Homemaker’s Aim

TO HAVE THE HOME----- Economically Sound Mechanically Convenient Physically Healthful Morally Wholesome Mentally Stimulating Artistically Satisfying Socially Responsible Spiritually Inspiring Founded upon Mutual Affection and Respect - Juliet Lita Bane, 1918

Collect for Club Women

Keep us, O God, from pettiness;

Let us be large in thought, in word, in deedLet us be done with fault finding

And leave off self-seeking.May we put away all pretenses

And meet each other fact to face, Without self-pity and without prejudice.

May we never be hasty in judgment And always generous.

Let us take time for all things;Make us grow calm, serene and gentle.

Teach us to put into action our better impulses,Straight forward and unafraid.

Grant that we may realize that it is the littleThings that create differences;

That in the big things of life we are as one.And may we strive to touch and know

The great common human heart of us all, and O God, let us forget not to be kind.

- Mary Stewart, 1918

50 YEAR MEMBERS2019

Marge Bluhm – Royal Unit I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota (1939). My father was a pastor and we moved to Peoria when I was 10 years old. I graduated from Limestone High School and went to Midwest Business School. I then worked in an insurance office for 2 years. I met my future husband, Leon of St. Joseph, through the youth group of our church. We were married in June of 1960 and I moved to the family farm near Royal. I was the chief cook, go-fer, truck drive, and bookkeeper, along with raising three children. My mother-in-law, Etta Bluhm, was a long-time members of the Royal Home Extension and she encouraged me to join them. I have served as secretary, treasurer and President (for as long as I can remember). Our children are: Mark (Lisa) CFO of Food service at Eastern IL University; Douglas (Lori) our master farmer; and Mary (Chris Schmitz) a self-employed CPA. We have six grandchildren: Matthew, a senior at Eastern; Emily, a freshman at U of I (Ag Finance); Evan, a sophomore at SJO; Johanna, 8th grade and Allison 5th grade and Ryan, 2nd grade at Prairieview/Ogden. We’ve aways been involved with all activities and offices at the St. John Lutheran Church in Royal as well as school activities. With advancing age and health issues we are now retired.

Elizabeth Michael - Mahomet Unit I married my husband Dick who had three sons and later we had a baby girl. I joined the Champaign-Urbana Nights unit and later we moved to Mahomet and joined the Mahomet Unit which at this time had 60 members. A wonderful group of ladies. I have served three different times as President of the Mahomet Unit. I have served two years as vice president on the HCE County Board and from 2006-2009 served as President on the County Board. After serving as President I held the position of Community Outreach. We made neck coolers and weighted blankets. I am now serve as chairman of the sewing group that make weighted blankets for children with Autism in Champaign County. I have been making the weighted blankets for Champaign County for 11 years. I was the oldest of six children. At age 10 years I joined 4-H and learned sewing and baking and enjoyed it so much. My grandmother Ingleman belonged to the Home Bureau and I got to go with her sometimes to her meetings. I made up my mind I wanted to belong to the organization.

Natalie Riecks – Member-at-Large When Natalie was first out of college, was a Home Advisor for several years for Iroquois, Moultrie and Massac Counties. Later she was on the Extension 4-H Staff at the University of Illinois. She married and had three sons. They lived in Mahomet where she joined the Mahomet Unit and was a member for 20 years. She was a 4-H leader with 20+ members in the club. She was very active in organizing and recruiting

project leaders for several 4-H groups in the Mahomet area. She and her husband moved to Paxton where they owned the local IGA grocery store. Her son Craig owns the grocery store now. She was a member of the Ford/Iroquois and Champaign County HCE. Natalie lives at Villas of Holly Brook which she is very active in their activities especially three times a week

