ON THE COVER:
Some of the Seeing Eye teams you helped to create in Fiscal Year 2018. Thank you!
Thanks to you, The Seeing Eye created 252 new Seeing Eye teams in 2018. These men and women, coming from across the United States and Canada, ranging in age from teenagers to senior citizens, and with diverse occupations and interests, are now pursuing their goals with independence, dignity, and self-confidence. We hope you enjoy some of their stories contained throughout this report.

Letter from the President and CEO of The Seeing EyePhoto: This letter is accompanied by a photo of James A. Kutsch Jr., President & CEO of The Seeing Eye, and his Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Vegas.
As we close the books on 2018, we look forward to 2019 – our 90th anniversary. It also represents a personal milestone for me, as I intend to make this my final year at the helm of The Seeing Eye. I first came here as a student in 1970, then returned to serve on the Board of Trustees for 10 years. In 2006, I had the honor of being the first graduate of the program to serve as its President and CEO.
Thanks to you, The Seeing Eye has seen tremendous progress during my tenure. The Seeing Eye already was world renowned among guide dog schools, and that reputation has only been enhanced by the dedication of our staff and volunteers, excellence of our breeding program, and confidence of our graduates. Fiscal Year 2018, which runs from Oct. 1, 2017, through Sept. 30, 2018, was no exception. Your generous support helped 252 people from across the United States and Canada come to our campus in Morristown, New Jersey, and become matched with a Seeing Eye® dog; others we continued to support once they returned home with their dogs. You will find stories and photos of just a few of the people you helped this year throughout this annual report.
Highlights this year include:
Early in Fiscal Year 2018 we reached a historic milestone with the graduation of our 17,000 th Seeing Eye team. Carlos Taylor of Muncie, Indiana, was matched in November with a German shepherd named Ewok. Carlos is an adaptive computer technology specialist at Ball State University, and Ewok is his third Seeing Eye dog.
We served 252 students, received 453 applications, and accepted 272 candidates into our program. (Some candidates accepted in 2018 will attend in 2019.) We also continued our follow-up support for our approximately 1,700 actively working Seeing Eye teams, with Seeing Eye instructors conducting applicant visits and providing follow-up support to Seeing Eye graduates in 40 states, Puerto Rico, and seven Canadian provinces.
At our Chester breeding facility, 493 puppies were whelped from 69 litters, with an average litter size of 7.1 puppies. The success rate for the dogs that began the training program after returning to campus from their puppy raising families and went on to graduate from the program or entered the breeding program was approximately 70 percent, allowing us to train only the very best dogs, and to find the very best match for each of our students. We had 507 active families participating in puppy development in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and New York by providing foster homes for our puppies.
In November, the Vincent A. Stabile Canine Health Center was reaccredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. The triennial accrediting process is quite rigorous, with the center being evaluated on more than 900 standards covering all aspects of veterinary medicine.
Family Day, an annual gathering of puppy raisers and their families on The Seeing Eye campus, was attended by more than 1,150 people. There were instructor demonstrations of dog training, graduate speeches, and photo exhibits of puppies and career change dogs. Staff members also gave presentations on guide dogs in other countries, the reasons for international health regulations for traveling with animals, what life is like in The Seeing Eye kennels, and guide dogs
2
in places of business. There also were presentations from Seeing Eye graduates about the difference the dogs have made in their lives. In addition, 43 puppy raisers who were graduating from high school were awarded college scholarships.
More than 2,100 people came to The Seeing Eye campus as part of our visit program. The Seeing Eye invites the public to attend a brief tour and learn more about our organization on most Thursday mornings and one Saturday per month. For more information, go to SeeingEye.org/visit.
The Seeing Eye was again well-represented at the conferences of other blindness and guide dog organizations. Attendance provides opportunities to keep abreast of our field and share best practices. Seeing Eye staff members attended the annual Council of U.S. Dog Guide Schools in October 2017 in Rochester Hills, Michigan; the National Federation of the Blind conference in July 2018 in Orlando, Florida; the American Council of the Blind conference in June-July 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri; and the International Guide Dog Federation Conference in September 2018 in Sydney, Australia. In addition, Seeing Eye Senior Consultant for Special Projects Lukas Franck was invited to serve on IGDF’s development committee, which focuses on developing new programs in countries that do not have guide dog schools.
The Seeing Eye Orientation and Mobility Program held 14 seminars on the campuses of participating colleges and universities, including one at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Mobility specialists instruct people who are blind in how to travel safely using a long white cane. The goal of the Seeing Eye O&M Program is to give O&M students an understanding of guide dogs, so when they graduate and encounter an individual who would benefit from a guide dog, the specialist will recognize that individual’s mobility would be enhanced by the use of a guide dog. More than 160 future O&M specialists attended the seminars.
The Seeing Eye touches so many lives – it’s a magical place, not only for those who use our dogs in their daily lives, but for our staff, our puppy raisers, our volunteers, and you, our donors. You make all of this possible. From all of us, thank you.
Sincerely,
James A. Kutsch, Jr.

