Activity Description

Bathing with mountain views:Lake Achensee provides the perfect setting

Lake Achensee, situated at an elevation of approximately 930 metres, is nine kilometres in length and 133 metres at its deepest point. Known for its drinking water quality, it is Tirol’s largest bathing lake and, not only because of its size, known as the “Tirolean Sea”. Sailors and surfers appreciate the excellent wind conditions, swimmers enjoy the accessible shoreline, and nature lovers are fond of the colours. The bright limestone rock causes the surface of the water to shimmer in hues of Caribbean turquoise and aquamarine, especially in the shallow areas on the southern lakeshore where water temperatures reach up to 22 degrees Celsius in summer.

The mountains afford beautiful views of the “Tirolean Sea” which lies nestled like a fjord between the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. The Rofan cable car in Maurach and the Karwendel cable car in Pertisau transport visitors effortlessly up the mountains, but there is also solitude to be found on the high peaks. The five villages of Achenkirch, Maurach, Pertisau, Steinberg und Wiesing with a total population of 7,878 have joined forces under the brand "Achensee Sports & Vitality Park". Visitors can engage in nearly 50 different sports, ranging from gentle strolls in the valley to golfing, mountain biking, diverse water experiences to adrenaline-fueled activities in the mountains and in the air. In addition, the region offers special summer programmes for children and teenagers plus offers designed for the whole family: boat cruises, adventures on alpine pastures and a multitude of recreational activities at the leisure centre Atoll Achensee.

By the way: Tourism at Lake Achensee has a long tradition. Already 500 years ago, the Austrian sovereigns, emperors and kings discovered the region for hunting and fishing. In the 19th century, when summer holidays became the fashion among prosperous citizens, tourism development began in the region. Already in 1887, holidaymakers could travel by steamship on Lake Achensee. Two years later Europe’s oldest steam cog railway, the Achenseebahn, was opened. www.achensee.com

Nature Park Karwendel: Out and about with a ranger

The Nature Park Karwendel has its boundary on the western shore of Lake Achensee. It is the largest contiguous nature reserve in the northern limestone Alps, comprising over 727 square kilometres and stretching across to Bavaria. The first provisions for the protection of this unique alpine landscape – the only one of its kind in Europe – were first laid down in 1928. Today, hikers can roam through unspoilt valleys accompanied by chamois, ibex, marmots, deer and hares while birds of prey circle overhead. In the Nature Park Karwendel visitors have the opportunity to experience the secluded mountain landscape away from the tourist trails. Ranger-guided nature watch tours give visitors the chance to explore the local flora and fauna and to spot rare mountain denizens with spotting scopes and binoculars. The 5-hour tours occur every Wednesday and Thursday from April to October and are part of the region’s free guided hiking programme. The programme also features herb walks, sunrise hiking tours and tours to the distillery of the local elixir Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil). Those who prefer self-guided walks can choose from a variety of 500 kilometres of marked hiking trails. The region has something for everyone: from easy strolls in the valley to challenging summit victories.

At Lake Achensee, everyone will find their individual biking pleasure. Pleasure cyclists and families follow the gentle paths along the lakeshore or into the side valleys in the Nature Park Karwendel where rustic mountains huts invite to stop by. All villages of the region offer a variety of challenging mountain bike routes ranging from after-work tours to the famous "Karwendel Loop". The region has a number of quality-approved cycling accommodations catering to the needs of bikers, and various long-distance cycling routes pass through the Achensee region. By the way: The e-bike

Permits can be obtained at the boat rental in Pertisau, at Camping Schwarzenau in Achenkirch and the Hotel Post am See in Pertisau, where there is also equipment available to hire.

On land and in the water: Summer adventures for the whole family

Tirol’s largest lake is the perfect choice for activity holidays. Visitors can engage in over 50 different sports, ranging from hiking and climbing to swimming, sailing and kitesurfing. The huge variety of offers tailored to families makes the region an ideal multigenerational holiday destination. At Lake Achensee, family fun comes naturally, and there is something for every taste and age to enjoy: adventure playgrounds and forest high ropes courses, walks to alpine pastures with petting zoo and the Wusel Lake Trail alongside the lakeshore. The "Alpine Animal Circular Walk" is a memorable experience for the whole family, featuring interesting information and life-size animals, and even the "lazy” family members will be thrilled.

