Purpose of Music Videos

The main purpose of any music video is to promote a song in order to convince people that they should buy it. Music

videos would usually be played on music video programmes such as Kerrang! And MTV, depending on the genre of the music, the music video will match the

same tone as the song, for example, for a pop song, the music video would be bright and colourful, usually with

the main pop star dancing in the centre with background dancers, a heavy metal song’s music video on the other

hand will have a much more darker tone.

Music videos will make money if they are played on channels such as MTV, increasing profits for the company that produced both the song and the video; websites such as YouTube have allowed

companies to make even more money from music videos thru ad revenue. Music videos such as Gangnam style have gotten over a billion views as they are much easier to view since all you have to do is look it up in a search engine rather than sit and wait for it to appear on a music channel. One of

the most popular music shows was top of the pops; it gave great promotion of a new song and bands back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Artistic reasons behind making a music video are usually secondary, the main

aim is to promote the song and create a profit from the video, the people

behind the project however will want to give the music video much more

meaning depending on what type of genre they are making the music video for, for example, certain songs may be

very deep and have very serious themes, so the music video will probably match that, however, most pop music videos wouldn’t be very deep and will be shot inside of a studio with dancers. Music

videos are a great way of not only promoting a song, but the artist also as he/she will get a lot of publicity and put the artist’s image pout there to the public.

Synergy is the cooperation of 2 organizations in order to create a better product than it would be if separate, in music video terms, it is whenever 2 companies come together to make a video that

can be used as a platform to give both companies success in their respective areas, a good example of this would be Adele’s sky fall

song for the movie, this song was used to increase publicity for the film, the song went on to win the Oscar. Another example would be Limp Bizkit take a look around, which was the music video for

mission impossible, the music video featured clips form the action scenes in Mission impossible 2. it increased publicity for the song,

the band and the film.