Letter from the Officers of The Seeing EyePhotos: This letter is accompanied by photos of the Officers of The Seeing Eye: Thomas J. Duffy, Chairman; Ari Benacerraf, Vice Chair; Margaret E. Howard, Vice Chair; and James A. Kutsch Jr., President & CEO.
Dear Friends:
The Seeing Eye celebrated a tremendous milestone in Fiscal Year 2018: The graduation of our 17,000 th Seeing Eye team. During this current year, we’re celebrating another one: Our 90 th anniversary!
What would our co-founders, Dorothy Harrison Eustis and Morris Frank, have thought about 17,000 partnerships and 90 years? They would have undoubtedly been pleased, but also amazed. The Seeing Eye story extends beyond Morristown, New Jersey, to touch tens of thousands of people across the world. Dorothy and Morris founded not just a school, but an entirely new way of thinking about people with disabilities. Morris’s tireless advocacy on behalf of equal access for people with guide dogs led to the passing of state laws around the country and ultimately the Americans with Disabilities Act. Guided by Buddy, Morris showed the world that people who are blind or have other disabilities can lead independent lives.
Each of those 17,000 partnerships came as the result of a lot of hard work. Not only by our instructors, staff, and volunteers, but by the students themselves. When you come to The Seeing Eye, we don’t just hand you a leash and say good luck. Students train here for three and a half weeks with their first Seeing Eye dog, or two and a half weeks if they’ve had one before. They learn not just how to be guided by dogs, but how to groom, feed, and care for them.
And you are with them every step of the way. Your generous donations make everything we do possible. Your support means that we will be here for our 100th anniversary, for our 20,000th Seeing Eye team, and beyond – as long as there are people who need Seeing Eye dogs.
Thank you!

