EQAO will give you the following prompt:

TIPS: Write a news report, not an advertisement for what is happening in the photograph. The report should fill the space provided (one page handwritten). Typewritten: Preferred font:

12 point Times New Roman; Paper: letter-sized with 3 cm margins; 3/4 page double-spaced (18 typed lines)

Use 5WH +2Q strategy: who, what, when, where, why, how plus 2 quotations. The first paragraph is called the “lead” and describes what the news report is about by

answering the questions: when, who, what and where. Tell the ending of the story first in the first two paragraphs using 5WH, then provide other details about the story (who, what, where, how and why) in the remaining paragraphs.

The body paragraphs are short (just 1-3 sentences long). The information reported has just happened. Do not explain the history of events that led up to

the event being reported. Do not explain or promote what will happen next. Include imagined statements from people pictured in the provided image. Imagine you had

interviewed them immediately after the photograph was taken about the event described in the headline. Decide on the name of the town where the story takes place. Create names for the people in the story. The details you make up should be reasonable, but do not have to be accurate or true. Your writing skills are being evaluated, not your knowledge of the topic.

The response is written in the third person with a formal, serious tone. Use the past tense. A note about direct and indirect quotations:

Decide who will be in your news report create two direct quotes and one indirect quote before even starting the article. Direct quotations are the exact words someone says and they are surrounded by quotation marks. For example: “The students were great. They organized the coffee house auditions with very little input from the staff,” Principal Stewart explained.Indirect quotations take the information someone said, but do not share them word-for-word. For example: The arts teachers say that several students organized the coffee house auditions completely on their own.

Clearly indent each paragraph. Don’t leave a space between paragraphs. Use lots of transition words and linking expressions. Proof-read your work.
