1957 U. S. S. SHANGRI-LA CVA-38 1957 Jan. 1 - The stars are shining bright, in Kobe tonight. They look like angels, all dancing and live, and even more so, tied starboard side to pier five. As we sit here in peace with the rest of the world so troubled, we are securely tied, with our mooring lines doubled. I can see it’s a new year as I look at the clock, and we’re still receiving phone service and fresh water from the dock. Tis getting late and SOPA should be coming soon, you know, he’s our CO, but he’s probably celebrating and won’t be back til noon. We brought some friends to help celebrate our new year’s ball, just look for DESDIV 132 and you’ll find the O’BRIEN, WALKE, HUBBARD and SMALL. The gasoline system is all secure, this will cause no fires, that’s for sure. Well, the time for my relief is getting near, so I’ll wish one and all a Happy New Year! B. W. 1. Chaplain NOCE Is Treated At Yoko Hospital. The quick quipping Chaplain of 38 is presently amusing the Yokosuka Hospital staff. CDR William S. NOCE, the ship’s Protestant leader, was placed in the hospital on February 1 by CVA-38's doctor for treatment and diagnosis of what appears to be an infected kidney. According to sick bay, he should be back aboard in two weeks. His internment was not of an emergency nature, as he had been under observation for some time. The Chaplain, who has been with SHANGRI-LA since the ship’s departure from the States, came as a mild shock to the crew. He is not the dour sort of person usually associated with men in his station, but is instead a man who is willing to swap stories with anyone, anywhere. Chaplain NOCE soon won the confidence of the crew by becoming one of them, at the same time earning and keeping their respect. His interests vary from high-fidelity to cameras and he can talk on a diversified range of subjects. Chaplain NOCE’s six o’clock at-sea news broadcasts are ardently listened to and his Sunday services are well attended.

2. CVA-38 Moves Closer Towards “E”. Carrier Air Group Two’s aircraft, in connection with SHANGRI-LA’s Fleet competitive exercises, staged a successful simulated attack on USS BENNINGTON (CVA-20) Wednesday thus pushing “38" a few steps closer to the big “E”. Taking off from the ship at 1300, the CAG-2 planes had to first find BENNINGTON before they could attack. This was all part of a game in which the planes from each carrier had to seek out and attack the opposing ship. At 1410 the CAG-2 planes found the opposing ship and encountered their first bit of action when they fought with a destroyer guarding the carrier. Following a brief battle with the destroyer, LT J. MEALY led an AD Skyraider team in the first hit on BENNINGTON. CDR J. BOWEN then led another group of ADs that completely knocked out the carrier’s flight deck. LT MEALY again took the spotlight later in the exercise when he intercepted a garbled message of one of BENNINGTON’s pilots who had discovered the position of “38" and was attempting to radio his discovery back to his ship. General Quarters, refuelings, man overboard, casualty power rigging, precision anchoring and a fire drill highlighted other exercises during the week. At the rate the ship is completing these competitive drills, they should all be over when the ship reaches Subic Bay.

3. Cruise Book Sales Nears 2,000 Mark. Almost 2,000 copies of SHANGRI-LA’s 56-57 cruise book have been sold thus far, with several divisions and squadrons proudly boasting 100% purchases and better. A portion of the cruise book is already at the printers in Tokyo. Within the black padded leatherette cover, which has the SHANGRI-LA design of white and gold on it, the book will contain 300 pages of memorable moments from the time the ship arrived stateside last June through our future departure from Japan terminating our second Far Eastern cruise. Twenty eight color pages, 20 pages with names and hometowns of all crewmembers, group photos of divisions and squadrons, and on-the-job pics will be included. If a crewmember’s photo isn’t in the book, he either came aboard in April or was hiding from the photographer in the ship’s double bottoms. Many pics of liberty highlights submitted by the crew will be used; and, by the way, a call is still out for more pics from the shutterbugs. Those who have not bought a cruise book and are interested in doing so, should take $2.00 to their division

chief petty officer in charge of the sales. He’ll take the order and in return give a receipt to purchasing personnel. Officers not assigned a division and are wishing to buy a book, should see LTJG Edwin C. DUERR. Crewmembers, who for some will be leaving the ship before dispersion of the books in May, can order from their division representative. The price is $2.00 plus a $.50 mailing fee. Divisions and squadrons that have reached 100% or higher are 6th, W, N, D, S-4, V-4, V-6, VA-65, VF-24, GMGRU-1 and VFP-61.

