Fifty years...WOW, where has the time gone? I have many good memories of Mt Airy High. Since I lived on Lebanon Street, I walked to and from school. It was not unusual for someone to stop and let me hop in for a ride. No matter how many were in the car, there was always room for one more. Walking to Randleman’s after school meant a special treat, ice cream...oh the days of endless ice cream.

A challenge for me in school was having a “male” name. I was forever being assigned a locker right in the middle of the boys’ lockers. Out would come the home room teacher to fuss about me hanging with the boys. Coach Holliman seemed certain that I had gotten myself placed on the roll in his boys PE class (like I could have accomplished that). As it turns out, girls PE wasn’t so great either. Miss Spainhour nearly failed me for not being able to learn to tumble!

Mrs. McKinney’s greeting to me upon entering her chemistry class was “Oh, you’re Skippy’s little sister, he was SO smart”. I went home and begged Mama to get me out of her class, and she did! That might have been a big mistake. Ron Fannon’s teaching methods didn’t suit my chemistry challenged brain, but thanks to tutoring by Jay Vogler (who loved Mrs. McKinney), I did eeek by.

During a girlfriend sleepover our senior year, I recall us all discussing our future hopes and dreams. I announced that I only wanted to marry Jay Vogler and have many babies...and that’s exactly what I did. What a ride! We have been married almost 49 years. I was a stay-at-home mom to 4 wonderful daughters. We now have 8 grandchildren who light up our lives (as well as keep us on our toes). Jay & I live in Franklin, TN near 3 of our daughters and 6 of our grandchildren. We enjoy the Nashville music scene and travel as often as we can.

I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Mt Airy. We had lots of freedom to roam and romp around our neighborhoods with our friends. We could walk downtown (or uptown) without fear and meet at Lamb’s Drug Store to have a Pepsi with peanuts in it. I never once felt unsafe in school. It saddens me that many in today’s world can’t say that.
