Lesson Plan 2 Grade Level: Third Unit/Subject: Cursive Handwriting Lesson title: Learning cursive writing and lowercase letters – Part 1 Learning Standards: RF1: There is not a grade 3 standard for this concept. Pre-requisite Skills: Knowledge of the letters of the alphabet. Reading and writing in manuscript. If students were taught cursive in second grade, encourage them to use what they know or remember. Learning Targets: Student will be able to write the lowercase letters; i, t, u, w, e. Students will be able to recognize the letters i, t, u, w, e in cursive. Students will be able to relate images to the letters presented in cursive writing. Assessment Strategies: Teacher will assess student learning on the progress of what students have completed in their writing workbooks. Teacher will explain that there are four basic strokes used in forming cursive letters. Undercurve, downcurve, overcurve, slant

Teacher will tell students that today is the first day of our cursive writing unit and we will learn how to write five lowercase cursive letters.

Sequence of Instruction:

Teacher will show students that an undercurve stroke swings up, demonstrating this on the board.

Teacher will have students open up their workbooks to the basic strokes undercurve. Students will practice making an undercurve while teacher walks around and provides assistance.

Teacher will show students that a downcurve stroke dives down, demonstrating this on the board.

Teacher will have students open up their workbooks to the basic strokes downcurve. Students will practice making an downcurve while teacher walks around and provides assistance.

Teacher will show students that an overcurve stroke bounces up, demonstrating this on the board.

Teacher will have students open up their workbooks to the basic strokes overcurve. Students will practice making an overcurve while teacher walks around and provides assistance.

Teacher will show students that an slant stroke slides, demonstrating this on the board.

Teacher will have students open up their workbooks to the basic strokes slant. Students will practice making a slant while teacher walks around and provides assistance.

TASK: Follow task guidelines for letters, i, for letters t, u, w, e as well.

Students will learn lowercase letters with an undercurve.

For letter i: Teacher will ask students how many undercurve strokes are in letter i?For letter t: Teacher will ask students what stroke follows the slant in the letter t?For letter u: Teacher will ask students how does the letter u end?For letter w: Teacher will ask students how is letter w like letter u?For letter e: Teacher will ask students what curve the letter e starts with?

Teacher will demonstrate writing the letter i, t, u, w, e. on the board while saying the stroke description. (One at a time)Students will practice writing the letter i, t, u, w, e, on their white boards. (One at time)

Students will begin to work on workbook pages writing the lowercase letters i, t, u, w, e.Closure:

Students will meet on the rug for a closing meeting.

Teacher will display pictures that start with the cursive letters i, t, u, w, e.

i: igloot: trucku: unicornw: waterfalle: elephant

Teachers will have students come up and match the cursive letter to the picture that starts with that letter.
