Reading Workshop

In Reading Workshop we have continued to learn about main idea. The kids were struggling at first to figure out the difference between a main idea and details, but we did some activities this week where are they were starting to understand the strategy. I wanted to make sure that the students got a good introduction to it, and hopefully a seed was planted to help them along in upper grades.

Words Their WayWe did a review on the long e this week. We went over –

ee, -ea, and –ey words this week. It was nice to see the kids find words that contained long e to add to the chart all week. We have been studying penguins, so they added the word seal.

Writing WorkshopWe are in full swing with our All About books. I decided to

change the topic from penguins to all about their family. The kids have a lot of schema about you all, so they are having fun writing about all of you. We are still learning about penguins which has been a lot of fun, so the kids are getting that research piece a long with writing about something they enjoy a little more than penguins.

This and ThatThere are so many exciting

things ahead for the students to learn about. We are going to get into character traits in Reading Workshop, and I love the books that go along with teaching that.

We also have President’s Day coming up, and it is so fun to learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I love to see the students faces when they find out about George Washington’s teeth or why Abraham Lincoln wore a tall hat!

The month of February is also Black History Month, and we will learn about famous African Americans and the many accomplishments and inventions that were made.

The Valentine’s Day Party is coming up as well as Family Fun Night. I know some parents are busy at work coming up with ideas for a basket.

MathWe are winding down in Unit 4. This unit contains

nonstandard measurement, and there isn’t really anything on IXL that ties in with this. I started introducing adding three numbers at the same time. The strategy that the kids learned was to make circles or pictures to help them count. The kids will take their Unit 4 test sometime next week. A study guide will come home as usual.

Science/Social StudiesWe are continuing to study penguins. We learned what

penguins eat, where they live, and who their predators are. We will be learning about specific penguins next week.

We also celebrated the 100th day of school. I recently found out that it would be more fitting to celebrate the 120th day of school since first graders need to know how to count to 120 by the end of the year! We may have a mini celebration then.

Thursday was Groundhog’s Day, so the kids also saw the celebration on YouTube. I can’t believe 6 more weeks of winter.
