Assignment title Media Case Study

Purpose of this assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of audience theory by applying defining principles to a movie that you are familiar with. Developing knowledge of audience theory will support your future media productions, as it identifies the basic principles of audience engagement and explains how audiences respond to media content.

Scenario

You have been commissioned by an online blog to compose an analytical review of a feature film. The blog has a target audience of media professionals and broadcast students who have a sophisticated understanding of media theory. Your blog page must be informative, using principles of audience theory to provide a detailed, educational and professional analysis of your chosen subject.

Task 1 – Analytical Review (Unit 6: LO 3, 4)

Produce a report on a feature film of your choice, detailing how it is received by audiences using theoretical models. You must analyse the following:

The genre to which your chosen film is associated. What are the characteristics of the genre? What are the characteristics of your selected film that make it part of this genre?

How is the narrative structured? Does it have a linear or non-linear structure? How does your film apply Todorov’s theory?

Why do audiences chose to watch your selected film? How does your film satisfy the audience’s needs as highlighted in the principle of ‘Uses and Gratification’ (Education, Social Interaction and integration, Entertainment and identification)?

How can the hypodermic needle model be applied to your selected film? What are the potential effects of specific content (e.g. language, sex, violence)? What

is the wider debate surrounding this issue? How are different social groups represented in your selected film? Are stereotypes or

countertypes present in your selected film/show? What is the wider debate surrounding this issue?

What are the potential preferred, negotiated and oppositional responses to your film? What fan cultures have emerged and how do audiences express their love for your

selected film or its associated genre?

You should aim to completed this task by: W/C 23.05.16
