37. Large Tryptic Mural from Horton Chapel, Epsom.  Trustees of Horton Chapel Arts and Heritage Society would like to find a good home for this unique mural. Painted by R.A.Strand, it was commissioned by the League of Friends of Horton Hospital in 1963 and is mounted on the West Wall of the Chapel. The chapel is the former place of worship for the Epsom Mental Asylum. The central part of the design shows Christ the Healer and the figures grouped around him represent people of all races and periods. The left-hand section shows St Francis and the birds. The right-hand section depicts St Luke, "the beloved physician". As author of the Acts of the Apostles he is shown writing and the ship in the background symbolizes the voyages of St Paul and the spread of the Christian message. The painting is on canvas mounted on wooden batons with a plaster moulded surround. It is still fixed to the wall where it was first placed in the 1960's. The mural also has a brass dedication plaque.

Photos are available. We are particularly interested in finding someone who will not only take the tryptic but who is able to arrange the removal. We are a charity so any donation to our project would be gladly welcome but is not compulsory. Our main aim is for it to be removed safely

38. A large oak altar table (photographs available) was donated to St Mary’s church North Leigh by the Gask family in the 1950s.

The table was donated in memory of Mary Isabella Gask who died in 1928 and was the grandmother of Miss Mary (May) Gask, a former member of the congregation. A communion kneeler (houselling bench) was donated at the same time in memory of Miss Gask’s mother, Mary (Nancy) I. Gask, who died in 1952. The table dates from the first quarter of the 20th century. The 1984 church Terrier describes the two items as follows:“Purpose made rectangular shape with butt jointed and edged top, with dowelled mortice and tenon corner joints. This is supported by rails and four turned columnar legs, each pair terminating in a runner mounted on bun feet, joined by a rectangular stretcher with top corners cavetto moulded. Woodworm to front R.H. corner (when facing). Materials: OakDate: Second quarter 20th c.Dimensions: h.96 cm. x w. 168 cm. x d.81.5 cm.”The communion table and altar kneeler occupied the Wilcote chapel until 2000, when it was replaced by the current altar. The old table was moved to the Perrott Aisle, where it is located in the northwest corner of the Perrott aisle. It has not been used as an altar since it was moved to the Perrott aisle, but has been infrequently used as a base for displays.

The Gask family donated a communion kneeler rail along with the table. The communion kneeler (photographs available) carries the inscription “This altar was given in memory / of Mary Isabella GASK who died / January 1st 1928”.

It is not proposed to dispose of the communion kneeler, which is in regular use as a second communion point.

The PCC has written to the grandniece of Mary Gask to ask if the family would have any objection to the table being removed, and they have agreed to our proposal, but have suggested the table could be relocated to a church elsewhere if one could be found that would be interested in it. The DAC has been consulted and have agreed in principle for the table to be removed, although a faculty has not as yet been issued.

Church, MK18 1BS within Oxford DAC:

Due to remodelling of the Lady Chapel, the existing altar, tester and riddle posts are available for disposal. This is a large piece approximately 6 feet wide, by 3 feet deep and 12 feet tall to the top of the canopy.

The altar and arcaded reredos were constructed first in 1915, the Aumbry/Tabernacle canopy was added in 1925.

The altar was dedicated by Bishop Shaw in February 1916, in memoriam of Councillor JT Harrison of the Poplars, Buckingham, by his widow and family. It was designed by the architect Charles Nicholson and made with a 4-panel front in English oak with plywood infill panels.

The linen covering was homemade by Miss Norris, daughter of Canon Norris, a former Vicar at Buckingham who left to become Vicar of Witney.

Photos are available on request.
