Ellis Island Trip Assignment

Due Wednesday Nov. 12. CHOICE TWO: Postcard

You will be our in-class expert historian. On Wed. Nov. 1 you will explain to our SS class the immigrant experience at Ellis Island. You will be responsible for creating a postcard from the perspective of an immigrant. You can choose to be an Irish, German, Italian, Russian, OR a Chinese immigrant.

Write a postcard letter home to a family member or a friend. Write in the first-person (for example, I came to America…)

In your postcard be sure to include the following information:

How was your experience at Ellis Island? What did you have to do once you arrived?

Were there any special tests or requirements you had to pass? What happened if you did not pass the requirements? Was your experience good or bad? Why? How did you feel when you arrived at Ellis Island? In your opinion, was Ellis Island an “island of hope” or “island of tears?” After Ellis Island, where do you plan to live and work? What are your hopes and dreams for living in America?

Postcard Guidelines:

1. You can type or hand-write your postcard.2. Postcards must be about the size of an actual postcard (roughly half a sheet of computer

paper).3. Postcards must have a picture (could be hand-drawn, one you took, or from the internet). 4. Postcards must be colorful and visually appealing.