Graduate StoriesInterspersed throughout this annual report are stories from people who graduated from The Seeing Eye in Fiscal Year 2018.
Carlos Taylor and Ewok
Carlos Taylor and Ewok graduated at the beginning of the fiscal year in November, becoming The Seeing Eye’s 17,000th match. Carlos, who lives in Muncie, Indiana, is an adaptive computer technology specialist at Ball State University, where he runs a computer lab dedicated to students with disabilities. He also assists students, staff, and faculty on ensuring the campus is accessible to all. He and Ewok are a familiar sight around campus.
“In harness Ewok is all business, but when it comes off, he’s very playful,” Carlos said. “He has all kinds of toys. Bones he likes to chew on, balls he likes to chase, squeaky toys he likes to squeak. On a nice day, I’ll take him out into my backyard, which is fenced in, and throw a toy and he’ll run after it and bring it back to me. He loves to run.”
Brenda Loughrey and Homer
Brenda Loughrey of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, graduated in June with her third Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Homer.
“Homer is really settling into both work and family life. When I am teaching or presenting, he’s learned to relax patiently even through a long day,” said Brenda, who teaches students with visual impairments and is an assistive technology specialist. “He’s an excellent helper since he has a gift for knowing just when my students need a break – or perhaps when I need one myself.”
She says Homer is great navigating inside schools. “I’m pretty sure he thinks the crowded hallways are games designed specifically for his benefit,” she said. “It’s beginning to really feel like that wonderful type of dance we get to do with our dogs is already happening after just six months of working together.” They also like to go “off road” on the trails that go through the fields and woods behind Brenda’s house.
“Homer, for all of his youthful exuberance, is a wonderfully sensitive and gentle dog who seems to know how to interact with people of all ages and abilities,” Brenda said. “He’ll romp with kids one moment, then lean lovingly against my 78-year-old dad to have his ears scratched the next.”
Justin Yarbrough and P.J.
“I wonder how I went without a Seeing Eye dog as long as I did,” said Justin Yarbrough of Phoenix, Arizona. Justin was in The Seeing Eye’s first class of Fiscal Year 2018, graduating in October with a black Labrador retriever named P.J.
“It’s really changed my life. Ever since I got P.J., I feel so much more confident getting out there and doing things. He’s an amazing dog. I’ve had dogs my whole life, but it’s different with him. I absolutely adore him. Our connection, our working together… it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before.”
10
Justin is a digital accessibility specialist for Rio Salado College. “P.J. makes me jealous because he’s under my desk snoring while I have to work all day,” Justin said. “He has a big ol’ dog bed and he’s pretty comfortable. Everyone here loves him. He’s like a member of the team. People say he’s my Seeing Eye dog and their therapy dog.”
When the harness comes off, Justin says, “he’s a goof.”
“He runs around the house like crazy. He’s still very much a puppy.”
Cat Higgins and Yoshi
Cat Higgins of Calgary, Alberta, graduated from The Seeing Eye in February with her first Seeing Eye dog, a German shepherd named Yoshi. At the time she was a high school senior; she’s now graduated and volunteering while deciding which college she’d like to attend.
“Yoshi does a lot for me. She gives me the courage to go out to new places on my own, without my family,” she said. “When we are on our game, I’m reminded of why I got a dog and what working a dog can really be like. We can take on anything in our path!”
She said Yoshi’s favorite play-time activity is playing ball. “She loves playing a game I call ball relay. I throw a ball and she brings it back to me, and then I throw a second ball I’ve been holding and she turns around and runs after that one.”
Yoshi does especially well in Calgary’s cold climate. “When she sees a lot of ice or snow ahead, she slows down to keep me safe,” she said. “If there’s a dry patch, she’ll adjust our course so we can get to it and then resume our usual fast pace!”
Carson Grindel and Wings
Carson Grindel of Colon, Michigan, was matched in April with a yellow Labrador/golden cross named Wings.
“I have no words. It’s been a huge change,” Carson said.
“I can just go places whenever I want. I don’t feel like I’m a burden when I go out with my friends. Sometimes I would avoid going out, because I was embarrassed. Now I can just go. Wings is the perfect name for her. I have so many people who say she’s a little angel. And I say, ‘You’re not wrong!’ “
Wings is “very, very passionate about taking naps” and also loves her stuffed bird toys, Carson said. “She has four and she loves them all.”
Carson graduated from high school in June and is planning on attending Kalamazoo Valley Community College in the fall.
Edwina Franchild and Starla
Edwina Franchild of Minneapolis, Minnesota, graduated from The Seeing Eye in November 2017 with a German shepherd named Starla, her sixth Seeing Eye dog. The photo shows Edwina laughing as Starla licks her chin.
11
"I love The Seeing Eye. I wouldn't be who I am without The Seeing Eye. It's an amazing outfit," she said.
"I'm in a part of town now where it's gotten sort of trendy, I live on what they call Eat Street. There's all kinds of restaurants and coffee shops and everything you can imagine. There's even a McDonald's," she laughed. "But getting around is not a problem with Starla. Dogs are great because they just take you around all that stuff. She loves it. We have so much fun together. You know what Cyndi Lauper says about girls? That goes for dogs, too!"
Justin Chan and Zodiak
Justin Chan of Arlington, Virginia, graduated in December with his second Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador/golden cross named Zodiak.
“He really is the best match that The Seeing Eye could have given me,” Justin said. “I asked for a dog with ‘a personality,’ and I got just that. He often likes to wake me up with kisses!”
Justin said Zodiak is a “speed demon.” “People often ask me how I walk so quickly, and it really is thanks to Zodiak. He has helped cut off almost 15 minutes from my commute! And we’re not hurrying, that’s just our pace.”
Justin, who works as a budget analyst for the federal government, said Zodiak is great at handling the busy streets of Washington, D.C. In their first year together, they’ve also visited six states, and also Niagara Falls in Canada!
“I really appreciate the work that The Seeing Eye does, and can think of no better organization to put my trust in for any of my subsequent dogs,” Justin said. “Zodiak is only my second dog from The Seeing Eye, but like my first dog Edric, he has done nothing but change my life every day, and show the world how much he loves his job.”
Nancy Clemmer and Cameo
Nancy Miloy Clemmer of Austin, Texas, graduated in May with a golden retriever named Cameo. “She loves walks to the store, traveling to new places, and hanging out at the gym,” Nancy said. “She’s excellent at finding all the different items and places in the gym as it is very large.”
Nancy said Cameo loves playing in the backyard. “She runs like a horse! She loves to chase squirrels and play fetch. And after a long day, she always insists on a massage.”
Steve Kapantais and Fritz
Steve Kapantais, Jr., came to The Seeing Eye in February to be matched with his first Seeing Eye dog, a yellow Labrador/golden cross named Fritz.
“I fly about once a month – we travel quite a bit,” said Steve, who lives in Salem, Massachusetts. “I’ve been on 10 or 12 flights with him already, all around the country and to Canada. He’s a great flier. When he’s got that harness on, he is almost perfect. Now, when he’s off harness, and it’s no longer work time, it’s a different story. He is super playful!”
12
Steve said he’s “semi-retired” but still stays busy with his work in the plastics industry. When he’s not working, he enjoys fishing, taking long walks, and playing golf.
Susan Brewer and Napa
Susan Brewer, a psychotherapist in Sacramento, California, is now working with her second Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Napa. The pair graduated in September, the final class of Fiscal Year 2018.
“Napa is awesome,” Susan said. “He impresses me every day. One of the first things that we did, when we were in training we were following two other students training with dogs. Napa stopped and he waited, and I could tell he was watching something. I asked my instructor, ‘What is he watching?’ And my instructor said, ‘He’s watching the other dogs up ahead working around an obstacle. He’s watching what they’re doing.’ I said, ‘He’s watching them so he knows how to do it!’ Sure enough that’s what he did! When it was his turn he went right around it. He is so smart!”
Napa loves to watch people cook, Susan said. “He loves to play tug-of-war with pull toys. And when it’s time to play, he’ll pick it up and bring it to me,” she said. “And I better hang on!”
Zac Robinson and Pepper
Zac Robinson of Sherwood Park, Alberta, came to The Seeing Eye in November 2017 to be matched with his first Seeing Eye dog, a black Labrador retriever named Pepper. "Pepper likes to play ball and tug of war with her rope, and to just relax in her bed," he said.
Zac is a DJ and guitarist, and also is involved with producing, mixing, and mastering music. He's also attending a school for massage therapy.

