Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,22 May 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their really big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7. This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

This week at the zoo, Xavier notices something is wrong in the wallaby enclosure. A joey has been killed overnight by predatory owls. Chris rescues the remaining joey, saving it from a similar fate. With lots of care, Nova the Masked Owl, has grown dramatically. Masked owls learn how to fly when they are three months old so it's time Chris found out how to train her. Researching on the Internet, he finds a raptor park on Kangaroo Island that demonstrates birds of prey in free flight. Chris discovers another good reason to travel there. There's a wild life park for sale. This might be the opportunity Chris has always wanted to expand his business. Due to its isolation from mainland predators, Kangaroo Island has become a true wild life sanctuary. So for animal-obsessed Chris - it's going to be a jam-packed 48 hours. Chris returns to the zoo. Spring has arrived and with it Chris has a new set of animal babies to look after - squirrel gliders, rainbow lorikeet chicks and his two prized koala babies - Gumnut and Bruce.

The Great Rift: Africa's Wild Heart: WaterSunday,22 May 2011

Faulting and rifting has channelled East Africa's rivers to provide a sanctuary for mighty gatherings of hippos and birds. The same turbulent forces also created the freshwater lakes, thousands of feet deep. Each lake has evolved its own unique species; Lake Malawi alone has more species of fish than any other lake in the world, while above the surface, enormous swirling clouds turn out to contain literally billions of insects, which form the basis for the extraordinary ecosystem. Further north, chemicals leached from the Rift's alkaline volcanoes have created some of Africa's most inhospitable habitats: the caustic soda lakes. Yet even here life continues to flourish as flamingos have adapted to this harsh world and they gather in their tens of thousands. At its northern extremity, the Rift plunges into the sea at Djibouti and enters a world of giant corals and shoals of colourful fish.

Inside The Great Rift - Sunday 22 May, 8.20pm ABC1

At the conclusion of The Great Rift: Africa's Wild Heart - take a look behind the scenes. Cameraman Gavin Newman has spent several years developing a remote underwater camera which he calls 'Nemo'. He is about to send it on its maiden voyage on a descent into the cracks in the floor of the Southern Red Sea where no human eyes have seen before. However, when a group of Whale Sharks are sighted near the surface it calls for a more manual approach.

The KennedysSunday,22 May 2011 New Series

The Kennedys is one of the most controversial and compelling miniseries of the year. The series stars Greg Kinnear as John F. Kennedy (Jack), Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as Joe Kennedy Snr. It also stars Barry Pepper as Bobby Kennedy, Diana Hardcastle as Rose Kennedy.

This epic family story is told through a series of flashbacks, recounting the triumphs and tragedies of JFK's tumultuous journey to the White House.

We see the dominant role that Joe Snr. played in the family and the loyalty of sons Jack and Bobby. He would do anything, and spend whatever was needed to get a Kennedy to the White House. Evidence linking Joe Snr. to mob bosses, collected by the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover, ultimately leads to his devastating stroke in 1961.

The Bay of Pigs, civil rights, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis - trace Jack's maturation from an inexperienced mishandler of events, to a statesman and world leader.

Jack's reliance on amphetamines and his infidelities put strain on his marriage, but the death of their newborn son in August 1963 brings the couple closer than ever before. Jackie agrees to go with JFK on that fateful trip to Dallas, where he is assassinated.

Bobby and Jackie, consumed by grief, then enter into a complex relationship. Bobby tries to take Jack's place, becoming the heir to the Kennedy legacy. He runs for President in 1968 and is on the verge of securing the nomination of the Democratic Party, when he's killed after the California Primary.

The Kennedys will be repeated on ABC2 – Monday, May 23 at 10:30pm

Artscape: Hannah Gadsby: The NGV Story Part 1Tuesday,24 May 2011

In May 2011 the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) turns 150. To celebrate, Hannah Gadsby, comedian and self-confessed art lover, is off on a rollicking historical ride through the collection of one of Australia's most loved art institutions.