April 5th issue:

1. Ship In Hong Kong; Two Months - Then Home. With the majority of her second Far East cruise now a matter of historical fact, SHANGRI-LA sits peacefully in Hong Kong harbor. PacTraEx, that grueling three-week plus exercise, the largest the ship has ever participated in, is over and only a few more competitive exercises and about ten days of air operations remain before CVA-38 turns for home in less than two months. Last week’s highlight came March 29, when SHANGRI-LA replenished from five ships. Large working parties toiled from early morning until the dark of night loading the various supplies. First ship alongside was HASSAYAMPA, from which the carrier refueled. From VESUVIUS came ammo and the ship received commissary stores from ZELIMA. Aviation supplies were sent over from JUPITER, and closing cut the day’s activities, ship’s store and GSK stores were received from POLLUX. The ship will remain in Hong Kong until the 11th, going out to sea with a new Executive Officer, CDR Grayston H. WEBER, and enough privately purchased merchandise to stock a large store.

2. Four Saltier Men Return After Two Weeks On DD. Four men returned to SHANGRI-LA March 28 and 29, after trying destroyer life for two weeks and finding it wanting. “I can sum it all up in a few words,” says teleman chief Leon T. WILEY. “Why travel tourist when you can go first class?” The remainder of the quartet unanimously support these sentiments, although they are quick to point out they received the ultimate in cooperation, and that BAUSSELL (DD-845) has a fine skipper, a fine crew, a fine laundry and adequate medical facilities. Their exodus began March 15 after CVA-38 sustained a crypto casualty while acting as communication guard for COMSEVENTHFLT. LTJG James W. SHARP went over by helicopter to investigate the DD’s crypto capacities. He found them sufficient and sent for the others, (CPO WILEY, LTJG Carl W. SPITZER and RM2 Frank J. JOHNSON) who then sallied over by highline with one change of clothes anticipating a short stay. Their short stay turned into a guest cruise after BAUSSELL was detached from a complement of ships, including SHANGRI-LA, which was heading for Manila Bay for President MAGSAYSAY’s funeral. A HORNET plane had gone down and the DD was sent to search for it. CPO WILEY, who served on a destroyer 14 years ago, became seasick for the first time in his Naval career the first day away from home. LTJG SHARP also made an unsteady, but hurried, trip to the rail. Johnson, who was on a can for three months in 1943, interesting on the whole even though he had his trials. He was hit in

Page 99: navydocuments.togetherweserved.comnavydocuments.togetherweserved.com/NTWS-242481-1942.doc · Web viewSep. 2 - Resting on keel blocks as before in Drydock 4, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,

the ear by a flying file drawer and found the chow lacking in variety, although very well prepared. He soon grew weary of carrots daily and having to hold onto something every time he wanted to walk somewhere on the ship, but he was amused by “the Coke machine that wouldn’t quit.” LTJG SPITZER came through the ordeal in capital shape. He had taken a Midshipman cruise on a DD during his Naval Academy days and the tribulations seemed old hat. CPO WILEY soon knew the 11 CPO’s aboard. They ate in a small mess space with only two tables directly adjoining their berthing compartment. The CPO’s stood JOOD watches. Finally, on March 28, arrangements were made for LTJG SPITZER and JOHNSON to return to what the BAUSSELL’s crew refers to as “floating shore duty.” While being hoisted to the helo on the fantail, JOHNSON was smacked in the eye by part of the sling. LTJG SHARP also had difficulties boarding the helo the next day. He attached the sling around his body and suddenly the DD pitched from beneath him, leaving his legs dangling hopelessly in the air. The can came up again, and LTJG SHARP went sprawling on the wet deck. He suffered no injuries, but a certain loss of dignity. Both officers were presented with red rag medals by Communications Officer LCDR JACKA in an auspicious wardroom ceremony, March 30. Attached to the bottom of the cloth was a picture of a destroyer with a bolt of purple lightning darting through it. Each also received a cookie bag and they stood humbly by as CDR L. V. SWANSON, 38's Executive Officer, read a citation entitled, “Ordo Omnium Qui Panem Eorum In Aquis Ponunt.” This means ‘Order of Those Who Cast Their Bread Upon The Waters.’

