“Do the Write Thing” Challenge

This writing project provides middle school students all across America with an opportunity to examine the impact of violence on their lives and communicate in writing what they can personally do to stop violence. Participating students are eligible to receive local and national recognition. Two students will be selected as Ambassador’s from Palm Beach County to travel to Washington, D.C. this summer with a parent/guardian, their principal and a teacher. All flights and lodging expenses will be paid by the Program. In addition, the program will host a Recognition Luncheon at the South Florida Fairgrounds to honor the “Top 10” entries of each participating Middle School as determined by the Principal. The event is free. The event for 2020 is TBA.

P rogram Rules

These rules apply to every Palm Beach County Middle School participating in the Challenge:

1. Student entries, at minimum, should address three questions:

How has violence affected my life? What are the causes of youth violence? What can I do about youth violence?

All writings should address these questions to advance in the selection process. This is NOT a creative writing project. Students should address the questions honestly and should not invent situations.

2. Students may use any form of written expression (e.g. essays, poems, plays or songs) as long as the language is positive and not derogatory. Students may submit only one entry per year. Each entry must be the exclusive work product of only one student. Entries should be approximately 500 to 1000 words in length. Written forms of expression such as poetry that are shorter by their nature may contain fewer than 500 words.

3. Entries must either be typed (preferred) or they may be handwritten legibly in black ink on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Only one side of the paper may be used, and all pages should provide the name of the student as well as page numbers.

4. Entries must be in English.

5. If the student participant uses a quotation or another person's material in his or her entry, the entry must identify whose work is being used by citing the person's name or citing the source of the material. Writings based upon plagiarism will NOT be advanced in the judging process.

6. Each entry must be firmly stapled to a "Cover Sheet" with the consent statement signed by the participating student and a parent or guardian. Entries without a signed Cover Sheet will NOT advance in the judging process. Just as importantly, entries without a cover sheet do not count for purposes of determining full participation by the school. The Cover Sheet should be photocopied and distributed by the teachers with the program rules. Cover Sheets will be given out after the year starts by the SS Teacher. This is due to the SS teacher at Omni within the 1st two week of school.

7. Entries must be submitted in the form that they are received from the student writer. Everybody who makes a good-faith effort to participate is eligible for recognition as a Top 10 student. However, this rule does not preclude teachers from using the submission as a graded project or school assignment School credit, if any, is given at the discretion of the teacher.

Welcome to 6th Grade!

We are looking forward to a great year! Incoming Advanced and Gifted 6th graders are required to read The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Here is a brief synopsis of the novel as posted on Common Sense Media:

The ad in the newspaper says, "Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?" Reynie, an orphan, decides that he is, and persuades the orphanage director to let him take the test. Along with three other children who pass, Reynie meets the mysterious Mr. Benedict, a narcoleptic who lives behind a maze and who has

an important mission for the children. They're sent to a boarding school on an island, The Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened, to find out all they can about the school's director, Ledroptha Curtain. Posing as students, they discover his plan to take over the world using mind control. But in Curtain's carefully controlled island fortress, stopping him seems impossible, even for four very gifted children.

After reading the novel, please complete any three of the activities on the following choice board. These are due Monday, August 19, 2019. Detailed rubrics follow the assignment.

This novel correlates with our first unit on the theme of Fear and we will be discussing the novel in depth during the first couple weeks of school. Additional projects related to the novel will also be assigned when school resumes.

If you would like to read another novel for extra credit, please read Breakout by Kate Messner and complete any one activity from the choice board.
