I visited an exhibition at the Llewellyn Gallery called Cross-Wired, A Synthesis of
Paper and Digital Art on May 30, 2015. Paper and digital art play a huge role with
each other. The basics of hand made art make digital art that much greater
aesthetically. I’m not saying it’s impossible, just greater. In the real world jobs,
concepts and storyboards are done and redone all over again before a final piece is
actually made. As artists, we need to learn to be content with putting full heart into
an idea or storyboard and then having to completely do something new. The three-
dimensional buildings have depth to them. The character running and falling
visually fakes the eye to look like movement. The line weight and organic aspect of
the symbols are aesthetically pleasing.
With this particular exhibition, the buildings, characters and symbols of the games
were made from paper art. Being able to see the paper art of what was actually in
the game gave it that much more value. This ties into Interactive Design because
students actually had to incorporate every class they have taken as a Digital Media
and Animation thus far and apply it into this project; that includes basic drawing
skills, hands on work, digital work, videography and of course coding. Two things I
took away from this exhibition; first, the amazement of how they coded it and
second concept art, ideas and more concept art. Don’t be afraid to work, fail, enjoy
and re-work.
