Blessed are you who fear the Lord.— Psalm 128:1a

SHARING OUR GIFTSAutumn is the season for harvesting

and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week’s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone.

In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns?

Question of the WeekHow am I investing those talents entrusted to me by the Master?

Pastor’s Note

33rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeNovember 19, 2017 Year A

A Reckless Trust

Many sermons on this parable focus on the three servants given certain number of talents. However, I will focus my attention on the master who I suppose is God. God is generous, extravagant giver of all good gifts but plain as the nose on your face, God is like this reckless prodigal master who dares trust us with “his property.” Three servants were given gifts, two of them passed the test but one, however, is a play-it-safe guy who dug a hole both for the talent and himself. What does this story tell us? It tells us how much God believes in us. In life, we know that some handles leadership better than others. Some find their best gifts as followers. This parable invites us to look at ourselves as made in the image of God, blessed by God, family, friends, community, and faith with abilities, tendencies, gifts, and struggles. Our generous and reckless, loving God longs to awaken in us the uniqueness God has placed in every human life that breathes on this planet. God believes in us so much God sent His Only Son to be our Savior. It is this lavish, all-in, giving God whose heart of love long to bind us to Himself if we will simply see how much God entrusts to us every good and perfect gift. The air we breathe, the food we eat, the relationships in the family and the community we enjoy, the gifts we have-

gifts as multicolored as the rainbow---all bespeak our ties to this One who gives all. Do we use the given gifts of the Lord, to befriend others, to help others, and improve our relationships with God who is the owner of all that we have? You tell me!

Arnold Helping HandsWe want to thank many parishioners who generously contribute their time, talent and treasure to Our Lady of the Sierra Helping Hands program. We are open every Tuesday (weather permitting) 9:30am to 10:00am. We serve several homeless individuals, many families, and seniors from our food pantry. We also have a closet with clothes for infants, children of all sizes and adults (men and women) of all sizes. We gratefully accept donations of non-perishable foods (especially cereal and peanut butter), personal items, and cleaning products.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONEarlier this autumn, we looked at how

our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard prayers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions).

We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source

for these two prayers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the “Holy Year” of 1975. Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today’s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconciliation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were published, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never formally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal.
