The history of Sangre Grande came from Spanish surveyors of the late 1770’s who were charting Trinidad for the first Spanish map, and who by accident named most of our rivers. They found that the water at two of the tributaries of the Oropouche River was as red as blood. So they gave the name “Sangre” which is Spanish for blood and the larger tributary was called “Sangre Grande” meaning “Big Blood” and the smaller “Sangre Chiquito” meaning “Small Blood”.

In the same way that the Spanish surveyors were charting new areas in Trinidad, Decentralisation is also charting new waters in this area and bringing services closer to the people with our new approaches e.g. Step Up- which is an all round service to our clients. We are committed to better and timely service, putting more emphasis on output- which is the improved lifestyle of our clients.

This starts right here at our office. When clients enter the Sangre Grande Regional Social Services Office, they will see and feel an atmosphere of welcome, warmth and comfort. They will be greeted and serviced in a timely manner, their children will have in an area that they will be safe and they can supervise them as well. Clients can have light refreshments while they wait, gain some more knowledge about our services provided from our continuously running public DVD and any other queries they may have, our friendly staff will be willing to assist in any way.

This is why the concept of the ‘Fish’ philosophy is relevant for us. We use all the principles as guidelines for creating and sustaining a positive working environment for ourselves and our clients.

The display for Fish Day is based on three tenants:

History of Sangre Grande The display is in the shape of a heart. This symbolises love, unity and peace. It illustrates helping

people of the community and meeting their needs. The display embodies the Ministry of the People and Social Development meeting the needs of

the community guided by the tenets of Helping…Empowering…Transforming Lives.

Dress Code

The team decided to wear Green which represents Nature especially since Sangre Grande is a nature lover’s haven. There are lots of waterfalls, rivers, forests and beaches in the area.

Team Name

Los Pioneros is the Spanish word for Pioneers. It represents SGRSSO in bringing the services closer to the people. It embodies aptly the theme “Charting the Way Forward”.
