South Derbyshire Awards 2020

The South Derbyshire Awards recognise, celebrate and thank the people who make such a difference in South Derbyshire and aim to raise aspirations and strengthen the relationships between communities, local charities and community groups and businesses. If there is an individual, team, project or organisation you think stands out, make sure they get the recognition they deserve by nominating them for an Award.

The closing date for nominations is midnight on Friday 22 November 2019. Winners will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on Friday 7 February 2020.

The South Derbyshire Awards are organised by South Derbyshire CVS and Active South Derbyshire with sponsorship from Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, South Derbyshire Partnership and the individual award category sponsors listed below.

There are 11 Award Categories:

Business of the Year sponsored by Timms SolicitorsDo you know a business who does great work in South Derbyshire? Maybe they show excellent customer service; use local produce or support the community by fundraising for charity or holding community events.

Disabled Sportsperson of the Year sponsored by Active South DerbyshireAn athlete who has shown great sportsmanship, motivation and determination in their sport. They will have displayed an outstanding level of personal achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level in the last 12 months.

Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by the South Derbyshire PartnershipThe Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates a truly special individual who has volunteered in South Derbyshire over a long period of time. Regardless of their voluntary role, they will have given much of their life, time, skills and effort to supporting their community, organisation, sport or cause and will have made a real difference over the years.

Local Charity or Voluntary Group sponsored by Mercia MarinaThis award is to recognise community groups, volunteer teams or charities in South Derbyshire who are doing great things, making a positive difference to the place they work in and the people they work with, whether it be improving people’s health, wellbeing, quality of life or bringing a much needed service to a local area.

Love Where You Live or Work sponsored by South Derbyshire District CouncilDo you know a business, a community group, person or project who has been working to improve the local environment and community, making it a safe place for everyone to enjoy? This could be by doing anything from getting their hands dirty to reduce litter, or taking part in conservation activities to running an education programme.

Sportsman of the Year (sponsor TBC)An athlete who has shown great sportsmanship, motivation and determination in their sport. They will have displayed an outstanding level of personal achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level in the last 12 months.

Sportswoman of the Year (Sponsor TBC)An athlete who has shown great sportsmanship, motivation and determination in their sport. They will have displayed an outstanding level of personal achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level in the last 12 months.

Team of the Year sponsored by Active NationThe Team of the Year Award is for South Derbyshire’s best team. Demonstrating amazing sporting ability and embodying the true spirit of team-work, this award is for the team that have put in the most inspirational performances of the year. Teams who have achieved success in their chosen sport at district, county, regional, national or international level in the past 12 months will be eligible to enter this category.

Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Clive’s CandlesThe Volunteer of the Year will be someone who has given their time, efforts and skills to volunteering in South Derbyshire over the last 12 months. Whether they inspire others to volunteer, lead a group or go that extra mile whilst volunteering behind the scenes, they will have made a meaningful contribution and their community, group or club would not be the same without them!

Young Sportsperson of the Year sponsored by the Safer South Derbyshire PartnershipAn athlete aged under 18 who has shown great sportsmanship, motivation and determination in their sport. They will have displayed an outstanding level of personal achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level in the last 12 months.

Young Volunteer of the Year sponsored by Timms SolicitorsMany young people in South Derbyshire give their free time to volunteer, whether it be for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, to help with sports clubs, community groups or other causes. This award recognises volunteers between the ages of 14-25 who have shown a real enthusiasm and commitment to volunteering.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOUTH DERBYSHIRE AWARDS: FAQs

Who can I nominate?Individuals, teams, projects or organisations in South Derbyshire, or whose work benefits South Derbyshire residents.

Who can make a nomination?As long as the person being nominated is eligible for the award we will accept nominations from anyone. You could be a staff member, service user or beneficiary, customer, local resident, funder, partner organisation or a member of the public. Tell us who you think deserves an award.

Can I nominate my own organisation, or my volunteers/team?Yes, absolutely – we would encourage you to celebrate the good work done by your organisation or volunteers!

Do I need to tell them I’m nominating them? Yes, before making a nomination please make sure that the person or organisation consents to being nominated, is happy for the information about their nomination to be made public if they are shortlisted and is able to attend the Awards Ceremony on the evening of Friday 7th February 2020.

How will you decide on the winners?A panel of sponsors will consider all the applications submitted for each category and agree a shortlist. Winners for each category will then be chosen from the shortlist and announced at the Awards Ceremony, where they will be presented with a trophy. We will make our decision based purely on the information you provide in your form – so please tell us as much as you can about your nominee and why they deserve an award. The panel may use their discretion to place nominees in the most appropriate category.

What if I’m shortlisted?Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at Toyota’s Burnaston Hall on Friday 7th February. There will be a buffet supper and entertainment before the winners are announced and presented with their trophies. The other shortlisted nominees will be presented with Runner-up Certificates. Please make sure your nominee, or someone to represent them, will be available to attend.

What about those who are not shortlisted?We expect to receive lots of nominations, so not everyone will get a prize. However we will write to everyone nominated to let them know they were put forward and to acknowledge their contribution and success.

How do I make a nomination?Please complete a separate form for each person, team or organisation you want to nominate. Please complete all questions to submit a valid nomination. What will happen to the information on your form?Details of your nomination will be shared with our Award partners and sponsors, who will form a panel to decide the shortlist and winners. The name and details of those shortlisted (but not their contact details) will also be made public when the shortlist is announced – so please make sure they know you are nominating them and are happy for what you tell us on the form to be shared publicly.
