Whiton Winner Gazette Curriculum: Reading : The Whiton Winners have learned all about what it means to be real readers! We talked about metacognition and what happens when our brains and books collide….BAM! We created many “reading salads” (combination of text and thinking) by reading the powerful picture books, Thank You Mr. Falker , The Junkyard Wonders , and The Name Jar . The children had powerful connections, noticings, and wonderings, as I read these stories aloud. We are now working in collaborative groups, developing reading letters using metacognition thinking stems based off a picture book we read the first week of school. We will be publishing these letters using Word and presenting these letters to the class. We also learned all about schema or background knowledge and how it increases a reader’s chances for a meaningful connection with the text! Math: We are finishing up Unit 1, which is a review of numbers and number sequences, equivalent names, finding differences, and number patterns. We are spending some extra time on making change and money. This is a great skill to practice with your child at home! Next up, Unit 2... Adding & Subtracting Whole Numbers. There are many great apps out there (as well as flash cards) to practice basic math facts (addition and subtraction) to become quick fact masters!

Writing: We have already starting filling up our Writer’s Notebooks. We published and shared Bio Poems and Heart Maps proudly displayed in our hallway. Each of these pieces detail our hobbies, passions, favorites, families, and special memories. We learned all about the capitalization acronym MINTS~ which stands for months, the letter I, names, titles, and starts of sentences. We also learned all about the Power of three and adding three powerful details to our writing…. strong verbs, proper nouns, and awesome adjectives as examples.
