OBI EE Brief Description

Oracle Business Intelligence is a Business Intelligence tool helping decision makers to analyze enterprise data and take right decisions. It is composed by 2 main components:

OBI Server OBI Presentation Server

OBI Server is the core server behind Oracle Business Intelligence Solution. It provides the power behind Intelligent Dashboards (web-displayed Reports) for access and analysis of structured data. It allows a single information request (for reports for example) to query multiple data source.

OBI Presentation Server is the core server behind HTML pages viewed by users. It provides the formatting and presentation of Intelligent Dashboards (web-displayed Reports). OBI presents a lot of reports (table, chart, pivot and so on …) to web users.

What’s new?

New Additional Installer Features

The following bullets list changes in this new version (10.1.3.3) since the old one (version 7.8.2.5 and 10.1.3.2):

OBI Installer installs OBI Publisher, which provides advanced reporting capabilities

OBI Installer can now perform 2 different installation types(Basic and Advanced)

New Installation Types provided by OBI Installer

During installation, you will be asked to choose a type of installation. The selection you will make is only based on the type of web server on which OBI will be deployed.

Basic Installation Type = the web server is a J2EE Application Server

Advanced Installation Type = the web server is Oracle Application Server

The following are the Basic Installation type requirements and actions:

Requires J2SE 5.0 (other name of 1.5)Provides a choice to deploy the Presentation services and plug-in in Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J)Installs demonstration application that includes a repository, presentation catalog and XML data source

The following are the Advanced Installation type requirements and actions:

You plan to link OBI with Oracle Single Sign-on (OSSO or OAID)Provides a choice to deploy the Presentation services and plug-in in Oracle Application ServerInstalls demonstration application that includes a repository, presentation catalog and XML data source

Running “check script” to verify all pre requisites

“UnixChk.sh” is a script for UNIX-based installations (including Linux). In order to make sure that the installation machine has all the necessary requirements for a successful installation, run this UNIX check script to check the prerequisites. The script is lightweight and easy to use, and checks for the following conditions:

■ Supported operating system■ required patches and file sets (if applicable)■ Supported configurations■ Adequate disk space■ User is not root

The UnixChk.sh script is installed in two locations:

The installer directory containing setup.sh and setup.jar. From here, you can run UnixChk.sh before running the installer (that is, before running setup.sh)

The directory OracleBI/setup/UnixChk.sh. From here, you can run UnixChk.sh after installing Oracle BI

Usage:

UnixChk.sh [Oracle_BI_install_dir]

where Oracle_BI_install_dir is the directory in which Oracle BI is to be installed. Omit this argument if Oracle BI is to be installed in the default installation directory (/usr/local/OracleBI).

Hereafter, the procedure to execute script checking all pre requisites

ATTENTION: It is a very important step; since after running this script, you will be sure that your platform is “ready” for OBI EE installation. Not running this check script is bound to drive you to a very risky installation in term of installation success.

Configuring OBI Installation

Start/Stop Oracle BI Components

Oracle BI uses shell scripts to set environment variables and run specific component shell commands. These scripts provide for the basic setup of UNIX systems. These scripts are located in the directory OracleBI_HOME/setup.

The following tables are summarizing the 2 main commands to start/stop Oracle BI components:

Main Oracle BI Configuration files

Initialization automatically updates the component configuration files after installation for the default, out of the box configuration. Upon start-up, Oracle Business Intelligence uses initialization files to set parameters.

There is one main configuration file for Oracle BI server and another one for Oracle Presentation server:

Presentation Server Configuration

Configuration settings for the Oracle BI Presentation Services are made in the fileinstanceconfig.xml, located in the directory OracleBIData_HOME\web\config.

You can customize the Presentation Server by modifying the entries in “instanceconfig.xml” and adding new entries to override internal default settings. You need to make changes to instanceconfig.xml only if you want to change default parameters, such as the name of the Presentation Server Catalog, or override internal default settings, such as the time for client connections to expire.

Analytics Server Configuration

The Oracle Business Intelligence Server software uses an initialization file named NQSConfig.INI to set parameters upon startup. This file includes parameters to customize behavior based on the requirements of each individual installation.

Configuring HTTP Web Server

A default pre-packaged WebARchive (WAR) file, analytics.war, is included with the Oracle BI Presentation Services installation, located as shown in the following table.

However, if you modify the web.xml file (for example, to reconfigure the Web server location and listening port), then you should recreate the analytics.war file. This task uses the jar utility included in the Java JDK 1.5 package (found in the <JAVA_HOME>/bin directory).

This procedure uses the following file locations and commands:
