Everyone who came to the picnic this year had a really lovely time and for that we must thank Liz and David White for their hospitality once again and Brian and his team, who not only erected the marquee but also two gazebos. We had been told to expect rain until 10am on the day but it lasted most of the day, although the drizzle after lunch did not deter our hardy members.  Gill’s boules game was very popular as was Ken’s nearest the pin golf, for those who ventured outside.  Of course, many took advantage of the chance to travel on David’s train whilst others concentrated their brain cells on Sue’s tricky bears and hats quiz, Barbara’s photo competition and guessing the weight of the carrot cake.  There were not many entries in the decorated teddy bears and hat competitions but there was quality.  The plant swap stall was also popular. We enjoyed the trusty marbles game, thanks to Bob, and played dominoes.  The songsters sounded “like a choir” before the afternoon was rounded off with tea and lots of cakes. It takes more than a little rain to put off our hardy members and all who looked at the weather and decided not to join us missed out on a lovely U3A annual event.   Put the date on your calendar for next year as we should like to see even more of you there. Lutterworth U3A Online

We are trying to encourage our members to make use of the Lutterworth U3A website.

Would you be interested in having an online Group Page for your Group(s) for easy access to details of future meetings dates, times, venues, and Group news? Monthly reports and date of next meeting would still be included in the printed newsletter. It does require a Group member to ensure that information on their Group page is updated regularly. Apart from reducing printing costs by reducing the size of the printed newsletter, it provides a single access point for specific Group information and any last minute changes of plans.

If this is something you would consider, our online coordinator is Kate Ayres, who can be contacted on 01455 209074 or e-mail [email protected] and she will be happy to facilitate this

Following on from the success of last year's competition, we are inviting members to submit any photos taken this year. The pictures can be of any subject, in colour or black and white, and of any size up to A4. The closing date is the September Monthly meeting and the winner will be announced at the October meeting. Please put a pseudonym on the back of the photograph and provide an envelope with the pseudonym on it and your name sealed inside. Alan Shean has agreed to judge the entries and no-one will know who has won until the envelope is opened at the meeting. You can enter as many pictures as you want, so take your camera with you, get snapping and good luck!

MUSIC FOR FUN

I made the suggestion to the Songsters that there might be someone who would like to try their hand at conducting an item – after all the BBC ran a series of programmes several years ago in which Sue Perkins was the eventual winner and got to conduct a performance given by one of the BBC’s orchestras.  I am not thinking of anything quite as grand as that!

It was pointed out that not only are there other music groups in our U3A but also there might be someone who doesn’t belong to any of our music making who, nevertheless, has a secret wish to have a go.

In the spirit of U3A and its philosophy of sharing knowledge and skills with fellow members I would be very pleased to encourage anyone who would like to explore this idea; give them any guidance they might wish for and they could have the ‘use’ of the Songsters to try their hand.  It would probably be better if such a person (or even such people) were to have a piece of music in mind that they would like to use, but I would also be very happy to suggest suitable items.

Although world famous conductors might seem to be charismatic figures, there is nothing magical about conducting; it is merely leading and co-ordinating a group of people as together they make music. It is a very gratifying thing to do – just as is singing, playing an instrument or listening to others as they sing or play.

Anyone who is interested in exploring this idea should get in touch with me:- Phone 01455 552864 or email [email protected].

The trip to Castle Howard on Thursday 28th September has now been changed; we are going to Woburn Abbey and Gardens instead.

The date and time of leaving Lutterworth are unchanged.  We will leave from outside the Wycliffe Rooms at 10am on Thursday 28th September for a shorter journey to Woburn.  I have changed this visit as I was informed that the gardens at Castle Howard were disappointing and I did not want to travel all the way there only to find out that this was true.  This visit will cost £25 rather than the £30 cost of going to Castle Howard and I shall refund the difference to all who have

paid.  I have spoken to members who had booked the original visit and explained the change to them.  If you now feel able to join us on this shorter coach trip, book with me ASAP.

