There is validity in all three theories of the atonement. How can we make a synthesis that explains Jesus’ death and resurrection? Although the second one is most certainly

A MESSAGE FROM FR. BARRETT
The Lord is risen!
What does this mean for humanity? To answer that question we must start with another question. Why did Jesus die on the cross? The fundamental nature of God in the Old Testament was righteousness. How could a just God allow such a miscarriage of justice? In other words, why did Jesus die? The church fathers came up with three possibilities. They are the three theories of the atonement.
#1 Jesus death and resurrection was a cosmic battle between good and evil. Christ’s resurrection was God’s final victory over evil and rebellion embodied in Satan.
#2 Jesus death and resurrection are the expiation for sin. This is the Christology of Paul, especially in his letter to the Romans, and it has come to dominate the Western Church and modern Christianity. God is righteous and cannot leave sin unpunished. He demands a blood sacrifice and Jesus made that sacrifice for us. Therefore we have been freed from death by his sacrifice and victory.
#3 The supreme model of love. Jesus “walked the talk.” His commitment to love and mercy is an example for us and a call to love our neighbor as ourselves.
true, it leaves us with celebrating Easter as our ticket to heaven, but says very little about this life. It fast forwards from the Nativity to Easter and omits Jesus’ entire ministry and its connection to his death and resurrection, If we add the other two explanations, which tend to be overlooked in modern Western Christianity, we come up with a more complete picture.
In the prologue to the Gospel according to Jn., we read “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” However, John says “He was in the world, and the world came into being through him,; yet the world did not know him.” In other words the evangelist says that God sent a flood, droughts, and prophets to return the people to him. They did not respond. Finally, God delivered the message in person by taking on human flesh. That message, contained in both the Old and New Testaments, is “love the Lord your God with all your heart, your mind, and your soul and love your neighbor as yourself.” Once again the world rejected the message and the Messenger.
However, this last time God did not let the rejection stand. Jesus’ resurrection is the affirmation that Jesus spoke the truth and that his way is God’s intent for creation. God has intervened in a dramatic supernatural way to begin repairing what humanity broke through sin.
Yes, “the wages of sin are death” as Paul says in Romans. Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, God’s love and grace abounds. We receive not what we deserve, but what we cannot earn on our own.
Perhaps because the West values individualism we tend to stop there, but that is not how the early Church saw it. They immediately began celebrating Easter Sunday as “the eighth day” meaning the first day of the new creation. The apostle Paul wrote that the world groans in birth pains waiting for the fullness of the new creation.
Easter is not just about the next life. Easter is about this life. Jesus’ resurrection is the declaration that creation’s “no,” to the Creator will not stand. Jesus spoke the truth and Jesus announced the future.
The new creation has begun. Alleluia!
