Teenager Grace Karemera lives in Rwanda in Africa. Grace wanted to tell the world about the gorillas in her country. First, she spoke to experts to learn more about these animals. Then, she decided to make a video.

Rwanda is home to the mountain gorilla, the largest and rarest gorilla in the world. In Africa today, there are only 720 mountain gorillas. Once, there were many more. But people are killing adult gorillas, taking their babies and selling them to zoos. People are also cutting down trees in the rainforests, so the gorillas lose their homes. Grace put all this information in her video. She also spoke about the importance of the gorillas for Rwanda’s tourism.

In September 2008, Grace went to New York for a special meeting – the Kids Gorilla Summit. Experts spoke about the problems of the mountain gorillas and Grace showed them her video. The people at the meeting all wanted to help. Some of the students had good ideas. One student wanted to write about the gorillas in his school newspaper. Another student had a clever idea – to put video cameras in the forest to film the gorillas and their way of life, for everyone to see. They all wanted to prevent people from killing these extraordinary animals, to stop people cutting down trees, and to save the gorillas’ habitat.

While she was visiting New York, Grace and other teenagers met with the former President Bill Clinton. He told the teenagers to continue working together to save the gorillas.