Seeing Eye Society: Rita Bergerson
Caption: Rita Bergerson and Beth Blair greet Seeing Eye puppies.
Rita Bergerson’s generous support of The Seeing Eye mission started in 2002 and has continued to grow. This year Rita not only provided a leadership match on Giving Tuesday, but also named an exercise yard in the Dr. Robert H. Harris Canine Pavilion. Both gifts, as all her gifts, were given in loving memory of her dear husband, O.H. Bergerson.
Rita has named many Seeing Eye puppies over the years and delights in receiving periodic updates about each puppy’s progress through the training program. Her philanthropic desire to support our mission is heartfelt – she is one of our best ambassadors, and frequently shares information about The Seeing Eye with relatives and friends, including Beth Blair, who came with her on a Seeing Eye visit this summer.
Rita is an extraordinary woman and a very special friend to all at The Seeing Eye, whether four-legged or two-legged.

St. Patrick’s DayThe annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Morristown, New Jersey, was held on March 10. It’s always a great opportunity for Seeing Eye puppies to meet their adoring public… and each other! In this photo, a German shepherd puppy wearing a tiny green hat and a green tutu with gold shamrocks greets a golden retriever puppy wearing a green and white shamrock bandana. There’s a bit of green fluff on the shepherd’s nose that the golden seems interested in!

Jack Humphrey Society: Gran Fondo
This story has a photo of a bicyclist laughing as he gets licked by two puppies.
32
The Seeing Eye staffed a rest stop for the eighth annual Gran Fondo NJ, an annual bike tour through the picturesque New Jersey Highlands held on September 9 with more than 2,000 registered riders. There are several courses, ranging from the 18-mile Breve to the eponymous 107-mile Gran Fondo, all featuring grueling hill climbs. This year’s ride was made even more challenging as the riders were greeted with cold steady rain. The event raises money for area non-profits, including The Seeing Eye!
In addition to the usual water and energy bars, Seeing Eye staff and volunteers also handed out freshly made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, frozen cheesecake, and chocolate-dipped cannoli! And of course there also were plenty of Seeing Eye puppies on hand to greet the riders with a refreshing lick.
33
GRADUATE SOCIETYAny Seeing Eye graduate who contributes to the annual campaign becomes a member of the Graduate Society.

Graduate Society: Douglas Newsom
“Emmett guides me through the grocery store, shops, church, the mall, everywhere,” said Douglas Newsom of Midland, Texas. Doug was matched with Emmett, a yellow Labrador/golden retriever cross, in September.
“Normal daily activities are not the only things Emmett guides me through. My wife and I have two boys who are athletes, so Emmett has guided me around football stadiums, being the line coach of my younger son’s football team, and basketball arenas all over West Texas. He will soon guide me around baseball complexes in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona!”
On Thanksgiving, Emmett guided Doug as he delivered meals to people. They’ve also gone Christmas caroling at nursing homes and to a Texas A&M football game. Doug also speaks at area schools on behalf of The Seeing Eye, and is a member of The Seeing Eye Graduate Society.
“Emmett is an absolute pleasure and has been a tremendous blessing to me and my family and friends in restoring a lot of self-dependence and freedom I felt I had lost with my vision,” Doug said.