From the NGV's humble beginnings at the Victorian Public Library to the recently refurbished facility on St Kilda Road, Hannah Gadsby: The NGV Story reveals the last 150 years hasn't all been beer and skittles. In fact, the Gallery's 'unofficial history' reads more like a great battle: full of cunning strategies and embarrassing blunders. Wealth, conflict, ingenuity and stupidity all take a role in the story of one of the finest art collections in the world.

Gadsby's expose uncovers the cast of rogues and rebels who have made the NGV what it is today. People like Sir Redmond Barry, the Supreme Court judge who set up the gallery in 1861 is better known for sentencing Ned Kelly to hang; and Patrick McCaughey, the flamboyant director in the 1980’s, who is best known for buying, losing and recovering the gallery's most famous painting, Picasso's Weeping Woman.

With her trade mark deadpan wit, Gadsby asks the hard questions: How did a gallery in such a far-flung colony manage to amass such a rich collection? Which trustee didn't have a beard? Was the head of the gallery school really anally retentive? And what is art all about?

Hannah Gadsby: The NGV Story is an informative historical romp with Gadsby shaking the NGV's skeletons out of the closet!

Recipe For MurderThursday,26 May 2011

Sydney, Australia 1953, a city in the grip of a deadly crime wave. In just over a year more than one hundred people were poisoned. The shocking truth is that most of the killers were women.

In 1952 two NSW detectives commenced a murder investigation. What they found was so diabolical that it created a storm of public outrage... women were adding rat poison to cakes and cups of tea and feeding it to their unsuspecting loved ones.

Unlike the popular images of 1950s domestic harmony, Sydney was a melting pot of violence, poverty and tensions between the sexes. In this claustrophobic post-war society, both men and women were trapped in roles that no longer fitted. But there was a way out. With no colour, no taste and no smell, Thallium, the active ingredient in rat poison was the perfect murder weapon. Banned in the rest of the Australia and most of the developed world, incredibly Thallium was freely available in Sydney... at every corner store.

Recipe For Murder tells the true story of three notorious poisoners; blonde ‘good time girl' Yvonne Fletcher, sixty-three-year-old grandmother Caroline Grills, and the attractive 'older woman' Veronica Monty.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors presents an Intellectual Property special, helping to keep Australia's brightest breakthroughs safe and sound. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, designer Alison Page, and guest judge IP lawyer Matt Ward.

Inventions featured on the program:

ETOOL - by inventors Richard Haynes and Alex Bruce from WA

People are becoming increasingly motivated to reduce their carbon footprint. But how can we know how much energy is required for the house we live in? Richard Haynes and Alex Bruce, 32 and 31 years old respectively, are part of the new wave of young inventors tackling the world's environmental challenges.

eTool is the ultimate tool for sustainable building design. It is a software program and database that uses engineering principles to calculate the carbon footprint of a house throughout its entire lifecycle with a high level of accuracy, from materials and construction, through to occupancy and beyond. It will tell you the embodied energy consumption in the materials you choose, as well as the energy efficiency of the house and even calculate the carbon cost of maintenance and repainting during the building's lifetime.

PROBALL TRAINER - by inventor Bill Icim from QLD

Kids get bored so easily, it can be a mighty task to get them away from the computer and outdoors playing sports. Even harder is getting them to invest time in developing sports skills when doing so means spending half the time retrieving balls rather than practising. Bill Icim, a father of four boys, was inspired to invent after getting fed up seeing unhealthy kids playing computer games all day rather than playing outside.

The Proball Trainer is a device that allows you to practise baseball, softball, football, soccer and cricket. The system allows the ball to automatically return to you so you don't waste your time retrieving balls from the neighbours' yard, only to hit them over again.

WATER WATCH - by inventor David Webster from ACT

When water gets into a diesel fuel system, particularly in the newer common rail systems, it can create immediate damage which causes the vehicle to break down. This is becoming more commonplace as people update their diesel motor vehicles to more fuel efficient models. Repair for damage caused by water runs into the thousands of dollars.

Water Watch is an accurate pre-warning detection device which warns of water, even in small quantities, at high flow rates in diesel fuel systems before it enters the fuel injection system. The invention warns the motorist through an audio and visual signal when there is water in their fuel, allowing the problem to be identified and the contaminated fuel to be drained.
