser extent Luke 10:19) are the only places in Scripture used to justify the handling of poisonous serpents. Jesus spoke the two verses referenced in Mark as part of his final instructions to his disciples (known as "the Great Commission") before his ascension (Mark 16:15 - 18). After giving them the authority to preach the gospel and baptize (verses 15 - 16) he states in verse 17 that "these signs shall follow those who believe." Among the signs was the inability to be harmed by a snake or poisons, and the gift of healing the sick.

Taking Mark 16:18 as the sole "proof text" that guarantees snake handling will not harm Christians, regardless of the circumstances, goes against sound Scriptural teachings that we are not to tempt God (Deuteronomy 6:16, Matthew 4:7, Luke 4:12, 1Corithinas 10:9). It is one thing to accidently encounter a poisonous reptile and be saved from

63

death (as Paul was, see Acts 28:3 - 6). It is entirely different, however, to knowingly put ourselves in harm's way such that it tempts God and his perfect love for us.

Was Eve Tempted By A Snake?

What image appears in your mind when you think of Adam and Eve being tempted in the Garden of Eden? It probably looks a little like the picture above. This engraving by Nicolai Abildgaard (1780) shows our first parents, near a tree, with a snake wrapped around it. The Biblical account states that after being deceived by God's adversary to eat the "forbidden fruit" Eve gave it to her husband who, without hesitation, ate it as well (Genesis 3:1 - 6).

Most people take for granted that a snake tempted Eve. This is due primarily to how most Bibles translate the Hebrew word Nachash (Strong's Concordance #H5175), which is used to designate the beast that led her to sin. The KJV and other versions of God's word such as the NKJV, NIV, NASB and JPS translate Nachash, found in Genesis 3, as "serpent." Other Bibles, like the CEV and TEV translations, state that Eve was lead astray by a "snake."

64

In modern English, both "snake" and "serpent" mean roughly the same thing (dictionary.com). This creature is an elongated reptile that has no limbs and possesses scales. It journeys from place to place by moving its body along the ground. This short study will show that this animal, commonly believed to be the culprit that tempted Eve and bought "the fall of man," is NOT the same one described in the Bible!

The first verse of Genesis 3 introduces to us the "serpent" (snake) allowed in the Garden the Eden with the express purpose of testing the obedience of the first humans, especially Eve.

Now the serpent (Nachash) was more cunning than any creature of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Is it true that God has said, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?'" (Genesis 3:1, HBFV)

What does Genesis reveal to us about the unique beast that Satan possessed in order to deceive Eve? Was it really a snake? A straightforward reading of Genesis 2 and 3 tells us the following about the Nachash.

It was an animal created by God (on the same day Adam and Eve were made!) that was declared "very good" (see Genesis 1:24 - 26, 3:1). It was even given a name by Adam (2:19 - 20).

It was made with a certain amount of reasoning ability ("it was more cunning than any creature . . .") that was above all other created beasts.

It could speak to Eve and had the necessary organs to allow it to do so.

It was able to walk erect and had (at the minimum) at least four limbs.

Concerning the Nachash's original traits, three popular Bible study tools state the following.

" . . . the woman (Eve) no doubt having often seen him (the Nachash) walk erect, talk, and reason, and therefore she testifies no kind of

Page 65: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

65

surprise when he accosts her in the language related in the text . . ." (Adam Clarke's Commentary on Genesis 3:1)

"If these words are not to be robbed of their entire meaning, they cannot be understood in any other way than as denoting that the form and movements of the serpent (Nachash) were altered . . ." (Keil and Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament, comments on Genesis 3:14)

"Upon thy belly shalt thou go - No longer upon feet, or half erect, but thou shalt crawl along . . ." (John Wesley's Explanatory Notes, comments on Genesis 3:14)

As the above shows, whatever the Nachash was that deceived Eve, it certainly does not qualify as a snake or serpent as we know them today!

Page 66: stevesbooks.yolasite.com€¦  · Web viewThis book is dedicated to Our Father in heaven, and to his son Jesus. Further, this manual is also dedicated to all who would like a better

66

Why not a serpent?