The book for August was “Postcards” by Annie Proulx (pronounced “prue”). This was her first novel although she is probably better known for the award winning “Shipping News” and for “Brokeback Mountain”, which was made into a film.

Page 4: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewKnit and Stitch needs volunteers like you to join us at Lutterworth Methodist Church on the first Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm to help

The story revolves around Loyal, the eldest son of the Blood Family, who accidentally kills his girlfriend, and hides her body amongst some rocks.  Loyal abandons the family farm in Vermont and sets out on a journey across America that will continue for the rest of his life.  The only connection with his family is in the form of postcards, which he sends with no return address.  The story chronicles the disintegration of the farming industry and the fate of the Blood Family in adapting to life after WW11. The book for September is “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy, followed by “Keeper of Lost Things” by Ruth Hogan in October and “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier in November. New members are very welcome.

August is often a quiet time for birders with most of the adult birds in moult and the young in June plumage but it was a glorious morning to visit Brandon Marsh. The new hide by the feeders was open, so very close up views. We enjoyed our very lazy walk around the reserve, seeing 40 species. At least four sightings of kingfisher and five buzzards at once along with hobby and possibly a hen harrier. Our next outing will be on the 5th Friday, September 29th. Usual time (09.30) with pack up at the Recreation park car park.

Report on Long Walk 2nd August

The forecast was not looking too good but 13 walkers and three dogs set off from the car park in Salcey Forest.  The walk was to be 11 miles long and the first stop was the treetop walkway which allowed us to walk up above the tree canopy and look out over Northampton in the distance.  We continued through the forest and then on to the village of Stoke Goldington where we had a picnic lunch in the porch of the pretty church.  The threatened rain made a brief appearance as we sat in the shelter of the porch.  We then headed into the village centre and had a

refreshing drink in The Lamb, a lovely little pub.  Feeling refreshed and having covered half of the distance we circled above the village to return to the forest.  It was then that the rain really set in and we all got quite wet before we made it back under the trees at which point the rain eased.  It was an enjoyable walk in spite of the weather and everyone could feel proud of covering the distance at a good walking pace.  The dogs seemed to have walked about three times as far, as they darted back and forth.

August walk

Two myths to explode: 1. July and August are good months to walk. NO!2. Lightning doesn’t strike twice…. IT DOES!

Emulating the Gumley walk of 26th July, our day also started and continued wet, but even

Page 6: u3asites.org.uk€¦  · Web viewKnit and Stitch needs volunteers like you to join us at Lutterworth Methodist Church on the first Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm to help

worse for our leader, no shorts due to the 12C temperature! After some prior debate about cancellation, all 11 walkers being of the right stuff set out for the 4.7-mile circular walk to Laughton. An immensely scenic route if one wasn’t looking down all the time, but fortunately the long grass had been topped to make our passage easier. Passing (obviously moneyed) Gumley Lodge we followed the gated bridle way uphill to Laughton, where we gathered at St Luke’s’ church for a break. One of our group with criminal tendencies discovered the door to be unlocked, so we congregated in the dry to contemplate the beautiful wooden roof and the meaning of life. Leaving all religious valuables intact we departed without further incident, or even accident, to Gumley. Outside the Bell Inn the lure of food proved too much for 4 of us, while 3 other members repaired to the Man At Arms to save themselves 96p each (actually to meet someone there). It is proposed to repeat both Gumley walks next year when, hopefully, better conditions will prevail to take in the views.