The Dinner PartyCaption: From left, Darrell Swank, winning bidder Eleanor Campbell-Swank, and Lisa Vigod, participate in the live auction during The Dinner Party.
The Dinner Party, an annual fundraiser for The Seeing Eye, was held May 15 at the Park Savoy Estate in Florham Park, New Jersey. This year, The Dinner Party raised more than $175,000!
The Dinner Party is supported by chefs from some of New Jersey’s finest restaurants, who donate their time and resources to prepare a cocktail reception followed by a six-course meal with wine pairings for each course. Following dinner, a live auction was held with auctioneer Bob Milligan.
Preparations are underway for this year’s Dinner Party, which is scheduled to be held May 7 at Ninety Acres in Peapack, New Jersey. For more information, call Donor & Public Relations at (973) 539-4425 or email [email protected].

HERITAGE SOCIETY
This list has a photo of a man speaking to a room of people sitting in chairs. The caption reads: Lukas Franck, The Seeing Eye’s Senior Consultant, Special Projects, addresses attendees at the Heritage/Shepherd Society Luncheon, held on campus on May 24. The group was provided a glimpse of the rigor of the training program provided by The Seeing Eye to make its students confident, safe, and independent handlers of Seeing Eye dogs.
The Seeing Eye Heritage Society was established to provide for the future of the school. Members have planned gifts through their wills, through gifts that provide life income, or through gifts of life insurance or real estate.

The Seeing Eye welcomed the children of employees to campus on “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” on April 26. After hearing a welcome from Seeing Eye President & CEO Jim Kutsch, the children had presentations on how a person who is blind or visually impaired carries out every-day tasks; a presentation by a veterinary technician; a tour of the Main House, kennels, and the Vincent A. Stabile Canine Health Center; and blind fold walks with Seeing Eye dogs and instructors. The Seeing Eye also participated, through our Pennies for Puppies® and Dollars for Dogs® programs, in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day programs at other locations.

Online AuctionCaption: Ken Blazy, holding guitar, with the auction winner Mark Steinberg and friends.
The Seeing Eye held its 10th annual online auction in April, raising approximately $109,000!
Up for bid were numerous items donated by Seeing Eye supporters, plus unique experiences like going on a training walk with a Seeing Eye instructor, a private tour of The Seeing Eye’s breeding station, and more.
One such experience was a private party in Nashville with country music songwriter Kent Blazy, who co-wrote Garth Brooks’s first number one hit, “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” as well as “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘Til the Sun Comes Up),” “Somewhere Other Than the Night,” and other hits. He also co-wrote “That’s What I Get For Lovin’ You” with Diamond Rio, “Can’t Get Enough” with Patty Loveless, and “Getting’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)” with Chris Young.

Blueprint for the Future: Groundbreaking
Caption 1: Seeing Eye staff, representatives of the Golden Dome Foundation, and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith at the March 28 groundbreaking.
Caption 2: A black Labrador retriever at the groundbreaking.
Caption 3: Work continues on the pavilion, which is scheduled to be completed in spring.
The Seeing Eye’s kennel expansion project began with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 28 attended by Seeing Eye staff, dogs in training, donors, and U.S. Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey. Work got underway thanks to a generous grant from the Golden Dome Foundation, and the expanded kennel will be named the Dr. Robert H. Harris Canine Pavilion to memorialize Golden Dome’s late founder.
“I have been in awe of the work of The Seeing Eye for many years,” said Mary Ellen Harris, his widow and president of the Golden Dome Foundation. “As a dog lover I am amazed at the care the potential guides receive; from breeding to training through matching, The Seeing Eye distinguishes itself as the leader. The dogs and blind individuals with whom they are matched create extraordinary partnerships. I am pleased to be able to play a part in the continuation of this important mission.”
Work continues on the project and the kennel is slated to open on schedule this spring.

Veterinary Recognition AwardsEach year, The Seeing Eye receives nominations from our graduates and puppy raisers for our Veterinary Recognition Awards. These veterinarians, and many others who remain unnamed, have gone “above and beyond” as they provided extraordinary service and care to Seeing Eye dogs in all stages of their lives. Our puppies, our dogs-in-training, and the Seeing Eye dogs working with their owners all benefit greatly from the generosity of these veterinarians and their staffs.
This year, The Seeing Eye recognizes Debbie Chapman, D.V.M., and the staff of Desert Cross Veterinary Hospital in Thatcher, Arizona, and Tanya Miller, D.V.M., and the staff of Chambersburg Animal Hospital in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
