1. The AAP now states that children should ride rear-facing for as long as possible past 2 years old. Yet, some convertible car seats still have low rear-facing weight limits that don’t support rear-facing for some children. Should state laws be amended to ensure every parent buys a car seat so their children can ride rear-facing past 2 years old? Or should car seat manufacturers be forced to manufacture convertible seats with higher rear-facing limits?

2. In 2018, Sweden, which has historically had a very low rate of traffic fatalities over the past decade, experienced more traffic fatalities than any year since 2009. What could account for the rise in 2018 deaths? Also, what is Sweden doing right in terms of car safety, and how could the US implement those positive changes?

3. According to a recent article on CNN, over 38 kids die every year from being left in their infant car seats in a hot car. A few new laws have been introduced that will require car manufacturers to include rear-seat alerts in all new vehicles. Some have already begun to do so. But should car seat manufacturers also be required to include alarms on their car seats? 

4. Distracted driving accounted for over 3,000 US deaths in 2017, most of which were caused by cell phone usage. Despite laws against using mobile phones while driving and insurance incentives for good driving, this number is steadily increasing. Mobile technology isn’t going away, so what else can we do to prevent distracted driving accidents?

5.    Stricter car seat laws in some states are requiring kids shorter than 4 feet 9 inches to ride in a booster seat. This will require many middle schoolers to remain in boosters. However, many kids don’t want to be seen in a “baby seat” at that age, so parents don’t make them ride in boosters that long. How could booster seat design change to be more appealing to middle schoolers?

2019-20 Real Estate Education Advancement Fund Scholarships

The Foundation for California Community Colleges is pleased to announce the availability of 2019-20 Real Estate Education Advancement Scholarships for California Community College students. These awards are available for students in good academic standing who need financial assistance to help afford enrollment costs in community college real estate education programs.

Eligibility: • Must be pursuing either a major in Real Estate or, if a Real Estate major isn’t offered by their college, a major in Business Administration with a concentration in Real Estate. • Must have completed at least one college-level real estate course with a grade of C or better (2.0). • Can be full-time or part-time. • Must demonstrate financial need.

Award amounts: • $600 max per semester or quarter. • $1,200 max per academic year. • The total amount available for scholarships is limited to the amount of interest income generated by the Real Estate Education Advancement Fund. It is estimated that approximately $54,000 will be available for 2019-20, which will fund approximately 60-75 scholarships statewide.

Distribution: The campus Financial Aid Director or Scholarship Coordinator will determine student eligibility and initiate award funding after the student submits the Real Estate Scholarship Application.

Selection criteria: Scholarship selection criteria has remained unchanged and includes low- income/disadvantaged status, GPA , and declared interest in real estate as a career path. Specific eligibility criteria are delineated in the Real Estate Education Scholarship Guidelines.

Application period: September 1, 2019 – April 30, 2020.

Submission process: Students must submit their application to their college’s Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will determine eligibility and forward the Real Estate Scholarship Invoice to the Foundation’s office. All materials must be received by May 1, 2020. The scholarship application, letter of recommendation, and academic transcript documenting grades and current/completed courses must be retained in college files for each scholarship recipient. A checklist is available online. Once eligibility is verified, schools must submit the Real Estate Invoice to the Foundation’s office on or before the deadline date. Upon receipt of these documents, the Foundation’s Accounts Payable department will process the invoice for payment within four to six weeks after receipt.

Invoices must be received by May 1, 2020—but due to the limited funding available, please anticipate funding to be exhausted much earlier. Scholarships will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

PV Historical Society ScholarshipThe Stan Daily Scholarship Award is offered to a student living in the Pleasant Valley are, including Camarillo, Somis and Santa Rosa Valley.