The 17th century Renaissance painter Rembrandt, in his above etching done in 1638, portrays a slightly more accurate Biblical scene of the temptation of man than the depiction at the top of this article. He shows an animal, with legs, tempting Eve. The animal is clearly not a snake.

So, why is the beast that tempted Eve NOT what we would call a snake? Perhaps the most compelling reason is that if it was it would mean God's curse upon the beast would be meaningless!

The creature's punishment for tempting Eve to sin was that it would be cursed above livestock and animals of the field (which all have limbs!) by having its means of transporting itself changed to crawling on its belly (Genesis 3:14). If the animal used to deceive Eve was a snake then the curse it received was redundant and meaningless, as it was already slithering on the ground to move!

It Eve was lead to sin by a snake it would also mean that the Eternal originally created a "cursed" land animal (one which had to "go upon its belly" in order to move) when he made all creatures (Genesis 1:24 - 25). This was clearly not the case, as God declared ALL animals he made were "very good" (verses 21, 25) - meaning "all livestock" and "every animal of the field" were not cursed in any way!

The beast that deceived Eve was not a snake. The Nachash Satan used had the natural ability to speak, had certain reasoning abilities, and could transport itself using its limbs. It was the perfect means (much like Judas - Luke 22:3, John 13:2) to encourage disobedience and sin in humans.

The punishment the Nachash received for telling lies to Eve dramatically changed it from a walking, talking and reasoning creature to one that slithers, hisses and has only brute instinct. As such, this animal (as initially created by the hand of God) ceased to exist.

Dragon's Well

Was there a well for dragons located in Jerusalem? Who wrote about this in the Bible?

A well for dragons is mentioned only once in the Old Testament. It is referenced by the prophet Nehemiah who was, at one time, held captive by the Persian Empire. He was released and given permission to return to Judah and rebuild Jerusalem and its walls. After arriving in the city, he toured the walls to assess their condition before reconstructing them. On his journey, he mentions something related to dragons.

And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem . . . (Nehemiah 2:13, KJV)

A direct reference to dragons in the Bible can be found in at least twenty-two places in the King James' translation of the Old Testament. Some of the more fascinating references include the following.

Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps (Deuteronomy 32:33, KJV)

I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls (Job 30:29)

Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps (Psalm 148:7, see also Isaiah 13:22, 27:1, 43:20, 51:9, etc.)

The vast majority of Old Testament references to dragons are derived from the Hebrew word tanniym (or tannim, Strong's Concordance #H8577). According to Strong's, this word can mean a jackal, serpent, sea serpent, or even a land or sea monster. This same word was used for Moses' rod that became a snake before Egypt's Pharaoh (Exodus 7:8 - 9).

The Flag Of Wales

What do we know about this well for dragons found in Nehemiah? The New Interpreter's Commentary thinks it could be another name for the natural spring named En-rogel mentioned in 1Kings1 and verse 9. The International Standard Encyclopedia thinks it was a well dug in this area. An alternative name for this particular location is jackal's well, a translation found in the New American Standard and New International Version translations.

There is another intriguing possibility to consider regarding this well. Henry Morris, in his book "The Biblical Basis for Modern Science," states that references to dragons in the Bible could actually be referring to dinosaurs.

"Unfortunately, because of the reluctance of modern translators to commit the Scriptures to teaching the existence of something they regard as purely mythical, modern versions commonly translate tannim by "jackals" or "serpents" or "sea monsters" . . .

As a matter of fact, if one will simply translate tannim by "dinosaurs," every one of the more than 25 uses of the word becomes perfectly clear . . ." (The Biblical Basis for Modern Science, Chapter 12, section "Dragons and Unicorns")

Clean And Unclean Foods

What are clean and unclean foods in the Bible? Why does it matter? How can we tell the difference between the two?

God created two basic classes of animals in relation to man's diet. Those that benefit our health are called clean foods and those that do not (they are a detriment to our health and well being) are labeled in the Bible as unclean. We find this critical information regarding which meats are good for us (clean) and which are not (unclean) in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.

