From General Manager’s Desk

Dear GMDC Family,

We are proud to present the 2nd Edition of Environment Magazine for the year 2017-18 for Amod G-19 Ext. Lignite Mine, Rajpardi. This magazine covers the Journey from Black to Green of Amod G-19 Ext. Lignite Mine, Rajpardi on the occasion of World Environment Day 2018.The magazine depicts the multi dimensional work of Rajpardi based on the front of environmental protection measures, conservation of natural resources, sustainable development, Cleanliness awareness & participation, CSR activities being undertaken in one year, energy utilization and conservation. Mining is our core competency but we are also excelling ourselves in all the spheres related with mining operations such as environment, health and safety. We need to be a team with one goal for a neat and clean environment. Eliminating pollution is the best solution to save the environment.

It has to start at home. Educate and practice, that is the only way it can be inculcated into the psyche of people. We all have to contribute to it.

The theme for World Environment Day 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution.” This year’s theme urges everyone to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single use of plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health. It implores us to come together and combat single use plastic pollution. We are now-a -days moving more towards plastic made substances rather than alternative biodegradable substances. The time has come for all of us to again join together and make a reversible bond with Mother Earth.

I heartily congratulate the Rajpardi team to adopt best possible methods for Eco friendly safe mining operations and wish to do the same in upcoming years also.

GREEN BELT DEVELOPMENT:

We are committed for green belt development every year as per the plantation plan being prepared by us. Mass plantation drive is undertaken during the monsoon season in our mine premises. During the year of 2017-18, we have done plantation in 1.08 Ha areas as the lease boundary plantation by mostly native species.

Green belt development is carried out every year in the virgin land as well as backfilled area up to ground level after proper top soil layering and its treatment with organic manure. We are in the process of covering a 50 m wide area all along the lease boundary with plantation. It acts as both a noise as well as dust barrier and hence the neighbouring area is least affected.

Apart from acting as barrier, it also enhances the beauty of the concerned area and it looks very good aesthetically. Plantation in phased manner all along the boundary is our statutory requirement and hence is a mandatory activity. It is mentioned in both Environment Clearance and Mine Closure Plan. This is even the need of the hour and we have to go for both mining and environment hand in hand.

INSTALLATION OF DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM:

Watering to plantation is a major challenge in the mine premises because of large area and the location of plantation being far apart. Watering is essential for survival of the plantation which leads several operational & maintenance cost including manpower. Apart from the economic aspect, there comes the issue of wastage of natural resource i.e water. Looking forward we have developed a system of watering plants through drip irrigation which does not need any manpower , wastage of water has been reduced and the method of irrigation has become quite effective which is paying us back by increased survival rate.

We have covered all the areas of plantation with drip irrigation system and plan for it every year along with the plantation to be carried out. Total

next generation could understand the importance on cleanliness in their lives which would not only help home and surrounding but it shall also help them to be away from several diseases.

Construction of toilets in core and buffer zone villages on public participation basis:

To accelerate the efforts to achieve universal sanitation coverage and to put focus on sanitation, the Prime Minister of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission. Under this mission there is a scheme for the construction of toilets in the rural areas by Government of India with a cost of Rs 12000 per toilet. In order to improve the quality of toilet blocks we have provided a public participation fee of Rs 6000 per toilet in Amod and Rs 3000/ toilet in Amalzar Group Gram Panchayat from the fund being allocated every year for carrying out the mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility. Villagers were in practice of open defecation which promotes several communicable and non communicable diseases. With this step the mode of sanitation would improve and even it would help in reducing illness also.

Segregation of waste at source:

We are in practice of segregating waste at source as paper waste, plastic waste

We follow the rule of three R concept i.e re- use, recycle and reduce .

Utilization of RO Reject Water:

We have installed one RO system in Admin building with 250 l/hr capacity. The reject generated is approximately 4 times that of the treated water produced. In order to utilize the RO reject water an arrangement for sprinkling system has been done in Silica Transportation road and truck haul road near ADM.

Jute bags were distributed to the employees of GMDC, on the occasion of Van Mahotsav so that

they carry bags during the time of purchasing and less plastic waste would be generated from the

colony.

Use of Organic fertilizer for plantation purpose rather than chemical fertilizer available in the

market. The advantages of the step taken is as follows:

It does not change the soil chemistry.

It helps in curbing the problem of Eutrophication which makes the water body devoid of

marine life by cutting the oxygen supply ,thus making it dead.