August 2017 Walk Report

Whilst driving to the start at Walcote I had the song “The sun ain`t gonna shine anymore” running through my mind. This is becoming a recurrent theme on the Wednesday walks – not much sun and rain! The morning was, again, grey but also quite humid. To start with, it was, thankfully, dry. Mike and Lesley Chapman lead 19 of us off from the Black Horse. As we made our way, mostly through fields, towards Kimcote the rain again tried to “enhance” the walk but, fortunately, it was only a very half-hearted mizzle, just enough to spoil the ladies coiffeur. Mike tried to add some excitement by missing a stile but the walkers at the back spotted the deliberate mistake. We stopped for a break in Kimcote churchyard. Restarting, Tony Allen led us on a “how the others live” detour, which was a footpath that ran from the churchyard through the back garden of Kimcote Hall. It was quite impressive but not to everyone`s taste. The grounds were extensive and immaculate.

Mike then realised that we were not going to get back to the pub on time for lunch so he wound up the pace a bit, as we walked down Poultney Lane, only to be frustrated by a heavy lorry coming towards us down the narrow lane. We then continued at a good pace over the hill to return to Walcote. As we arrived back to the pub, would you believe it, the sun came out. I think it was having a laugh!

During our monthly quiz afternoon, Geoff took us all round the world. There was a round where “I love you” was written in 20 different languages which we needed to identify. Another round had20 images of the Euro from different countries to identify. Then there was a map showing 48 of the mainland states of the USA. Glenys is very good on facts about US states and was fortunately in my team. She says that she learns these facts to help her sleep. Another cure for insomnia? ART APPRECIATION GROUPCo-ordinators: Rae Flowerday Tel. 556942 & Sue Woodhead Tel. 01455 558037

For the group’s August meeting we considered the life and work of the French post- Impressionist painter Georges Seurat [1854-1891]. He is best known as the artist who developed the style of painting known as pointillism. This is a technique in which the painter, rather than mix the final colour effect on his palette, applies ‘points’ of contrasting colour directly onto the canvas that are then ‘mixed’ optically by the viewer’s observation to give the final colour effect. It is a technique not dissimilar to mosaic construction and the group was highly impressed by the skill involved, particularly in creating subtly different colour effects. Also impressive were Seurat’s drawing skills, particularly using black charcoal on textured paper, that were a prominent feature of his early work. Sadly he died at the early age of 31 & we were left wondering what he might have achieved if his career had been able to blossom. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 28th September when we will be looking at the work of the Italian painters Piero Della Francesca and Fra Angelico. Homework is to bring along any favourite examples of the work of these artists. Venue: 34, Macaulay Road. Apologies to Sue & Gordon [Tel 556192].This group still has a few spaces if anyone would like to join us for an informal look at art and artists from ancient to modern. We have a different video stimulus each month, chosen by the group, and enjoy the occasional visit to galleries and exhibitions. None of us are experts, all of us have different tastes and if you would like to add yours to the mix then do get in touch with Rae.

Eleven of us went to Sue and Tony's for the August buffet supper club feast and what a delicious spread we had as we always do! The evening passed very quickly as everyone was engaged in the lively conversation that covered a wide range of topics. After everyone had eaten the lovely food, we were treated to delicious chocolates supplied by our genial hosts and took our seats in the lounge to continue chatting.  Many thanks to Sue and Tony for a lovely evening.Lynda Shean

Ten members gathered in Brenda and Mick’s lovely conservatory for the August Buffet Supper. With two tables quite close it was easy to listen in to most conversations which

The food was as usual excellent except for one dish, Risotto, which had been made by an eminent member who realised the next morning that she had not put any rice in it! In deference to her old age, no one had appeared to make any comment. She is still very red faced about it…..Other than that it was an excellent evening thanks to our very generous hosts. The September hosts were Tony and Sheila Macdonald only, as Katie Scott, having had a recent serious operation was not able to host her party. We will meet regularly, on the first and third Monday each month until December. We have welcomed new members throughout the year and shall be very pleased to see more new recruits in September. New lady members will also be very welcome, of course!

Special Notices

Brian Fowler’s Great North Run2017

I will be absent from the Monthly Group meeting on September 12th as I will have taken part on Sunday 10th in the aforementioned half marathon that starts in Newcastle and finishes in South Shields. Mo Farah will also be taking part. I expect to see him early on but feel sure he will finish some long way ahead of me, but then I am more than 44 years older than him. Although I have run this race before I have never run it at the age I am now.Once again, I will be wearing the green vest of Macmillan Cancer Support to aid that charity. Following the race, I will enjoy a few days visiting the beauty spots and beaches in Northumberland.