3. Silver Star Winner Once PFC, Now CAPT. CAPT WINDSOR, who strums the base fiddle and guitar with the same adroitness he triggers an M-1 Rifle, is one leatherneck who has come a long way since his boot camp days at Paris Island, S. C. The calm amiable features of the popular Marine Captain would never betray the fact that he the owner of three purple hearts and a Silver Star. He earned his medals with the 1st Marine Division during their epic ‘advance to the rear’, when hoards of Chinese Communists came crashing over the Yalu River from Manchuria. The outnumbered Marine division was soon completely surrounded, and on October 3, 1950, the Peking radio announced, “the annihilation of the United States 1st Marine Division is only a matter of time. With their backs to the wall, the leathernecks began fighting their way to the sea, bringing their wounded and equipment. CAPT WINDSOR’s valor came to the surface when he, with several other Marines, slipped into enemy territory to rescue some of their wounded buddies, who had been dropped by Chinese Communist guns during a rapid withdrawal to safer ground. Cautiously the leathernecks made their way over the snow toward the wounded men. Suddenly a voice broke the silent night, querying “who’s there”, in very good English. The Captain, then a gunnery Sgt., immediately replied “the gunny.” He realized his mistake when a Chinese hurled a grenade at him from an approximate 20 yard distance. The shrapnel smashed his rifle and toppled him to the ground. However, he gained his feet and hurried to the side of a wounded comrade and began to pull him to safety. The unsatisfied Chinese threw a second and the leatherneck again tumbled to the snow and again he reached his feet. A third grenade, and a third time he struggled to his feet and continued to pursue his

mission. A fourth grenade and for the fourth time he regained his feet only to be dropped by a burst of machine gun fire. This time he was unable to move. For sixteen hours CAPT WINDSOR lay very still in his snowy bed confident that his Marine buddies would return for him. He narrowly missed death once when a Chinese stepped on his chest and arm and bayoneted the Marine lying beside him. An artillery barrage and a few napalm bombs from some ADs scattered the enemy long enough for the Captain’s rescue. Weeks later he underwent four operations in a Navy hospital and yet has two to go. A total of 237 holes were counted in his parka coat and 32 pieces of shrapnel and two bullet holes were found in him. The Captain not only proved himself outstanding on the Korean battleground, but also displayed a unique military aptitude by graduating first in a class of 1,005 2nd LTs at basic school, Quantico, VA. In doing this he set an all time high at the school with a 98.2 average. When selected for his present rank, CAPT WINDSOR was placed number one on the list of 460 candidates from his zone, which means that he is the senior man to all his contemporaries picked for captaincy at this time. An original SHANGRI-LA plankowner, the Captain, who has been Executive Officer of the Marine Detachment since February of 1955, will be saying “au revoir” to the ship very soon. He will proceed to his old unit, the 1st Marine Division, at Camp Pendleton, CA.

4. Pri-Fly Has Last Word In Launching, Landing Aircraft. In the upper reaches of SHANGRI-LA’s island structure, sits CDR R. G. RANDAL, Air Department boss, enclosed by a communications network that could very well be the envy of Bell Telephone Co. Immediately behind him are five sound powered phone talkers, who receive and relay messages with a rapidity and accuracy that is a trademark of the well-trained. The flight and hangar decks air ops, the ready rooms, Bridge, Flight Deck Control, and DCC are just a few of the places that this group of men must have a communications hook-up with during air operations. Technically speaking, this is Primary Flight Control, however, the Pri-Fly boys refer to it as the ‘Ivory Tower.’ Primary Flight Control is the central point by which all SHANGRI-LA aircraft are launched and recovered. In other words, it serves much the same purpose as an airfield’s control tower; but as CDR RANDAL points out, “We are somewhat more limited than an airfield in that we have only one runway and we must make our own wind.” Their job actually commences with the launching of planes and doesn’t cease until the last plane is home and put to bed. When launching a plane, Pri-Fly’s first task is to inform the catapult crew on wind velocity so proper adjustment of the cats can be made to meet air speed requirements. After the cats have been readied, Pri-Fly is contacted and CDR RANDAL then signals the Catapult Officer by semaphore or sound powered phone to make the launch. Normally all planes are launched with three seconds of their scheduled take-off, which is proof of the precise coordination involved during flight operations. Once a plane become airborne, Air Operations takes over, and Pri-Fly repeats the cycle with the next launch. Landing aircraft aboard SHANGRI-LA’s weaving, bobbing deck is also a delicately timed process. From the time the plane begins to form its landing pattern until it is safely home, CDR RANDAL has to contact the pilot, arresting gear crew for proper setting, make a rapid and correct observation