SUGGESTED MEASURES TO MITIGATE THE THREATS TO WILD LIFE

The impacts can be mitigated through animal conservation and management plan as described subsequently.1.Plantation

Implementation of plantation program is of paramount importance for any industrial development. In addition to augmenting present vegetation, it also checks soil erosion, make the ecosystem more complex and functionally more stable, make the climate more conductive and restore water balance. It can also be employed to bring areas with special problems under vegetation cover and prevent further land deterioration.

The greenbelt helps to capture the fugitive emissions and to attenuate the noise generated apart from improving the aesthetics of the mine lease area. Trees such as Neem, Banyan, Jamun, Ambo, Ambli, Nilgiri, Peepal, Gulmohar etc are planted along the mine boundary, backfilled area and open areas. The various steps that are being and continue to be taken for habitat conservation and restoration of plantation and afforestation within as well as outside the project are essential components. Planting of native species is proposed to help restore the ecology of the area. About 21270 trees have already been planted till 2017 as given in Table

Plantation has been and shall be done along the boundary of complex and in open areas of native species. The tree plantation is present at spacing of 2 m x 2.5 m. The size of the pits are 60 cm x 60 cm X 90 cm filled with manures. The intervening space between the trees are covered with bush varieties. The choice of species are fast growing native species. Some of the species planted are given in Table.

We are using new technology vehicles in mining operations with high capacity and more efficient engines. It helps in the reduction in fuel con sumption, enhance production activity and reduce air pollution.

Use of Euro IV diesel which is having less sulphur content which reduces thesulphur dioxide concentration in the atmosphere due to plying of vehicles.

Payload management is one of the important aspects which helps in completeutilisation of vehicle as per the RTO. It is neither overloaded nor underloaded inorder to go for optimum usage of fuel.

Haul road conditions are maintained as per mine regulation which ultimately provides a smooth gradient that results in optimum RPM which leads to less fuel consumption and less carbon footprint.

We have taken a step of video conferencing for meetings and discussions which has resulted less business tours and it has significant impact on lowering carbon footprint indirectly. The usage of paper is even discouraged and the correspondence is now done through mails and requisitions through ERP system.

Reduction in Land Use Impact:

Mining is disturbing the earth’s land surface for its operation and land is utilized in several stages for for different activities for establishment of mines and mineral extraction. The footprint of mining could be reduced in several ways which we are practicing at our Lignite Project, Rajpardi.

Page 38:  · Web viewIn order to improve the quality of toilet blocks we have provided a public participation fee of Rs 6000 per toilet in Amod and Rs 3000/ toilet in Amalzar Group Gram Panchayat

a) Waste reduction:

“No waste is waste until we consider it waste.” Mining operation generates Silica sand and Ball Clay along with topsoil and overburden as waste material. Silica sand and Ball are two economic minor minerals and top soil is preserved for plantation in backfilled area as per Mine Closure Plan.

b) Mine Reclamation and Closure Activity:

After backfilling the voids upto ground level we are going for biological reclamation and protect it untill it become self sustainable. Mine Reclamation is helping us restoring the original capacity of land characteristics. We are going for development of plantation, development of agricultural land and Gaucher land development which would decrease the impact of mining on land. Even it would help in restoring or even increasing the biodiversity of the area by planting both native and exotic species.

c) Carbon sequestration: Terrestrial sequestration involves the capture and storage of carbon dioxide by plants and the storage of carbon in soil. Terrestrial sequestration can also be thought of as the promotion of carbon sequestration on land assets. Examples of ways to promote terrestrial carbon sequestration include: forest management, reforestation, and

Message by GM (P) – Lignite Project, Rajpardi

The theme for celebration of World Environment Day 2018 is “BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION”. He said, we cannot omit plastic completely from our day to day life so utilization of plastic waste in environmentally sound way such as construction activities and co processing should be more emphasized upon. He appeal to refuse single use plastic at personal level and put

Page 51:  · Web viewIn order to improve the quality of toilet blocks we have provided a public participation fee of Rs 6000 per toilet in Amod and Rs 3000/ toilet in Amalzar Group Gram Panchayat

focus on waste segregation in the mining area so that plastic waste would not be littered here and there in the premises. He narrated a small story which depicts that if balance between nature and human is not maintained then a time would come that the living species would be extinct in the garbage of artificial material.

Seminar:

A seminar was conducted in the second half in GVTC, Rajpardi under MEAI- South Gujarat Local center, Ahmedabad Chapter on the theme of the UNEP “ Beat the Plastic Pollution” in which four mines took part and presented their papers on the said subject.