Brian Fowler

Request from the Department of Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour

at the University of Leicester.

My name is Kayleigh Warrington and I am a researcher from the (above) dept. We are conducting a project looking at reading in older adults (aged 65+)

The experiment involves reading sentences and answering simple comprehensive questions on a computer. In order to provide us with detailed information about the reading process, your eye movements will be monitored throughout using an eye-tracking device. Eye-tracking is completely harmless and simply uses an infrared camera to record where you are looking. No computer knowledge is required in order to take part.

To take part you must:Be aged 65 or overBe a native UK English speaker (learnt English as your first language in the UK)Have no history of dyslexiaHave no serious eye disorders (eg macular degeneration, advanced cataracts)

The study takes place at the university and will take around one and a half to two hours to complete. In exchange for participation, we are offering a £25 payment as well as reimbursement of any travel expenses. If you have any questions, or are interested in taking part, I can be contacted via email ([email protected]) or telephone 0116 229 7176.Your participation could ultimately help us to understand the reading difficulties experienced by older adults.Thank you very much. If any of you are interested in helping with this research, please contact Kayleigh and let us know of your experiences as the U3A is a valuable source of information to researchers and of course, not only is it helpful in the long term but an interesting experience to be part of such research. We are encouraged to try to help as an organisation.

INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS AND A REMINDER FOR ALL

LUTTERWORTH U3A GENERAL DISCLAIMER, U3A EventsWhile every effort is made to inform members of possible difficulties which may be encountered on U3A trips and other events, it is up to individuals to ensure any event is within their capability before making a firm booking. See also section on carers. In the event that a member cannot attend an event after having paid, organizers will try to sell the place(s) on. If the place(s) cannot be sold on, then there is no guarantee of any refund of the monies handed over.

LUTTERWORTH U3A TRIPS, USE OF SEAT BELTSBy law the use of belts, where fitted, in coaches is mandatory, whether or not the driver issues a reminder unless there is a medical reason why the belt cannot be used. Any such claim must be supported by a note from a doctor. Failure to use the belts not only puts the safety of those individuals at risk but also endangers other passengers in that, in the event of an accident, the unbelted passengers could be thrown around the coach causing injury or even death to others. Insurers, always on the lookout for reasons not to pay, would almost certainly reduce or possibly refuse payments to persons who were not using their belts and it is not difficult for vehicle inspectors to show when this has been the case.If any belts are found to be unserviceable on a coach that we are using, this should be brought to the attention of the organizer and the coach driver.

LUTTERWORTH U3A Membership Records, Data Protection Summary. The membership records for Lutterworth U3A (LU3A) are kept in computer files as follows:Main Copy is maintained and held as an Excel file by Alan Shean,, the Membership Secretary, on his own computer.Backup Copies are maintained by Gordon Jones and held in Excel and Access on his own computer and, under password control, on a U3A owned laptop. The information is available only to committee members, solely for use on Lutterworth U3A business and will not be passed on in whole or in part to any third party group or person.Any member may request to view their own membership record. If the record is requested by email, the address used to request the information must be part of the record. If a print of the record is required, there will be a small charge to cover the costs.

LUTTERWORTH U3A, PARKING AT THE WYCLIFFE ROOMS.A few of the parking spaces in the Wycliffe Rooms car park have been leased to a private company. The spaces are identified using the company name. Please do not park in these spaces at any time.In order that the owners of the site may sort out unauthorised parking, it is requested that U3A members using the car park on meeting days put a notice on display in their car showing the driver’s name and the words ‘LUTTERWORTH U3A’. Note that this is not a blanket permission to use the site and only applies between 9.00am and 1.00pm when we are meeting in the hall.

