Planet Maths: The Circle πr², πDA polygon is any 2-dimensional shape formed with straight lines. Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons are all examples of polygons.P139 Follow the instructions for constructing the circle the first circle of radius 4cm. Make sure the pencil in your compass is sharp. The nib on the pencil and the needle of the compass need to be aligned. If the compass legs are very loose and moving as you try to draw a circle you should be able to tighten them with a small screw driver.

Monday Do A. Q.1&2, be careful on the a) part they say draw a circle and give you the radius. On the b) part they give you the DIAMETER to trick you. Remember you need the radius for your compass so divide the diameter by 2.

Tuesday Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVf9jkQ2QqAP140 there’s two ways to find the area of a circle. The First way is to use graph paper like the book. Count all the squares enclosed by the circle, if some are almost a full square you count them as a full square. If they’re half a square you can add two together and get one. This way assumes you have graph paper to hand whereas the second way that’s more accurate works always once you know either a measurement of the circle, e.g. the circumference, diameter or radius. The video talks about π (Pronounced Pie), it’s a Greek letter that represents a number that connects the diameter, radius and area of every circle to its circumference. When using it in school we usually give Pi the value of 3.14 or 22/7 as a fraction. Π is actually a never ending number, there’s world records for reciting it to the most places (it stands at 100,000 places, numbers after the decimal point.) https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/pi.htmlTo calculate the area of a circle using Pi the formula is πr² = Pi X (radius x radius) So on p140 try calculating the area of the circles using this formula instead of the graph paper. On A1from looking at the graph paper the diameter is 4 so radius is 2.Put that into the formula area= πr²Works out as area = 3.14 x (2x2) = 3.14 x 4 = 12.56cm²Doing it the graph paper way works out at 12cm².Do A1-3 and B1-3 this way.

Wednesday: P141 A measure the pictures of the coins to find their diameter.Q.3 1m = 100cm so divide 100 by the diameter of the above 1c coin.

On this question the sides of the rectangle are both 150m so if the whole track is 400m – (150 x 2) will leave you with the circumference of the two semi circles together. Divide this by 2 will give you the answer.

A) Count all the green squares and the four with the circleB) Calculate the area of the circle πr² Radius is 1m so 3.14x(1x1) , subtract this

answer from A.C) The area of the circle x €9D) This can be answered by looking at the picture. Each bed takes up four squares together.

Next dayThursday do P142 B.Friday Extra Work Sheet (You don’t need to print it out, can be answered in Maths Copy)

ART: Try this on a blank sheet of paper. Draw a circle of radius4cm. Next without changing the radius of the compass, put the needle anywhere on the circumference of the circle and draw another circle. Again don’t change the size of the compass, put the needle down on the circumference of the original circle at one of the points where the other circle crosses it. Draw another circle. Every time you draw a new circle put the needle down on a point where the new circle crosses the original one. If you do this correctly you should end up with a flower in the middle of the first circle. Colour in. If you draw a line from the tip of each petal to the next petal tip all around you get a perfect hexagon.

Monday: P143 B9,10, C5&6 A&B,D 5&6 A&BTuesday: P144 A5,B5, C5&6, D 5&6Wednesday: P145 This is all about BOMDAS which stands for Brackets Order Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction. It is about which operation you complete first in a sum. If there are brackets in the sum e.g. 1x(7-5)= Always do the part in brackets first. Next is order, it’s another word for power like 5². So if you had a sum (9-2)²+5= Do the sum in the brackets first, then square your answer. 7² =49 +5 = 54.After these if you have addition, subtraction, multiplication or division in a question you complete them by doing the multiplication first, then division, then addition and finally subtraction. So in the sum 3+7x2= you multiply the 7 by the 2 first then add the 3. Just do A today.

Spellings – Your spelling worksheets for the two weeks are at the bottom of this document. Look up all the words you don’t know the meaning of in your dictionary. You don’t have to write out the definitions. You can print out the sheets and do the work on them. If you can’t print them out copy the activity into your hard backs.

I hope anyone who tried got on okay with last week’s recipes. I made a mistake in the Scone one and converted the cups from either US cups to Grams instead of UK cups to grams so when I went to make them my mixture was too wet and I had to pour in a load more flour. In the end they didn’t rise. They tasted like scones, just didn’t look like them. Anyway try these. The first is a recipe for the cookies you get in Subway. I’ve had to make two batches already they’re that nice.

Subway CookiesBake Time: 12 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

INGREDIENTS

125g salted butter, softened

100g light brown sugar

75g granulated sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 medium egg (click here if you want to make this without eggs https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/articles/955371/baking-without-eggs/)

150g plain flour,

sifted 40g cocoa powder,

sifted 1/2 tsp baking soda

100g white chocolate, roughly chopped

200g milk chocolate, roughly chopped

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 175°C. Line 2 large baking trays with baking parchment. In a large bowl, combine the butter and sugars. Using a wooden spoon, cream the mixture until light and fluffy, for about 3 minutes.Lightly beat the egg and vanilla together, and add to the butter mixture a little at a time, beating until well combined.Using a wooden spoon or spatula, fold through the flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda until just combined. Finally, add the white and milk chocolate chips, mixing until evenly distributed. Be careful not to overwork the mixture.Using an ice cream scoop or spoon, divide the mixture into 16 Golf ball-size portions. Roll into a ball and place onto the lined baking trays, spaced at least 5cm apart. Depending on the size of the trays, this may need to be done in batches.Bake for 12 minutes until well spread and just set on the surface. The cookies will still be quite soft, but will firm up as they cool. Leave on the tray for five minutes, then carefully transfer to a

cooling rack to cool completely. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to seven days.

To have freshly baked cookies at the drop of a hat, freeze the unbaked shaped cookies.

When ready to bake, simply pre-heat the oven, place the frozen cookies onto a lined baking tray and bake from frozen for 10-15 minutes.