Highlights of the Year 2018 Theme for the Year: “Celebrating at the Crossroads”President – Mary Lou Younger Our 2018 year has been a good one and we celebrated our 100th year Anniversary.  The celebration was tremendous with Nancy Benz and Luanna Olson heading the committee along with the efforts of many other persons.  The research took a tremendous amount of work and time, but it was an outstanding display of memorabilia.  The beautiful lace tablecloths and teapots and teacups provided by Vickie Siebenhaar were beautiful.  Thank you to all who assisted and those that attended the beautiful event. Our efforts to reduce expenses started two years ago are paying off.  By eliminating some travel expenses and changing  printers were mighty helpful.  Rather than withdraw money from our savings, we decided to sponsor a Spring Craft Sale to help pay for our Anniversary Celebration.  We needed $1000.  The Spring Craft netted us $998.00.  Our garage sale continues successfully netting us $2811.00 and the Holiday Trees and Craft Sale netted us $939.00, plus the various units that participated and Jean's Craft Club made combined $455.00. It was not necessary to take any money out of savings and maybe we can return what  we had withdrawn a few years ago.  It is also time start thinking of providing possibly scholarships and/or supporting some of the community projects. I thank everyone for their support and participation.  We are blessed with having such good people in our units that  work hard and help so much and give so much.  Yours truly, Mary Lou Younger, CCHCE President 2018 1 st Vice President – Program – Bobbi McEntire 2018 got off to a good start. Our extension educators Kathy Sweedler and Chelsea Byers presented our lessons. We had one webinar which is different for us and we are even doing some package lessons. Master gardeners and master naturalists are also glad to give an occasional lesson. We are trying to work with the educators since they have a small staff due to budgeting issues. The units are also able to have outside speakers present a program if they do not want to use our lessons. Thank you so much for the great attendance when the lessons are being presented. Hope you are pleased with the latest program book done by our new printer. They are easy to work with and have given us a much better price.  As usual I have been involved in most of our yearly events. It was a busy time getting ready for our annual

garage sale. First to get the items collected, sorted, priced and then transported to the office for the sale. Thanks for all your donations. Our holiday trees and craft sale was a great success. We had 18 vendors who all did quite well. Thank you to all the units who decorated trees and wreaths, and provided goodies for our bake sale. We couldn't manage without your support. It always amazes me how quickly the year goes by and how many events we are able to hold.It has been another enjoyable year. Looking forward to seeing you at the annual meeting. Please feel free to share any ideas you might have to help us acquire new members or ideas for new lessons.

Family and Community Issues – Judy French

Support for DSC (Development Services Center) residential homes has been my focus for this year.  DSC is giving us more publicity and has said how much they appreciate all our donations to the residential houses.  The attention received is greatly appreciated by the clients and all gifts bring them happiness.  The new contact people are Janice E. McAteer, Director of Development and Stephanie Davenport, Development Specialist.  They can be reached by calling 217-356-9176. This year I have been bringing gift certificates to be used for the residents to have special outings or treats.  I also try and bring a special treat for each holiday.  I want to say a special thanks to all who have participated in this project.Elizabeth Michaels and her volunteers have continued making weighted blankets which give comfort and rest to the person using it and to the family or care giver.

Sewing Days – Community Issues - Elizabeth Michael Weighted Blanket Project – This is my 10th year chairing this project. We meet several months at the Farm Bureau

Auditorium to sew on the weighted blankets. Six to ten ladies bring sewing machines. Some of the ladies cut fabric and press the fabric for the ladies that sew. We made approximately 65 blankets this past year. Our finished blankets go to Christopher Hall, 904 W. Nevada in Urbana where the autism program is located. Parents pick up the blankets there for their child. Our sewing group appreciate all those that have donated money, fabric and thread for the sewing of the blankets. I am working on Carle Clinic to give use some funds for the blankets. We receive thank you notes and phone calls from those families receiving our blankets. Our sewing group brings a sack lunch and we always say a prayer for the families and children that receive the blankets. The blankets received give the child comfort and security. In 2018, there was no Disability Expo or Autism Walk because of lack of funds. This year the Disability Expo was on April 7, 2018 at the Vineyard Church. Judy French and I worked at this event and gave away 10 weighted blankets to families in need. The Autism Walk will be on April 21 at the Kesler Hall at the Champaign County Fair Grounds. We also continue to collect shoes, purses and gently used bras for the Courage Connection Retail Store in Lincoln Square in Urbana. Their mission is to Assist the residents of Courage Connection in obtaining jobs and supporting their families through job training; Support the mission of the organization and increase community awareness of the issues of homelessness.

International – Donna Prahl The country of study for 2018 was Australia.  Australia is the only country that occupies a complete continent and the sixth largest country in the world.  Other interesting facts is Australia is the driest inhabited continent, includes the island of Tasmania, the famed Australian Outback and the Great Barrier Reef.  The international potluck luncheon was held on Wednesday, November 14th at the Farm Bureau building.  The tables were decorated with a bud vase that included an Australian Flag and red, white, and blue carnations.  The coverings on the tables altered between the theme colors of red, white and blue.  The placements, name tags and programs had pictures of the flag, various animals, flowers and instruments.  Tamara Ducey was our speaker for the afternoon.  She told us about her trip to Australia and Tasmania.  Everyone enjoyed Tamara’s slides, handouts and singing of Walking Matilda (walking the countryside with a backpack).  The song is considered by many to be the unofficial national anthem of Australia.   I attended the March District meeting in Effingham.  At the meeting I meet Sarah Kenny.  She is from Western Australia .  I wrote an article each month for the Chatter and several times included a recipe from Australia.  I also did an International poster for the July 100th anniversary of Champaign County HCE.