The region’s children’s and youth programmes from 29 June to 4 September have plenty of activities run by qualified supervisors: Young children explore the world of bees, visit a bakery and a farm with Wusel the water spirit, and set out pony riding and reading animal tracks. Activities for youngsters include climbing, white water swimming and standup paddle boarding.

By the way, the region is family-friendly with a seal of approval: the Achensee holiday region is one of 19 members of the "Tiroler Familiennester" association. It stands for the combination of family-friendly accommodation and the certified children and youth programme with

Tirolschiffahrt: Volle Kraft voraus seit 1887 The launch of the Achenseeschiffahrt shipping company marked the

beginning of tourism at Lake Achensee. Already in 1887, the first steamer St. Joseph ran a regular ship service over Tirol’s largest lake. The individual components for the ship were transported by horse from Jenbach to Lake Achensee and then assembled in Pertisau. Meanwhile the fleet of the Achenseeschiffahrt has three modern passenger ships: the "MS Stadt Innsbruck", the "MS Tirol" and the event and charter ship "MS Achensee" which hosts a diverse range of event cruises. This year’s offer will include brunches, theatre, dance cruises and even a line dance event. Fans of country music can look forward to the swimming “saloon” featuring live music from Ronny Nash and the Whiteline Casanovas. Passengers sit back and relax while cruising leisurely over Tirol’s largest lake on board the elegant ships of the Achensee fleet at 929 metres above sea level.

Alpine golf with tradition: Well-kept greens since 1934

Founded in 1934, the Achensee Golf & Country Club is one of Austria’s first golf courses and the oldest one in Tirol. The 18-hole course starts in the centre of the holiday village of Pertisau and stretches into the Karwendel Alpine Park, rising to an elevation of 1,000 metres. The beautiful old tree population and the imposing mountain ranges make a round of golf on this par-71 course a unique experience. www.golfclub-achensee.at

Golfers and aspiring golfers will also find excellent conditions in Achenkirch. The 9-hole course, located on a plateau and offering a spacious driving range for ideal training conditions, is operated by the "Posthotel Achenkirch". The Club House, which is located in a historic farmhouse dating back to 1682, is famous for its unique atmosphere. www.golfclub-achenk i rch.a t

Achensee Beer & Whisky AlpinA different way to process water

Pure water from the Karwendel, wheat and barley malt from Bamberg, hops from the Holledau and Speckner yeast – these are the ingredients of the Achensee beer. The top-fermented beer is available as light and dark brew, and it is said that its fruity taste will have your thirsty soul rejoice. In 2019, the private brewery was even named Tirol’s most popular microbrewery by the Falstaff guide. You can taste the excellent beer at the Langlaufstüberl and at the Hotel Karlwirt (both in Pertisau). Guided tours through the brewery at the Langlaufstüberl provide deeper insight into the art of beer making. www.hotelkarlwirt.at/das-hotel/achenseebier/

Aficionados of high-proof spirits will find over 70 kinds of brandies, schnapps and liqueurs at the Edelbrennerei Kostenzer in Maurach. Distiller Franz Kostenzer is especially proud of two remarkable creations: the “Whisky Alpin”, one of the first whiskies to be produced in Austria, and the “Gin Achensee” which is natural, with a flavour of spruce and fir needles. Well-being with tradition: Tiroler Steinöl®or "the healing legacy of the sea"

The beneficial and soothing effects of Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil) have been known long before the concept of “wellness” has emerged. Since 1902, Tiroler Steinöl® (shale oil) has been extracted from oil shale mined 1,500 metres above Lake Achensee and processed into skincare products. The creams, salves, lotions and shampoos are distinguished by high levels of naturally bound sulphur, as well as by special active ingredients that originate from prehistoric sea creatures and plants, in other words, from a time when the entire continent was still under water. In the summer months, visitors can set out on guided tours to the shale oil mine and distillery in the Bächental. The Vitalberg visitor centre in Pertisau is open to visitors year-round and showcases exhibits depicting the 115-year history of the Tiroler Steinöl® miners (www.steinoel.at). Anyone who wants to try the products can book treatments in the wellness departments at numerous hotels at Lake Achensee.
