Invocation

PIn the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CAmen.

PsalmPsalm 51:1-19; antiphon v. 17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Have mercy on me, O God,

according to your steadfast love;

according to your abundant mercy

blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin!

For I know my transgressions,

and my sin is ever before me.

Against you, you only, have I sinned

and done what is evil in your sight,

so that you may be justified in your words

and blameless in your judgment.

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being,

and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness;

let the bones that you have broken rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins,

and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from your presence,

and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways,

and sinners will return to you.

Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God,

O God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

O Lord, open my lips,

and my mouth will declare your praise.

For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;

you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;

build up the walls of Jerusalem;

then will you delight in right sacrifices,

in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;

then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning,

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

P Dear brothers and sisters of our Lord Jesus Christ, God created us to experience joy in communion with Him, to love all humanity, and to live harmony with all of His creation. But sin separates us from God, our neighbors, and creation, and so we do not enjoy the life our Creator intended for us. Also, by our sin we grieve our Father, who does not desire us to come under His judgment, but to turn to Him and live.

On this day the Church begins a holy season of prayerful and penitential reflection. Our attention is especially directed to the holy sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. From ancient times the season of Lent has been kept as a time of special devotion, self-denial, and humble repentance born of a faithful heart that dwells confidently on His Word and draws from it life and hope.

As disciples of the Lord Jesus we are called to struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor. We wage spiritual warfare through repentance and additional Lenten disciplines of fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and works of love.

I invite you, therefore, to commit yourselves to this struggle and confess your sins, asking our Father for strength to persevere in you in every hour and in Lenten discipline. Let us pray that our dear Father in heaven, for the sake of His beloved Son and in the power of His Holy Spirit, might richly bless this Lententide for us so that we may come to Easter with glad hearts and keep the feast in sincerity and truth.

Silence for reflection.

We take time for meditation and self-examination considering both things done and things left undone, what we have committed and what we have omitted, and especially recognizing the real source from which all our sins flow: the rebellious and unreformable sinful nature within each person

+CONFESSION OF SINS+

PMost holy and merciful Father:

CWe confess to You and to one another, and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth, that we are by fallen nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against you by our own fault in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

PWe have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.

CHave mercy on us, O Lord.

PWe have been deaf to your call to serve as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved Your Holy Spirit.

CHave mercy on us, O Lord.

PWe confess to You, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness. The pride, hypocrisy,

and impatience in our love,

Cwe confess to you, O Lord.

POur self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people,

Cwe confess to you, O Lord.

POur anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those we regard as more fortunate than ourselves,

Cwe confess to you, O Lord.

POur intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts and our dishonesty in daily life and work,

Cwe confess to you, O Lord.

POur negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,

Cwe confess to you, O Lord.

PFor the wrongs we have done, for our blindness to human need and suffering, and for our indifference to injustice and cruelty,

Caccept our repentance, O Lord.

PFor all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors,

and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us,

Caccept our repentance, O Lord.

PFor our insensitivity to the needs of your Church, and for our unwillingness to bear the crosses which you have given us as Christians and as a congregation,

Caccept our repentance, O Lord.

PRestore us, good Lord, and let Your anger depart from us.

CHear us, O Lord, for Your mercy is great.

PAlmighty God, You have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by Your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Savior.

CAmen.

+IMPOSITION OF ASHES+

Sit

As a confession of sins, all who are baptized may come forward to receive this sign of our death to sin. If you desire to receive ashes, please approach the altar in the same manner as for Holy Communion. Upon receiving the ashes, return to your seats and meditate silently on the words which are said as they are imposed; “Remember, O Man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return.”

Address for Imposition of Ashes

ARemember, O Man, that thou are dust, and to dust thou shalt return.

After receiving the ashes, each person returns to his place in silence.

PAccomplish in us, O God, the work of your salvation,

Cthat we may show forth in the world Your glory in the cross of our

Lord Jesus Christ.