LUTTERWORTH U3A, Members Requiring Carers.U3As are self-help co-operative organizations run entirely by the members for the members and therefore it is important that individuals are able to take full responsibility for their own participation in U3A activities or events.  The committee would not wish members to stop attending even if health problems or disability might preclude a member from engaging fully in U3A activities.  The Third Age Trust, after considerable consultation has provided the following protocol to be employed in such circumstance and has extended its liability insurance to cover the attendance of a carer.  Where members are no longer able to take full responsibility for themselves they may only attend meetings, groups and events if accompanied by a carer or a family member, who will accept full responsibility on their behalf.  The carer does not have to be a U3A member.A carer is someone approved by the Family of the Member for that role. The carer would be expected to pay the full cost of the activity engaged in.If you should find yourself in the position of needing carer assistance in order to continue to enjoy your membership of Lutterworth U3A do feel free to speak to a member of committee in confidence

LUTTERWORTH U3A Interest Groups’ FinancesLutterworth U3A Social Account

In 2006 the Third Age Trust sent out instructions to all U3As to tighten up the handling of finances with respect to interest groups. At that time we set up the Lutterworth U3A Social Account so that we and our groups could comply with these instructions. Any member involved in collecting money from Lutterworth U3A members must work within these rules.Lutterworth U3A Committee Duties:The committee members are regarded as trustees and are responsible for the proper conduct of all finances within Lutterworth U3A.Lutterworth U3A Social Account:The Social Account is a NatWest bank account administered by the Social Account Treasurer, currently Gordon Jones. Each group has a sub account within this account to keep their funds separated. There is a monthly audit by the Social Account Treasurer to check the account against the bank statement and an annual audit of the account and sub accounts by an auditor appointed by the U3A Committee. Cheques are issued by the Social account Treasurer at the request of a sub account holder. The Social Account has no loan or advance facility.Advertising Events:Any advertisement for a Lutterworth U3A event either in the Lutterworth U3A Newsletter or on a flier may not request payment to a personal bank account or cash payment. From the beginning of the Lutterworth U3A financial year in January 2016 any advertisement that does not comply with these rules may not be attributed to Lutterworth U3A and will not be accepted for publication.Payment methods from members:The preferred mode of payment to Lutterworth U3A Social Account is by cheque. Some members prefer to pay with cash, that is their choice but cash payment may not be requested. Members must understand that cash payments, once made, cannot be tracked. Ask for a receipt if you wish. Lutterworth U3A does not take payment by any card.Acceptable Payees and Holding of Funds:Cheques for U3A events should be made payable either to ‘Lutterworth U3A Social Account’ or to a bona fide supplier. Cheques must not be made out to individuals in the U3A as the Third Age Trust has said that these funds must not pass through organisers’ private bank accounts nor should members’ funds be held by organisers at their places of residence. If any funds are held short term at an organizer’s residence they should be clearly labelled with the details of the group to which they belong.Groups with small subscriptions, for example where the funds are collected at a meeting and paid out in room rental, food or similar outgoings, should try to gauge the subscriptions so as not to accumulate a large sum of money. In such cases, members of the group should be made aware of how the residual funds are held. The group leaders of all groups should ensure, at least annually, that their membership is aware of the level of funds held by the group.Payment from Lutterworth U3A Social Account:The group leader or other nominated treasurer of a group requests a cheque from the Social Account Treasurer. The payee must be a valid business supplying goods or services or a U3A leader or member who has already paid an invoice or other expenses using their own card or funds. In the case of payments to members, a valid receipt is required.Audit of Accounts:Groups within Lutterworth U3A that handle members’ money must keep an auditable record to be presented to the appointed auditor in January each year. Groups with an annual turnover of less than £250.00 may be exempt from audit although the membership can request one.Notes for Members:Payments for events that do not comply with the fore-going rules are not covered by Lutterworth U3A or the U3A generally and U3A insurances will not apply