Page 101: navydocuments.togetherweserved.comnavydocuments.togetherweserved.com/NTWS-242481-1942.doc · Web viewSep. 2 - Resting on keel blocks as before in Drydock 4, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,

for a fouled flight deck and informed the LSO to signal in the plane or wave him off. A total of ten enlisted men, eight of V-6 and two of V-2, are in the Pri-Fly gang. However only five men work with CDR RANDAL at one time. These men must be on the proverbial ball. There’s no room for mistakes.

5. CWO RUSSELL, A Credit To Service, Country. SHANGRI-LA pilots owe a daily debt of gratitude to Chief Aviation Operations Technician Everett B. RUSSELL, for the Flight Deck Bos’n has been in some degree instrumental in the designing and testing of safety equipment now used by these pilots as a matter of second nature. The parachute strapped on their backs, in all probability, could have been at one time tested in one of CWO RUSSELL’s 149 experimental jumps. The oxygen they breathe while flying is flowing into their systems in just the right amount through the courtesy of the same man. He wrote the Bureau of Aeronautics Maintenance Manual for 02 regulator repair. He also set up the liquid oxygen course at Parachute Rigger’s school, Lakehurst, NJ. In the not too distant future, every pilot, regardless of his branch of service, will be obligated to CWO RUSSELL for his part in the development of the Omni-Environment Full Pressure Suit. Now that planes are scraping the stratosphere, pilots face the danger of having their body fluids vaporize at altitudes over 63,000 feet. The new flight suit will automatically keep the flyer at pressure equal to 35,000 feet in case of loss of cabin pressure, or if the pilot has to eject. The suit will be maintained in the Navy by parachute riggers who have been taught the methods in a course written and established by CWO RUSSELL. He also designed test equipment used in calibrating the suit control system. The first notable event in his Naval career occurred in 1937 when CWO RUSSELL, then a seaman, was serving on LEXINGTON (CV-2), one of the four aircraft carriers then in the fleet. That was the year aviatrix Amelia Earhart flew into nowhere and LEXINGTON went searching for her. He became an aviation machinist mate first class, switched over to parachute rigger and advanced to CPO in that rate before becoming a Warrant Officer. He made the 10,000 th jump at Lakehurst’s school, but most of his jumps were at Naval Parachute Unit, El Centro, CA. There he helped develop the conical and automatic opening chutes now coming into general use. The latter device once caused him trouble when he was force to manually open the chute after 6,000 feet waiting for it to open by itself. The automatic mechanism broke loose, slapped him in the face and he landed groggy, bloody but unbowed. CWO RUSSELL has jumped from just about anything that can get off the ground, including blimps and helos. He was the first man to jump from an S2F, the combat version of the plane that brings the ship its mail. CWO RUSSELL’s shipboard job, which he has held since September 1955, is to handle the Flight Deck repair parties and to clear the deck in case a plane should crash. CWO RUSSELL will return to his wife and two children who live in Bayville, NJ when he retires after 20 years of interesting service next July 1. If he puts as much into civilian life as he did into the Navy, he should be a roaring success there also.

June 21st issue:1. Date Set For SHANGRI-LA To Enter PSNS Dry Dock. SHANGRI-LA will enter the