PBy the cross and Passion of Your Son, our Lord,

Cbring us with all Your saints to the joy of his resurrection.

PAlmighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, does not desire the death of sinners, but rather that they turn from their wickedness and live. Therefore we implore Him to have compassion on the frailty of our mortal nature, for we acknowledge that we are dust and to dust we shall return. We pray that He would mercifully pardon our sins that we may obtain the promises He has laid up for those who are repentant, that those things may please Him which we do on this day, that the rest of our life may be pure and holy, and that at the last we may come to His eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

CAmen.

PIn the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit,

CAmen.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

PLet us pray.

CAlmighty and everlasting God, You despise nothing You have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create in us new and contrite hearts that lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness we may receive from You full pardon and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament ReadingJoel 2:12–19

12“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,“return to me with all your heart,with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;13and rend your hearts and not your garments.”Return to the Lord, your God,for he is gracious and merciful,slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love;and he relents over disaster.14Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,and leave a blessing behind him,a grain offering and a drink offeringfor the Lord your God?15Blow the trumpet in Zion;consecrate a fast;call a solemn assembly;16gather the people.Consecrate the congregation;assemble the elders;gather the children,even nursing infants.Let the bridegroom leave his room,and the bride her chamber.17Between the vestibule and the altarlet the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weepand say, “Spare your people, O Lord,and make not your heritage a reproach,a byword among the nations.Why should they say among the peoples,‘Where is their God?’”

18Then the Lord became jealous for his landand had pity on his people.19The Lord answered and said to his people,“Behold, I am sending to yougrain, wine, and oil,and you will be satisfied;and I will no more make youa reproach among the nations.”

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

GradualPsalm 57:1a, 3a

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,*for in you my soul takes refuge.He will send from heaven and save me;*he will put to shame him who tramples on me.

Epistle2 Peter 1:2–11

2May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

3His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. 10Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

TractPsalm 103:10; 79:8a, 9a

He does not deal with us according to our sins,*nor repay us according to our iniquities.Do not remember against us our former iniquities;*let your compassion come speedily to meet us.Help us, O God of our salvation,*for the glory of your name.

Holy GospelMatthew 6:16–21

PThe Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixth chapter.

16[Jesus said:] “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

19“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Nicene Creed

CI believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

The Words of Our LordLSB 197

POur Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Midweek Lent Services and Soup Suppers: Our theme for Lent this year is “The Lord’s Prayer.” Throughout the season of Lent we will learn how the Lord’s Prayer is beautifully connected with our Lord’s death on the cross and His resurrection. Each Wednesday we will have a soup supper at 5:30 p.m. and a Vespers service at 7:00 p.m.

New Black Paraments and Vestment: We recently consecrated (set aside for a holy purpose) new paraments which were donated in memory of +Marlene Kamrath+. These black paraments are used on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. They visually help us to contemplate our own mortality and the death of our Savior. The Frontals for our altar depict Jesus’ crown of thorns, the nails of His cross, three drops of His blood, and the initialism INRI. INRI represents the Latin inscription Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum as it was written and hung on Jesus’ cross. In English it translates to "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” (John 19).  The Fall for our lectern/pulpit depicts a communion wafer and a chalice bearing the blood of Christ shed for you. The stole for our pastor is worn as a yoke, indicating that he serves as a shepherd in the office of the holy ministry. One side of this stole depicts the scourge used to flog Jesus, three red nails from His crucifixion wounds, the hyssop branch extended to Him with sponge of sour wine, and the sword which pierced His side. The cross on which He died is flanked with Α and Ω, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. This title, used in the book of Revelation, proclaims that Jesus Christ is our beginning and our end. The other side of pastor’s stole is topped with a cross adorned with a white shroud. This is the same cross you will find on our white paraments which we use on Easter and All Saints Day. From the cross, drops of Christ’s red blood fall to the Chalice which stands beside a communion wafer, the gifts of Christ’s last will and testament.