It was quite an experience when I worked on the yearly report that had to be done by January 25th. I learned how many hours each of you spent in helping others and making a difference every day.  Also, each month when I prepare an article for The Chatter, I try explaining our purpose for volunteering and list some ideas you might like to think about  to help your community or anyone who needs help now and then.

I want to thank you for believing in me and giving me this opportunity to serve as Volunteer Hours Chairman.Pat Meriedth

America the BeautifulO beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain

majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on theeAnd crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,Whose stern, impassioned stressA thoroughfare for freedom beatAcross the wilderness!America! America!God mend thine every flaw,Confirm thy soul in self-control,Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes provedIn liberating strife,Who more than self their country lovedAnd mercy more than life!America! America!May God thy gold refine,Till all success be nobleness,And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dreamThat sees beyond the yearsThine alabaster cities gleamUndimmed by human tears!America! America!

God shed His grace on theeAnd crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea!

This Land is Your Land Chorus:This land is your

land, this land is my landFrom California, to the New York IslandFrom the redwood forest, to the gulf stream watersThis land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highwayI saw above me an endless skywayI saw below me a golden valleyThis land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footstepsTo the sparkling sands of her diamond desertsAnd all around me a voice was soundingThis land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strollingThe wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rollingThe fog was lifting a voice come chantingThis land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign thereAnd that sign said - no tress passin'But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steepleNear the relief office - I see my peopleAnd some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'If this land's still made for you and me.

You're a Grand Old FlagYou're a grand old flag,You're a high flying flagAnd forever in peace may you wave.You're the emblem ofThe land I love.The home of the free and the brave.Ev'ry heart beats true'neath the Red, White and Blue,Where there's never a boast or brag.Should auld acquaintance be forgot,Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

You're a grand old flag,You're a high flying flagAnd forever in peace may you wave.You're the emblem ofThe land I love.The home of the free and the brave.Ev'ry heart beats true'neath the Red, White and Blue,Where there's never a boast or brag.Should auld acquaintance be forgot,Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Star Spangled BannerOh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed At the twilight's last gleaming;

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, Through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched Were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, The bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night, That our flag was still there:

Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Sewing Days – Community Issues - Elizabeth Michael Another County Project supported by Champaign County HCE members is the sewing of the Linus Weighted Blankets. On a monthly gathering, several members bring their sewing machines to sew the weighted blankets and meet at the FBA from 9:30 – 3 p.m. Members that do not sew also come to help cut, iron and pin material for the sewers which is much appreciated help. We have given out in 2016, 83 weighted blankets for families in Champaign County. Some of our blankets are sent to Linda Tortortella, Visiting Coordinator for the Autism program at the U of I and support group for parents of children with autism. 70 Linus blankets were made and were given out to the hospitals and Crisis Nursery. The 2016 Autism Walk at the Champaign County Fairgrounds, Elizabeth Michael and Judy French set up an information booth on this project and 28 blankets were given out to families at this event. Members and the community help support this project by donating fabric and supplies for this project. Sew Sassy gives us a discount on velcro and A Quilting Bee in Mahomet gives us a discount on fabric. This past year donations were received by Cub Pack 42 from Ogden contributed 22 years of fabric enough to make 11 blankets; AMBUCS gave $250.00, First Christian Sunday School class gave $300.00 and two other gentlemen gave $50 and $200 donation. It takes $30.00 to make one weighted

blankets. Celebrating HCE month Elizabeth Michaels and Judy French had a booth at the Disability Expo at the Fluid Center and gave away 12 weighted blankets. Many people stopped by and thanked us for their blankets and told us how much they have helped. Thank you to the ladies that help each month making the blankets: Stephanie Mumm, Mary Ann Rinkenberger, Janice Whiteside, Leatrice Helbling, Richey Vanderspool, Jean Cornell, Lynn Trotter, Jackie Harris, Carolyn Phelps and the late Ellen Plummer. I am so thankful for these ladies that sew with me. We have a wonderful fellowship as we work together to make a difference for the children. We would like to encourage other members to come for a great day of fellowship making these blankets for our community.