Page 102: navydocuments.togetherweserved.comnavydocuments.togetherweserved.com/NTWS-242481-1942.doc · Web viewSep. 2 - Resting on keel blocks as before in Drydock 4, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,

third week of her four month overhaul period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard tomorrow when she moves into dry dock #4 at approximately 2:00 p.m. Her dry dock is located at the head of the pier where she is now moored. A general overhaul of machinery, boilers, catapults, radar, ordnance, and auxiliaries will be conducted during this period to improve and restore the ship’s materiel condition and her equipment. According to LCDR J. B. SHUMATE, Damage Control Assistant, some of the reasons for the yard period are: First, it is a routine check and overhaul; Second, it prepares the ship to meet operating commitments in the future; Third, it is designed to bring the ship up to the most efficient operating status with allocated funds. He reports most of the paperwork has been accomplished since the yard period began, June 12, 1957. Arrival conferences have been completed, and yard work orders have been processed and is issued to the cognizant departments. Supplementary repair requests have been submitted to cover additional work. General maintenance, cutting out boiler tubes, removing bricks from boilers, and ship’s force work has already commenced. Some of the major jobs to be accomplished are: overhaul, rebrick, and renew tubes in boilers; install a portable deck mirror landing system; install a non-skid covering on the Hangar Deck; overhaul and repair firemains and valves; make catapult repairs and alterations. Designers and planners will outline the work to be accomplished. These highly skilled PSNS workers along with many other yard workers will play an important part in the overhaul. Shop numbers X11 and X26 will do the structural work such as burning and welding. X56 will take care of pipe work, X51 the electrical, X31 and X38 the machinery repair, X41 the boilers, X72 the riggers and laborers and X71 will be doing the painting. Mr. SHUMATE says each department and its spaces will be affected by the overhaul in some way, and that it is an all hands project. There will be inspections of Shipyard work, fire watches, ship force work, chipping and painting, and work engineering-wise that cannot be done safely when the ship is operating. All hands should be alert to prevent accidents and fires and report unsafe practices and conditions.

2. 307 CORAL SEA Men Now TAD To “38". Since SHANGRI-LA’s arrival in Bremerton, she’s become a temporary haven for some 370 (sic) homeless sailors from the decommissioned CORAL SEA. The men will remain aboard for approximately two months before reporting to Recommissioning School at San Diego. Upon completion of school they will return to Bremerton, to make their new home aboard MIDWAY which is due out of the yards in late November. During their stay aboard SHANGRI-LA they will work in their prospective jobs, most of which are in the engineering ratings. CORAL SEA left the east coast on March 5 and went “around the Horn” on March 17, officially making her a west coast carrier. She is now in the yards to receive her angled deck and modernization overhaul.

3. Another First - CVA-38 Sets New Record. A new replenishment record has been established by SHANGRI-LA and VEGA, according to a recent report by Commander Service Squadron Three. In his report to COMSERVPAC pertaining to Pacific Fleet underway replenishment problems, RADM E. B. MCKINNEY commented, “Commander

Page 103: navydocuments.togetherweserved.comnavydocuments.togetherweserved.com/NTWS-242481-1942.doc · Web viewSep. 2 - Resting on keel blocks as before in Drydock 4, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard,

1957

Service Squadron Three takes great pleasure in commending VEGA for her outstanding performance in setting what appears to be a new record in transferring 138 short tons of provisions to SHANGRI-LA in 38 minutes. These congratulations are also extended to SHANGRI-LA, for the close cooperation and teamwork of the receiving ship is equally important in the attainment of such transfer rates. This performance serves as an example of what can be accomplished when the team is properly organized, trained, and working together. “Well Done.” The replenishment referred to was made off Subic Bay in March. The Commanding Officer of VEGA also commented in the report that the excellent station-keeping of SHANGRI-LA contributed largely to the transfer rate of 218.7 tons per hour. It is expected that this record will be broken during “38's” next deployment using improved replenishment rigging being installed during the current overhaul period.

4. CAT Hides Billfold. Untold treasures may be recovered from unlikely places aboard ship during the yard period. Louis F. DETRIENNE, shipfitter from Shop 11, recovered a billfold from a catapult today belonging to Wilbert ALLEN, AN, of V-3.

5. Photo Caption: Three Puget Sound Naval Shipyard workers are engaged in overhaul on SHANGRI-LA’s steam catapults. This is one of the major jobs to be accomplished during the ship’s four-month yard period.