In spite of what many believers think, the Bible does not, in the Old or New Testaments, abolish or do away with God's laws about foods that he created either to be eaten (clean) or avoided (unclean).

For example, in Mark 7, the dispute between the Pharisees and Christ did not concern the issue of which foods were clean or unclean. It involved whether the disciples could eat a few grains of food without having to ceremonially wash their hands several times! Peter's vision in Acts 10, commonly thought to make all unclean foods fit for consumption, was God's way of conveying to bigoted Peter that no human was worth less than others!

Paul the apostle also upheld the Biblical laws regarding what is good or clean, and what is not good or unclean, to eat as still being valid for believers (1Timothy 4:1 - 3). He showed that while some things were made for us to ingest others clearly were not.

Below is a list of common meats and fishes divided by whether the Bible considers them clean or unclean to eat. Please note that this list does not denote every animal or insect and where it is classified. When in doubt, it is best to consider a meat unfit for human consumption.

The Red Heifer

75

some religious people believe its ashes are necessary for it to operate?

The Old Testament describes an unusual ceremony that required a red heifer in order to be performed correctly. God's requirements regarding the animal, spoken to Moses and Aaron, were, "Speak to the children of Israel that they bring you a red heifer, a perfect one, in which there is no blemish, on which no yoke ever came" (Numbers 19:2, HBFV throughout).

The red heifer was to be burned completely by fire and its ashes collected and stored, "for the congregation of the children of Israel for the water of purification; it is for purifying from sin" (Numbers 19:9). The ashes of the red beast were then placed in a container where running water was put on them (verse 17) before being used by the priest.

The priest would use the mixture of red heifer ashes and water to purify, ceremonially, something that was unclean. It was primarily used to cleanse those who were exposed to a dead body (Numbers 19:11, 13). It was also used to remove ritual defilement created by taking the spoils of war.

Both those born in Israel and those who are 'strangers' in the land could participate in this purification ceremony (Numbers 15:14 - 15). Since no Biblical provision is recorded for sending either this animal's ashes or the purification water it made to other locations, the ceremony itself could only be partaken of at Jerusalem's temple.

A Cow Colored Red

What makes this ceremony unique (other than its use of a rare heifer that is born red) is that it is the only one, related to the worship of God, where blood is burned for a ceremonial purpose. In fact, the entire animal (including its dung) was commanded to be consumed by fire (Numbers 19:5). The use of an animal's ashes, as an integral part of a temple-sanctioned event, also makes this service unique.

In the Jewish Mishna (Parah 3:2) it states that children were sent to the pool of Siloam (the same place where Jesus healed a man born blind, John 9:1 - 7) to collect water for the red heifer ceremony. They traveled to and from the pool, on the back of bulls, so that they could remain unpolluted by not touching the ground. Another Jewish tradition states that Solomon's wisdom was able to help him understand all things except the meaning of this red beast.

The apostle Paul references this red animal in the book of Hebrews. He emphatically informs us that the ashes of the heifer could never purify our consciences before God. Only the blood of Christ, which makes our

forgiveness possible, can perform that monumental task (Hebrews 9:11 - 14).

Some orthodox Jews (and even some Christians) would like a temple rebuilt in Jerusalem and daily animal sacrifices established. Before this can occur, however, it is believed the ashes of a red heifer would be needed to cleanse the altar. The Bible does indicate that a third temple of some kind will be erected in the End Time. It will be used by the "abomination of desolation" (2Thessalonians 2:1 - 4) to declare he is god and therefore deserves worship (see our timeline on man's last days).

The Etymology Of Amanuensis

In Latin, the phrase “servus a manu” translates loosely as "slave with secretarial duties." (The noun “manu”, meaning "hand," gave us words such as manuscript, originally meaning a document written or typed by hand.) In the 17th century the second part of this phrase was borrowed into English to create amanuensis, a word for a person who is employed (willingly) to do the important but sometimes menial work of transcribing the words of another. While other quaint words, such as scribe or scrivener, might have similarly described the functions of such a person in the past, these days we’re likely to call him or her a secretary, or maybe an administrative assistant.
