Purpose of the RoleThe Network Manager will oversee the efficient and effective operation and planning of ICT infrastructure across the school site, while providing hands-on ICT support to staff across the school. You will be responsible for all ICT hardware and software, servers, storage management, security, disaster recovery/business continuity.

The Network Manager will need to ensure that a high quality ICT provision is available at all times.

Main tasks and responsibilities Network

Management of the school’s network including the interface with any MIS

Create, implement and maintain a schedule for the network security: Firewall and antivirus updates, backup and recovery procedures, including failover servers and replication servers for critical equipment and data; physical security procedures.

Create and follow a daily checklist which should include checking, amending or investigating issues surrounding; our virtual environment backups (Veeam), and our Antivirus package with auto application updates (Heimdal).

Ensure that our Hyper-V Virtual Environment works as efficiently as possible, while also keeping track of disk space usage.

Manage the day to day maintenance of the school’s computer systems including Network user database and password allocations.

Work with the MIS Manager and Finance Manager on MIS and finance applications and end user accounts.

Store all software centrally and file licences effectively. Record and keep up to date details of assigned licences.

Manage the installation, configuration, maintenance and upgrading of the school’s networked systems, software and applications.

Manage user accounts, servers, workstations, routers, switches; diagnose faults and problems and carry out remedial action, including repair of servers, liaising with suppliers and their technical teams when required, in order to maintain an effective service on the school site.

Perform advanced diagnostic procedures on hardware, peripherals and applications as required.

Manage all systems of electronic communication, including mobile device management, and access for students and staff on the school networks, ensuring security of files and appropriate access to systems.

Support staff and students in the use of ICT equipment and peripherals, answering queries and demonstrating correct usage of specific programmes/systems, in order to ensure that all users can access relevant services/equipment.

Support

Maintain a service desk to log, monitor and track incidents/requests and the resolution of these. Log all incidents and requests made via Spiceworks Service Desk, email and in person. Prioritise tickets and then carry out the required work ensuring effective communication with the end user/s.

Maintain and fault find all computers around the school and organise where necessary if repairs are needed.

Troubleshoot any network performance noted by monitoring applications or advised by users.

Installation and Equipment

Create and maintain an up to date configuration management database of all the components of the ICT infrastructure and the physical locations and links between them.

Produce an accurate network diagram at the start of each academic year.

Provide an accurate asset list as and when required and publish reports identifying contents of each room at the start of each academic year and after any change. (These should be available to the Clerk of Works, HoDs, and SMT).

Track all changes to provide historical information about assets and equipment that have been assigned to departments and individuals.

Liaise with a third party for maintaining the printer/photocopier hardware onsite.

Set up and maintain computers in accordance with school standards

Advise Senior Management on emerging technologies and developments and be able to cost out the options for consideration and budgeting

Manage the installation of new computer software as required

Responsibility for all planned ICT works and to liaise with external contractors

Manage the installation of new computer hardware including wireless, fibre optic, CAT5 networks and external projects and liaise with the relevant internal staff with regards to cabling plans etc.

Arrange for the repair of hardware faults with outside agencies

Data Protection and Security

Ensure suitable data leakage protection systems are in place and that users are aware of the risks relating to emails with malicious intent. Provide support in situations where accidental breaches may occur and work with senior management when larger scale breaches are identified.

Inform the Deputy Head (Curriculum) immediately of any inappropriate use of the network facilities by a user.

Be aware of general and specific ICT Health and Safety issues and implement relevant precautions and routines.

Ensure data protection is in line with GDPR and reviewed accordingly. Refer any breaches to the appropriate person.

Implement a suitable Disaster Recovery Plan that sits as a stand alone process for wider business risks and also one that supports the requirements of the Business Recovery Committee. Ensure all plans are reviewed and updated on a regular basis and reflect any new threats to the IT provision.

Input into the Business Recovery Committee and make recommendations where necessary. Ensure issues are highlighted to the Committee and take the necessary action to reduce risk.

Ensure safe and reliable running of the ICT infrastructure in order that the integrity and security of the network is maintained at all times, including ensuring that a full disaster recovery programme is in place.

Person Specification

Educational Attainment

ITQ level 4, Microsoft Certification IT Professional or equivalent qualification or experience in an ICT related discipline.

A relevant qualification related to IT either at A level or above

Essential Experience

A sound general ICT background with knowledge of industry standard desktop application software (such as MS Office) and hardware.

Extensive practical knowledge of the relevant Windows operating systems

Extensive knowledge of Windows 2010 File Server Networks.

Full working knowledge and understanding of the range of relevant policies / codes of practice and awareness of relevant legislation, including those relating to compliance with the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts.

Desirable Experience

Excellent knowledge of ICT initiatives and developments in schools/colleges.

Aware of different levels of National Curriculum ICT and implications for infrastructure, e.g. consider the implications on server load of all PCs within the school logging in at the same time.

Understand how the overall technical requirements of the school should support the use of IT in the curriculum and management of the school.

Knowledge of how E-learning can support the implementation of the national curriculum in schools.

Knowledge and Experience

An expert user with extensive demonstrable experience to have included planning, managing, installing, configuring, upgrading and maintaining hardware and software and troubleshooting in a networked environment.

Specialist networking skills relating to managing active equipment, including wireless technology.

Assist and lead ICT improvement projects.

Apply an innovative approach to problem solving across the range of hardware, software and systems in use within the school.

Able to repair the full range of workstations and servers in use within the school/college.

Keep abreast with technological changes and provide technical advice about improvements that would benefit the school/college.

Able to relate well to children and adults, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, e.g. to make presentations to senior staff and Governors, e.g. on a proposed ICT development.

Provide advice and guidance to senior staff / Head Teacher / Governors on technical and specialist information and influence school policy on such matters.

Document systems and procedures, e.g. produce a staff handbook for ICT support team.
