HEAVERS FARM PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT AND CARER’S LEARNING NEWSLETTER YEAR 1 AUTUMN 2 Dear Parents and Carers On the other side of this letter is a topic map, which shows all of the areas of the curriculum that your child will be learning this half term. If you have any queries please feel free to ask your class teacher. This half term our topic is ‘Lets Celebrate’, where the children will be learning about different celebrations and how they are celebrated. This will include discussing celebrations that happen in various religions. If you would prefer your child to not take part in these discussions please let your class Teacher know so that other previsions can be made. Homework/Reading diaries Children are set homework each Friday and need to return it by the following Wednesday. Homework is an important activity that reinforces learning from the week. In addition it also teaches children about responsibity for their own learning. Please make every effort to ensure homework is both completed and handed in on time each week. If it is handed in late we may not have time to mark it and your child will receive a 10 minute detention. All children take home a book to read which will be changed once a week, along with their reading diary for home/ school communication. Please ensure you sign their diary weekly. Please also make sure that your child’s reading diary is in school everyday. Children who complete their homework and have their reading diaries signed each week receive extra merits. \ PE kits There are still a number of children who do not have a PE kit with them every week. Children have PE twice a week (see front of diary for details). Please can you provide your child with a full PE kit including; white T-shirt, blue shorts/ tracksuit bottoms and plimsols/trainers (please no laces). Your child’s PE kit should

Ways you can help your child reach their full potential: Please read with your child every night and try to ask them questions

about what they have read. Practise counting forward and back in 1s to and across 100. Practise phonic sounds frequently. Practise handwriting as this is also extremely important in developing

your child’s letter formation. If possible take your child to museums, galleries and exhibitions to help

develop their own interests

Our topic this half term is ’Let’s Celebrate’.

In Art we’ll be finding out about: How to develop and share their ideas, experience and imagination through

stories and learning about different religions and expressing their ideas in the medium of drawings and paintings.

Sculptures by famous sculptors and making our own.

In Literacy we’ll be: Reading and retelling stories with predictable and patterned language. Reading poems linked to senses. Describing characters and settings. Writing our own stories using patterned language. Knowing and spelling the days of the week. Joining words and joining clauses using ‘and’.

In Computing, we’ll be finding out: How to solve computing problems. How to set up a basic computer programme.

In PE we’ll be practising: Gymnastic skills including: travelling and balancing in various ways. Perform dances using simple movements.

In History we’ll be finding out about: The lives of significant historical figures, including comparing those from

different periods. (Bonfire night)

In RE we’ll be finding out about: Various festivals from different religions e.g: Christianity –Christmas (nativity),

Hinduism – Diwali

In Geography, we’ll be finding out: What the four compass directions are and will be using simple vocabulary to

ascertain something’s position.

In Maths we’ll be: Tell the time to the hour and half past the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to

show these times. Measure and begin to record length/height/weight/mass/capacity/volume and time. Recognise and know the value of different denominations of coins and notes. Counting in 1’s forward and backward to 100. Comparing numbers. Solving addition and subtraction problems.
