on the floor. Harriet’s family had 11 people living in one room. The slave owners lived in big houses.

Harriet knew this, but still went. Freedom was very important to her. She made it to the North safely. She did this by using the Underground Railroad.

The Underground Railroad wasn’t underground. It also wasn’t a railroad. It was a group of safe houses. Many people thought slavery was bad. They fought against it by helping slaves escape. The slaves would hide in these houses during the day. They would travel to the next house at night. They knew where to go by following the North Star.

Harriet was finally free! She wanted to help other slaves escape. She started making trips to the South. She would guide slaves to freedom on every trip.

Harriet Tubman was very brave. She was willing to risk her life to help other slaves. She wanted everyone to be free. Harriet stood up for what she believed in and made the world a better place.