August 30th issue:

1. Yard Work 56% Completed With Eight Weeks To Go. Latest reports show that percentage wise, SHANGRI-LA is 56% completed with her scheduled four month overhaul period with about eight weeks of work remaining. LCDR James SHUMATE, Damage Control Assistant, with a note of confidence in his voice, states, “All work has been progressing satisfactorily for both the ship and yard gang. Everything has been going according to schedule.” The Engineering Assistant further points out that in September a number of tests will be conducted in order to determine the material readiness of the ship. At 0800 on September 7, the ship’s water tight integrity will be checked. At this time, water will be admitted into the dry dock. After all watertight fittings have been checked, the ship will leave her dry resting place. One of the ship’s eight boilers will be lighted off September 9 marking the first time since June 12 that one of the boilers has been in operation. Undergoing an estimated $200,000 overhaul job, the boilers’ revamping work will consist of renewal of eight complete superheaters; installation of new firebrick in all furnaces; acrid cleaning of all internal fittings and burners; and modification of casing panels. Among the new additions to grace SHANGRI-LA upon departure from the yard, will be four UHF Sector Array antennae. The antennae, two on the ship’s bow and stern, will promote better ship to plane radio transmission by eliminating blind spots encountered by low flying planes.2. Bing Visits Ship Friday With Miss Bremerton 1957. SHANGRI-LA was part of a grand tour arranged by the Bremerton Chamber of Commerce for Bing CROSBY last Friday (Aug. 23). Der Bingle came aboard close to 4 p.m. accompanied by Marcia

HUNTER, Miss Bremerton of 1957; her father, Mr. Bruce HUNTER , a Bremerton businessman and Mr. Hal FISCHLER, Bremerton Chamber of Commerce President and host for the trio. Shipboard guide for the group was CAPT F. D. FOLEY, “38's” C.O. He showed them the forward elevator, gas stations, flight deck and steam catapults, explaining the functions of each. The Old Groaner, a Washington native, first met Miss HUNTER at Seattle’s Seafair, where she was an entry in that event’s beauty contest. At he request, he promised her he would pay a call to Bremerton, and this visit was the fulfillment of that promise. “Gary COOPER would have a heck of a time here,” joshed Bing, straightening up after walking through SHANGRI-LA’s pipe-heavy passageways. His visit lasted one hour.

3. Marine Take Over Gun Mounts 55, 57 of Sector 3. The ship’s Marines, who manned the only 3 inch gun mount to win an ‘E’ on the past cruise, will have a whole new gun mount sector to themselves on the forthcoming cruise. Sector 3, which includes 5 inch gun mounts 55 and 57, will be their new air defense station. During the past cruise the Marines were scattered among the various ship’s gun sectors with mount 35 the only exclusive Marine gun mount. With sector 3, however, the entire Marine Detachment is needed to operate the two gun mounts. CAPT Hugh R. BUMPAS, Marine Detachment C.O., will be Sector Control Officer while 1st LT Donald G. BISHOP, Detachment Executive Officer, will act as Director Officer. The move was necessitated by the fact that through orders received from the Bureau of Ordnance, all 3 inch guns have been removed from the ship. In connection with Marines’ gun shift, 1st LT BISHOP has received TAD orders to report on September 3rd to Fleet Gunnery School, U. S. Naval Station, San Diego for training. Next cruise’s gunnery exercises will be held on a competitive basis between the ship’s gunnery divisions and 1st LT Bishops feels certain that his Marines will take top honors. “We’ll beat their pants off,” he warns.

4. First In History: Hands-Off Carrier Landing. A pilot, for the first time in history, landed his plane on a carrier deck without touching his controls. The landing was made in the first sea trials of the Bell Automatic Landing System. In the tests, an F3D Skyknight jet made about 20 landing aboard the carrier ANTIETAM off Pensacola, FL. Six times in a one day demonstration and F3D flew through an invisible radar gate, which directed the plane to four perfect touch-and-go and two arrested landings on the canted-deck carrier. Highly mobile, the aircraft landing system works on a combination radio and radar system. Radar locates the plane and determines its altitude and position to the ship landing deck. This data is then fed into an electronic computer, which transmits necessary course corrections to another device which directs the aircraft into a perfect flight path landing. After passing through the radar gate, actually an area where the radio-radar locks on the plane, the pilot takes his hands off the controls and waits for the electronic brain to land him. If the plane is not in the best landing position, the aircraft landing system automatically sends it around for another try. Still in the research and development stage, the system is presently housed in a trailer truck on the flight deck. The Navy said it is working on plans now to build the system directly into a carrier. If the system successfully passes future tests, the device could be operational within five years. Already a veteran in land tests, the system has made about 50 carrier landings, about 20 of which were fully arrested.
