What inspiration for the present can we draw from old texts? How can ancient ideas help us to be better prepared for the future? What, if anything, has the clash of ideas in the Dutch Golden Age to do with the confusion holding modern Western societies in their grip? Geert Mak, one of the Low Countries’ most famous literary writers, will reveal his views on the matter in Leuven on April 28th, at 5 pm on the occasion of the LECTIO Chair 2020. De groeten van Jan Six! 

Een zeventiende-eeuwse Amsterdammer, verdwaald in nieuwe tijden.

Jan Six, een vooraanstaande Amsterdamse patriciër, stond bekend als vriend van Rembrandt, vooruitstrevend denker, boekenliefhebber, toneelschrijver en groot kunstkenner. Tegelijkertijd was hij politicus, uiteindelijk zelfs burgermeester. Maar wat er werkelijk in zijn hoofd omging bleef verborgen. Hij noteerde die gedachten wel, soms bijna dagelijks, in een paar enorme folianten die nog steeds bewaard worden in het archief van de familie Six. Wat blijkt dan, als je zijn ontwikkeling, week na week, volgt? Hoe verliep met name zijn worsteling met  de nieuwe vormen van denken - Descartes, Spinoza - die langzaam zijn wereld binnendrongen? Hoe stond hij, als doorsnee 17e eeuwer, tegenover de grote paradigma wisselingen van zijn tijd? En kunnen we iets van zijn zoektocht  herkennen in onze snel verschuivende tijd,  vierhonderd jaar later?

Boekvoorstelling Gerd Van Riel, “Geluk” (Leuven, 4 February 2020) (Dutch event)

Waaruit bestaat geluk eigenlijk? Hoe belangrijk is geluk? Kunnen we geluk bereiken en zo ja, hoe? Sinds de oudheid denken filosofen na over geluk. Vandaag lijkt het leven van velen beheerst te worden door de zoektocht naar geluk en ontwikkelden ook wetenschappers theorieën over het geluk. Gerd Van Riel (DWMC) gaat, in dialoog met Jelle Van Riet, op zoek naar wat mensen gelukkig maakt en tracht een ruimere interpretatie te bieden op basis van de bestaande theorieën. Muziek wordt verzorgd door Stoomboot.

WGL-boekvoorstelling “Aristoteles Latinus” (Leuven, 11 February 2020) (Dutch event)

Tijdens deze boekvoorstelling van het Wijsgerig Gezelschap Leuven (WGL) staat het prestigieuze Aristoteles Latinusproject centraal. Verschillende onderzoekers van het HIW, tevens verbonden aan LECTIO, gaan op basis van recent werk een gesprek aan over het uitgeven van middeleeuwse teksten, de zin en het proces van het editeren zelf en het fenomeen fysiognomonie.

Sprekers: Pieter Adriaens, Pieter Beullens, Lisa Devriese, Jan Opsomer, Carlos Steel.

Lecture Anne-Laurence Caudano, “A Two-Storied Universe: Human Conditions and Progress in Kosmas Indikopleustes’ Christian Topography” (Leuven, 14 February 2020)

Within the framework of the C1 project “Longing for Perfection”, Anne-Laurence Caudano (University of Winnipeg) will give a lecture on “A Two-Storied Universe: Human Conditions and Progress in Kosmas Indikopleustes’ Christian Topography.” The lecture is open to all interested.

UCL Honorary Doctor 2020: Nuccio Ordine (Louvain-la-Neuve, 4 February 2020)

Among this year’s Honorary Doctors of the Université Catholique de Louvain is Nuccio Ordine, professor of literature at the University of Calabria. An expert in the history of ideas, his credo is “L’utilité de l’inutilité. Soit faire ou apprendre, juste pour le plaisir. Sans objectif derrière: c’est le plaisir qui nous permet de devenir meilleurs.”

Lecture “Tyrannies et cruautés (Anvers, 1579). De la dénonciation de la colonisation à la défense du protestantisme” (Liège, 19 February 2020)

Annick Delfosse (ULiège) will give a lecture on the use – and misuse – by different political and religious parties of the famous writing “Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias” of Bartolomeo de La Casas.

Summer school “Medieval Latin Lexicography (application deadline: 15 March 2020)

The Mittellateinisches Wörterbuch Institute (MLW) invites applications for its Medieval Latin Lexicography Summer School, which will take place in Munich from 3-7 August 2020. All researchers with good knowledge of Latin whose work engages especially with Medieval Latin vocabulary, at any stage of their studies or career can participate.

CFP Conference International Machiavelli Society (submission deadline: 29 February 2020)

The International Machiavelli Society welcomes abstracts on any aspects of Machiavelli’s thought, its sources, and its legacy for its inaugural conference that will be hosted by Università Roma Tre, December 16th to December 19th, 2020. Andrea Robiglio (DWMC) will give one of the plenary lectures.

CFP Conference “Old Books and New Technologies” (submission deadline: 1 April 2020)

On 29 and 30 October 2020, KBR, in partnership with the Campus Condorcet of Paris, the National Library of Luxembourg, the KB national library of the Netherlands, the universities of Ghent, Leuven, Liège, Mons and Namur, and the Vlaamse Erfgoedbibliotheken, will be holding an international conference on medieval books and the digital humanities in the Low Countries. It will bring together representatives from libraries, museums, archives with researchers interested in the ‘medieval book  and new technologies’.

CFP Series “Sources in Early Modern Economics, Ethics, and Law”

This series publishes original English translations and editions of early modern religious texts in the disciplines of economics, ethics, and law. In the modern era these disciplines often have been detached from the religious and theological context in which they developed. This series seeks to uncover the early modern religious foundations and contexts of these and related disciplines and to provide access to previously inaccessible texts that will contribute to interdisciplinary research.

Survey “Research Needs for Data through Digitisation” (KU Leuven staff only)

Research Data Management (RDM) focuses on the way research data are managed, from the point of creation or collection, to the moment they are published and possibly preserved for the long term. In all these phases of research, RDM is an integral part of best research practices.An integrated approach to RDM is becoming increasingly important in the scientific community, and is often expected by research funding bodies in the public and private sector. KU Leuven has started several initiatives to support good data management. In order to get a better understanding of researchers’ needs, you are invited to answer questions regarding your handling of research data:
